PHYSICAL EDUCATION – ACTIVITY IDEAS
Here are a variety of activities that you can do at home to help you keep active as well as maintain your fitness.
Goals: The recommended amount of exercise per week for primary aged students- 3 hours
Building fundamental motor skills, fitness & endurance.
Push ups
Knee push ups are a good alternative if you it’s too difficult to do the standard push ups. Record your personal best (PB) Do your push ups on a soft surface such as carpet Challenge: Can you do more than Mr.T in a
row 35 …….Mr Willis= 10
Tennis ball work (Catch & throw)
If you haven’t got a sibling to play catch with, use a wall, varying the distances. Challenge: 1 handers 10 on each hand by throwing the tennis ball straight up in the air or up against the wall.
Step ups Great for the quads (leg muscles) If there’s no steps in the house, use a sturdy stool. Don’t rush it and take your time. You can either do 10 in a row and stop or for 20 seconds (depends on your fitness) Challenge: Use one leg in a hopping style then swap legs.
skipping
There are a variety of skipping activities you can do. Challenge: see how many skips you can do in a row or for how long you can skip for
Planking
See how long you can hold a Plank for. This will focus on core strength and muscular endurance. Challenge: Get a stop watch and see what your longest plank is & your sibling(s)
Walk the dog
Take the dog for a walk, if you haven’t got a dog borrow your neighbour’s one. A great activity to get you out and about. If your dog is able to let run free at the park take a ball like I do. Challenge: Give your dog a race.
Squats Great for the legs, you can do them up against a wall or in the middle of the living room. Place your hands out in front of you for balance. Challenge: What’s the most you can do before your legs become jelly
Dips
Targeting the triceps, these can be done with a chair or step. See how many you can do in a row. See if you can beat your brother or sister. Challenge: Can you do more than 10 dips?
Sit ups or stomach curls Place hands across your chest & get a family member to hold your legs. Try to sit all the way up, see how many you can do, then rest and do some more. If you would like to get creative place a chocolate bar just out of reach and pretend that’s your goal.
Trampoline If you have a trampoline get off those devices and go jump for several minutes. The g-force that bouncing produces targets the whole body. Challenge: See how long you can stand on one foot.
Burpees Burpees are a great high impact form of exercise that targets all muscle groups. Do not get it confused with burping (that’s just bad manners). Do three in a row then rest and repeat. Challenge: For elite students try to do a tuck jump instead of a vertical jump.
Bicycle ride If you have a bicycle go for a bike ride with an adult or even to the park where you may be able to ride. Make sure to use a helmet, be aware of cars, low branches and any other hazards that may present themselves. Wear bright clothes and stay away from busy roads. Challenge: Can you ride for 10 minutes straight or more (no monos)
SCIENCE – Prep Activities
Humans have five basic senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. The body parts
associated with each sense – mouth, nose, ears, eyes and skin send information to the
brain to help us understand and perceive the world around us.
Term Goal:
* An understanding that our senses help us to understand the world around us.
* An understanding that information we “sense” comes to our brain to be sorted out –
“that animal I am looking at is a cow”, “that smells like a pizza”, “that feels hot to touch”,
“I like the sweet taste of that”, “that style of music I am listening to helps me relax”.
Therefore as we have more sensory experiences our brains keep developing and growing
with that new information.
Activities: Please choose any of the activities from the grid below. These are meant to be
fun sensory activities and do not have to be recorded or submitted – enjoy!
1. Cut out pictures from magazines and catalogues to show the 5 senses being used – taste - for example people eating food.
2. For each of the 5 senses - draw a picture to illustrate how animals may use their senses.
3. Close your eyes and carefully try moving around the room with someone else telling you when to stop, go, turn etc.
4. Make up a group of items to put in a feely box – use a blindfold and test if you can tell what objects you are touching.
5. Play a game of “I Spy With My Little Eye Something Beginning With …..” with your family
6. Use the internet to listen to different types of musical instruments – flute, trumpet, drums etc. Which ones do you like the best?
7. Find some “Spot the Difference” puzzles on-line – can you find the differences?
8. Set up a taste test table and a checklist – find a small sample of a variety of foods/things (that are safe to eat). Tick or cross if you did like the taste or not.
9. Try to draw a simple picture wearing a blindfold. Take it off – how close to what you wanted to draw did you get? Try again with another picture!
SCIENCE – Grade 1 & 2 Activities:
Plants and Animals are the major way that living things refers to things that are now or once were alive
and they are divided into groups – plants and animals. A non-living thing is anything that was never alive.
In order for something to be classified as living, it must grow and develop, use energy, reproduce, be made
of cells, respond to its environment, and adapt.
Animals live in a variety of habitats that must provide for their needs – food, water, shelter and room to
move. Habitats vary and animals have physical and behavioural adaptations that help them survive,
especially in extreme habitats like deserts or polar-regions.
Term Goal:
An understanding that everything in the world can be divided into living things or non-livings things.
• Living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves
• Non-living things do not move, do not change or grow, cannot reproduce themselves nor do they
need to eat, drink or breathe.
• Living things have a variety of external features (horns, scales, fur etc.) and live in different places
called habitats (deserts, swamps, mountains etc.) where their basic needs, including food, water
and shelter, are met.
Activities: Please try any of the following activities from the grid below. These are meant to be fun
activities and do not need to be recorded or submitted – please enjoy!
1. Living and non-living things – make a chart with 2 columns to show – it could be pictures, labels or photographs
a.) non-living objects like – rock, book, box, pencil etc. b.) living things like – birds, fish, plants etc.
2. Insects do not have bones inside their bodies. Instead they have a hard outer- shell and 6 legs, antennae and most adults have wings. Write out the names and draw pictures of some insects. You might find around your house/neigbourhood.
3. Make an animal alphabet – draw an animal for each of the first letters (hint – Q – quokka)
4. Baby animals – what are they called – research and find out which babies are called calves, cubs, kittens/kits, puppies etc.
5. How many animals do you know? Cut out pictures from magazines and catalogues to make a book about animals.
6. Use the internet to The Magic School Bus episodes about animals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf6aKrv-co8
7. Make up your own board game that is similar to “Snakes and Ladders” but use two different animals to move up or down the game board – example – move up the giraffe’s neck and down the crocodile’s body.
8. Spiders – are not insects. They belong to a group called arachnids. They are eight legs but no antennae. Most spiders make a web to catch their food. Use the internet or books to find out about some interesting spiders.
9. Draw some pictures of animals in their natural habitat: Desert, Arctic, Antarctic, Grasslands, Forest, Swamp/Wetlands, Tropical Rainforest.
SCIENCE – Grade 3 & 4 Activities:
An organism is defined as any living system which is to be alive and performs various functions like
growth, movement, reproduction, respiration, nutrition and excretion. They can then be organised into
groups based on the characteristics they have in common – firstly - vertebrate or invertebrate. Organisms
can then be grouped into other categories such as vertebrates into mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and
amphibians.
Animals live in a variety of habitats that must provide for their needs – food, water, shelter and room to
move. Habitats vary and animals have physical and behavioural adaptations that help them survive,
especially in extreme habitats like deserts or polar-regions.
Term Goal:
• An understanding that living things can be grouped on the basis of observable features and can be
distinguished from non-living things
• An understanding that different living things have different life cycles and depend on each other
and the environment to survive
Activities: Please choose any activities from the list below. These are meant to be fun activities and do not
have to be recorded or submitted. Enjoy!
1. Cut out pictures from magazines and catalogues to show 3 examples of each of the 5 vertebrate groups – mammal, reptile, fish, bird and amphibian
2. For each of the 5 vertebrate groups (mammal, reptile, fish, bird and amphibian) – select animal to draw and illustrate the animal and its environment.
3. Make your own 3D paper models of some of your favourite animals. Try http://krokotak.com/ If you need some inspiration
4. Look at a food web of any habitat. Try to work out what would happen if just one animal or plant was removed. How would it change the lives of the remaining plants and animals.
5. Try to find information about some animals that have interesting life cycles – you should be looking mostly at animals from the amphibians and insect groups.
6. Draw and colour a picture of an animal – then turn it into a jigsaw puzzle for others to complete.
7. Make a list of animals that fit into 3 columns according to the animals’ diet – Carnivores (meat eater), Herbivores (plant eater) and Omnivores (both meat and plants).
8. Compare (similarities and differences) the following animals: * Giraffe/Possum * Lion/Rabbit * Dolphin/Elephant * Octopus/Fox * Lizard/Polar Bear
9. Use the internet to find and list 5 animals that live in the following habitats: Desert, Arctic, Antarctic, Grasslands, Forest, Swamp/Wetlands, Tropical Rainforest.
SCIENCE – Grade 5 & 6 Activities:
All living things can then be organised into groups based on the characteristics they have in common – firstly – plant
or animal, then vertebrate or invertebrate.
Organisms can then be grouped into other categories such as vertebrates into mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and
amphibians.
Invertebrates are grouped according common characteristics such as Arthropods (jointed legs) – Insects (6 legs, 3
body parts), Arachnids (8 legs, 2 body parts), Crustaceans (many legs, hard shell) and Myriapods (more than 10 legs,
long, thin body).
Other invertebrate groups are: Planarians (Flatworms), Coelenterates (Two layered animals - jellyfish), Annelids
(segmented worms), Molluscs (Shelled animals - snails) and Echinoderms (slimy skins - starfish)
Animals live in a variety of habitats that must provide for their needs – food, water, shelter and room to move.
Habitats vary and animals have physical and behavioural adaptations that help them survive, especially in extreme
habitats like deserts or polar-regions.
Term Goal:
• Understanding that living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their
environment
• An understanding that the growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their
environment
• An understanding that the actions of humans has an effect on the natural world
Activities: Please choose any of the activities below. The activities are meant to be fun and do not need to be
recorded or submitted for assessment. Please enjoy!
3. Cut out pictures from magazines and catalogues to show 3 examples of each of the 5 vertebrate groups – mammal, reptile, fish, bird and amphibian
4. Research Project: Find out about one animal from each the following habitats: Desert, Arctic, Antarctic, Grasslands, Forest, Swamp/Wetlands and Tropical Rainforest. What physical or behavioural characteristics does it have that helps it to survive?
3. Make a poster showing the characteristic features of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
4. Make a list of the common traits of animals that fit into 3 columns according to the animals’ diet, eye position and type of feet for – Carnivores (meat eater), Herbivores (plant eater) and Omnivores (both meat and plants).
5. Make a world map sketch featuring the seven continents – then draw 3 animals that represent area. For example – Antarctic – Emperor Penguin, Southern Elephant Seal and Antarctic Skua.
6. Use the internet to find and list 5 animals that live in the following habitats: Desert, Arctic, Antarctic, Grasslands, Forest, Swamp/Wetlands, Tropical Rainforest.
7. Make your own 3D paper models of some of your favourite animals. Try http://krokotak.com/ If you need some inspiration
8. Find some “Spot the Difference” puzzles of animals on-line – can you find the differences?
9. Research and find out about examples of human actions leading to adverse effects on animals – for example, oil spills, habitat destruction, waste going into waterways, coral bleaching etc.
