Ran ‘B’ rowed for Cambridge in the 1934, 1935 and 1936 races, all of which were won by Cambridge. He was in the boat with Jack Wilson, who was to become his rowing partner later in their careers.

At the 1936 Olympics, he rowed as Stroke in Great Britain's eight, the team eventually finishing in fourth place. He returned after the War by winning a gold medal in the coxless pairs event at the 1948 Olympics in London with Wilson, rowing on their familiar Henley course.

In 1954 he qualified as a medical doctor, working for thirty years as a General Practitioner in Blackbird Leys, Oxford. In 2005, it was proposed that the newly refurbished health centre in Blackbird Leys be named after B in recognition of his service to the local community.

Ran’s youngest son AB, shares many similarities with his father. He also studied in Cambridge University, is a doctor in his own right and was on course to become an Olympic-standard rower, before he suffered from a bout of glandular fever and gave up the sport.

3.In the Premier League, X played for Newcastle United,

Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City and Sheffield United, helping the former win the Football League Cup in 2002.

On October 29, 1995 - a day X refers to as Black Friday in his autobiography, ‘How Not To Be A Football Millionaire’ - he lost £47,000 in one afternoon's betting on horse racing. He had just discovered telephone betting and the next day, desperately chasing his losses, he blew another £15,000, and thus a year’s wages down the drain in less than 48 hours.

X was declared legally bankrupt on 1 October 2010 by the Belfast High Court, as he lost over £7m to his gambling addiction.

Perhaps his biggest footballing claim to fame is his presence in the iconic photograph on the next slide.

In one of the great upsets in sports history, distance runner X sprinted from 3rd place and took the gold medal in the 10,000 meter race at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He is still the only American in history to accomplish this feat.

With this victory, he became the second Native American to win an Olympic Gold, after Jim Thorpe.

6.He is a former short track speed skater and four-time Olympian. He was the first from

his country to win a Winter Olympic gold medal and was also part of the short track relay team that won his country’s first Winter Olympic medal, a bronze in 1994. He is the first person from any southern hemisphere country to win a Winter Olympic gold.

He is best known for his memorable gold medal win in the men's short track 1000 metres event at the Salt Lake City Games, owing to three improbable events.

He won his heat convincingly but it appeared that his run would end when the draw for the quarter-finals was made. He finished third in his race and thought himself to be eliminated, but Marc Gagnon was disqualified for obstructing another racer, allowing him to advance to the semi-finals.

In his semi-final race, he was in last place, well off the pace of the medal favourites. However, three of the other competitors in the semifinal crashed, paving the way for the him to take second place and advancing him through to the final.

In the final, he was again well off the pace when all four of his competitors crashed out at the final corner while jostling for the gold medal. This allowed him to avoid the pile-up and take the victory even though he was around 15 m behind with only 50 m to go.

Identify this athlete and give the country he represented.

Slade are an English rock band, which rose to prominence during the glam rock era of the early 1970s with 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones. The British Hit Singles & Albums names them as the most successful British group of the 1970s based on sales of singles.

X is a UK and German only single from Slade. It was written by lead singer Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, and released in 1985. The single's earning went to charity.

The song has no direct relevance or reference to this particular sporting event, but it shares its title with a phrase that defines this great moment in American sport.

In 2001, this club was relegated to Serie B. The situation worsened as it was revealed that the club was in debt to the tune of USD 50 million and unable to pay salaries. It entered judicially controlled administration and, owing to regulations, found themselves refused a place in Serie B. The club effectively ceased to exist until they were able to reform and start again in Serie C2 (Italy's fourth tier).

The new club faced further embarrassment when forced to change the name on its badge and refused the right to wear their iconic strip. All of the highly paid players soon flocked to the exit, with one notable exception, X.

X was a player of high pedigree and his tireless running had earned him the nickname ‘Il Solatino' (the little soldier) and he showed great loyalty in choosing to take a pay cut to Serie C2 levels and remain at the club. Within two years the club, with X as captain, were back in Serie A.

In 2003, the club bought back the rights to use the original name and wear its famous shirt. One shirt that will be forever remembered by fans is the number 7 of X, the little soldier.

“If you could only see his fingers you would know. You would know what is demanded of the best. What sacrifices they routinely make. And you would know, in your heart, that you weren`t like them and never would be. _________, watching X tape those fingers before taking to the field, thinks them ghastly and mal- formed. And they are mediaeval, those awful hands. Shakespearean in their ruin; the gnarled and broken claws of Macbeth`s witches. They will surely torment him in his later years. But for now he wraps them tightly, hiding all the damage done. He shucks on the outsized leather gloves with which he earns his keep. He adjusts his cap with that familiar and strangely comfortable gesture, that slight tug forward over the eyes, and then he squints into the light, steps into place behind his captain and takes the field. And at that moment he looks... at home. As though, without knowing it himself, he has already settled into history.”

An article on Cricinfo about X’s career opens with the above paragraph. Who is X?

"Official" Xs are administered by clubs or national associations. Exact rules for X can vary from country to country. X systems are not used at professional level.

A X is calculated with a specific arithmetic formula. The administration of these systems is the responsibility of the national associations. These bodies specify slightly different ways to calculate X.

In the United States, Xs are calculated using several variables, which includes the player's scores from his most recent games, the slope and a few others.

The Linares 1994 marked the first time the 17-year-old X was invited to compete with the world's strongest players. After four games, X had two points. During X’s match with Kasparov in the fifth round, the World Champion changed his mind after taking his hand off a piece, and moved the piece to a different square, which according to chess rules, would have meant that Kasparov should have been required to play his original move. X did not challenge this because it was X’s first invitation to such an important event.

The tournament director was criticized for not forfeiting Kasparov when the videotape evidence was made available to him. At one point, X reportedly confronted Kasparov in the hotel bar, asking him, "How could you do this to me?” Kasparov told reporters that his conscience was clear, as he was not aware of his hand leaving the piece. X went into a slump over the next six rounds, gaining only half a point.

X recovered from this nightmare tournament and never looked back. X reached a career-high Elo rating of 2735 and world-ranking of #8, and recently retired in 2014, and is now identified as one of the most iconic chess-players of all-time.

In 2006, television cameras captured X ‘mooning’ Everton fans, following City's injury-time equalizer in a game at Goodison Park.

He had received abuse from Everton supporters throughout the match and the gesture has since been described as "light-hearted" and "inoffensive" by people involved in football.

Merseyside Police looked into the incident, but announced in October that no further action would be taken, although X was fined £2,000 for bringing the game into disrepute and warned about his future conduct by The Football Association.

“I felt that I was important because I was representing my country. I was also nervous, due to the fact that I had never seen so many people and TVs. 15.In 2004, he signed a deal with Adidas for a major advertising campaign

that also featured David Beckham, rugby ace Jonny Wilkinson and boxer Laila Ali.

Impressed by his performances, Adidas chose him to feature alongside David Beckham on its ‘Impossible is Nothing' campaign. Not only was his face splashed on huge billboards globally in 2004, Adidas named a shoe-range in his honour. And the best part is that he hadn't heard of Beckham until he was contacted for the ad campaign!

He later said, “I was told that he was a very famous boy who played football. I was taken to a big stadium where they took my photos. Later, they also gave me these shoes.”

The money he raised with this ad campaign was donated by him to various charities. He said, "What will I do with the money? To be able to do what I am doing is a reward in itself. God is watching me, please give this money to those who need it.”

If you find Manuel Neuer’s style of play jaw-dropping, wait till you see this guy.

X was a particularly eccentric player, known for his constant play outside the penalty area, his acrobatic style in goal, and his colorful attire. His strength in goal was his leaping ability and speed, which made him able to overcome his relatively short height for the position he played at.

X also made for an effective striker, a rare example of versatility in football. At times, he would start a game in goal, and transfer upfield later in the match, mostly at the club level.

X has 130 caps for his country and has scored 34 goals in his club career as well.

Trying it is one thing. Pulling it off, is something else. A few people say that it is the most exhilarating thing in the sport. "You have to know you're going to make it," Jacoby Ellsburysays. "I knew. It was something I'll never forget."

The biggest deterrent comes not from the opponent but from the perpetrators themselves. "If it were that easy, teams would be doing it a lot. There's more risk than there is reward, so I don't see teams doing it a lot.“

Another, if less serious, impediment is that teams almost never scout it, meaning players are often forced to decide to do it or not on their own. Several players said their teams don't even mention it during advance meetings before each series, nor is it something they work on in spring training.

Ty Cobb is the all-time leader. What is being talked about?

Eric Liddell, often called the "Flying Scotsman" after the record breaking locomotive, was born 16 January 1902, in Tientsin, in north China, the second son of the Rev. and Mrs. James Dunlop Liddell, who were Scottish missionaries with the London Missionary Society.

At the 1924 Paris Olympics, he refused to run in a heat and was forced to withdraw from the 100-metres race, his best event. The schedule had been published several months earlier, and his decision was made well before the Games.

Liddell spent the intervening months training for the 400 metres, and when the day of the Olympic final came, Liddell raced the whole of the first 200 metres to be well clear of the favoured Americans. With little option but to then treat the race as a complete sprint, he continued to race round the final bend. He was challenged all the way down the home straight but held on to take the win.

He broke the existing Olympic and world records with a time of 47.6 seconds. It was controversially ratified as a world record, despite it being 0.2 seconds slower than the record for the greater distance of 440 yards.

Why did he refuse to run the 100 metres heat? And connect him to the 2012 Olympics.

“Ten twinkling toes of X, Celtic FC's player from India hypnotized the crowd at Parkhead last night in an Alliance game with Galston. He balances the ball on his big toe, lets it run down the scale to his little toe, twirls it, hops on one foot around the defender, then flicks the ball to the center who has only to send it into goal. Three of Celtic's seven goals last night came from his moves. Was asked to take a penalty, he refused. Said he was shy. X does not speak English, his brother translates for him.

“In his bare feet he was a conspicuous figure but this was further emphasisedby his dark skin against the white and green of the Celtic strip. His play was top class. Every ball he touched went exactly to the place he wanted it to. Not one inch was it out. His crosses into goal were simply shrieking to be nodded into the net. I wouldn't like to have calculated the score had McGrory been playing.”

These are excerpts from Scottish newspapers dated 29th August, 1936.

X was the only Indian to play for a first-division European club until Y recently became the second member of this exclusive club.

23.Like Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in Catch Me If You Can, this guy used his ability to

make friends, his daring and his wit to accomplish something unimaginable. He built a 20-year-career as a striker – despite never scoring a goal.

His strategy was as easy as it was effective. In the early 80’s, he made friends with some of Brazil’s most famous players and whenever they signed a new contract, they would convince their club to give their ‘talented’ friend a three month trial contract. Immediately after signing his deal, he would confess that he needed a couple of weeks to get fit.

So for the next month, he would run laps around the pitch at day, and frequent Rio’s party scene at night, relying on his status as professional footballer to impress women.

Once the first month had passed, he would make his appearance on the training pitch. Then he would have someone pass him a ball, and he’d kick it far away. Then he’d grab his hamstrings in agony and spent the next 20 days in the medical department. And this went on and on.

He later moved to Europe and signed for French club Gazelec Ajaccio. Hundreds of fans had arrived at his first training session to witness the wonderful skills of their new Brazilian star. He didn’t want to disappoint them, so pulling his old trick – collapsing into agony after his first touch of the ball – wasn’t an option. Instead, to the delight of the fans, he started kicking balls into the crowd. And continued doing so, until there were no balls left. The coach had no other choice than doing 90 minutes of physical exercise, which he actually excelled at.

He is a Formula One great from the British Isles, winning five GPs in his career as an F1 driver.

His most successful year was 1982, when he finished third in the drivers' championship, winning two Grand Prix. In several races he achieved high placings despite qualifying towards the back of the grid. At the first ever Detroit Grand Prix in 1982, he overtook three cars in one lap deep into the race on a tight, twisty track that was difficult to pass on; working his way from 17th starting position on the grid, he charged through the field and scored a victory in the process.

A year later in 1983, he repeated the feat at the final ever Formula One race in Long Beach; another street circuit, starting from 22nd on the grid, the farthest back from which a modern Grand Prix driver had ever come to win a race.

27.• X is a freestyle skiing competition

consisting of one timed run of free skiing on a steep, bumpy course, stressing technical turns, aerial maneuvers and speed.

• Xs are a series of bumps on a piste formed when skiers push snow into mounds as they do sharp turns. This tends to happen naturally as skiers use the slope but they can also be constructed artificially. Once formed, a naturally occurring X tends to grow as skiers follow similar paths around it, further deepening the surrounding grooves known as troughs. Since skiing tends to be a series of linked turns, Xs form together to create a bump field.

• The term X is from the Bavarian language word for ‘mound’ or ‘small hill’.

31.Maurice Watkins, legal director of the club said, "It was an obscure thing

to say. He just does not want to stay here and meet you and answer questions because he has had enough...I think he has been under tremendous strain."

The words became the subject of debate. The assumption was that they were another example of X's flair, but Fabrice Ousselot, London correspondent of Liberation, suggested he was not being totally original.

"This is something I've heard before. I think it's clearly relating to the media and all the people on his back all the time, but you never know with X. Maybe he got mixed up.“

Before X had said those words, the magistrate had sentenced X to two weeks in prison. There then followed an almost comic three-and-a-half hours during which a bail application to the same bench was turned down, forcing Watkins and his legal team to dash up the road to the nearby crown court to make a further attempt to get X released.

Who is X? What had he said?

Only one man in the history of the NBA has averaged a triple-double for one season.

He did it as a second-year player for the Cincinnati Royals in 1962. That year, he averaged 30.8 points, 11.4 assists and 12.5 rebounds.

The hilarious part is that he was only tops in assists that year and to add insult to injury, he was not named MVP.

He can be said to be the NBA’s Jean-Marc Bosman, as the landmark NBA antitrust suit filed under his leadership, led to an extensive reform of the league's strict free agency and draft rules and, subsequently, to higher salaries for all players.

Name him.
