Visually Impaired Nueva EcijaDirect & indirect cost estimate (by DOH/NCSP) incurred for the care of blind person is P120,000 annually, as long as the person is blind. (cost of care, income loss, other costs)Incorporating a similar cost associated with a caregiver for a blind person, computed cost is doubled to P240,000 annually. (income loss)

Burden of BlindnessECONOMIC IMPACT OF BLINDNESS Region 3 & N. EcijaHowever, if 62% of it (reversible) can be operated on and vision restored (just one eye), this can be averted.REGION 3PROV.: N. ECIJABlind, both eyes (bilateral)80,08810,189One eye blind, other low vision47,6476,062Total: Blind bila+1 eye blind/other LV127,73516,251Reversible blindness (62%)79,19610,076Resource loss averted/Savings (P)P 9,503,520,000P 1,209,120,000Indigent (Quintiles 1 & 2, ~49%)38,8064,937Resource loss averted/Savings (P)P 4,656,720,000P 592,440,000

Reversible blindness focuses on cataract, but there are other causes of blindness & visual impairment which when addressed also contributes further to resource loss averted. The indigent sector is the primary target in the implementation of the prevention of blindness program. The indigent population targets are goals to be worked towards over a period of a number of years, for which specific workable targets per year need to be worked out.
