MuSiCWORKS – gRADE 5

RiChARD L. SAuCEDO

Shooting Stars 2Richard L. SaucedoBegin or end your next concert with this dynamic and challenging new work from Richard Saucedo! Filled with rich musical imagery, the opening section features prominent roles for alto and soprano sax soloists while the percussion section provides a pulsating ostinato accompaniment. After a beautiful lyric section, the fast pace returns with antiphonal tradeoffs, and culminates

in a bombastic statement from the entire ensemble. Dur: 6:0004003061 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $95.0004003062 Score Only .....................................................................................................$10.00

Finale from Symphony no. 1 3(Revised Edition)Kalinnikov/trans. Glenn Cliffe Bainum/ed. Christopher Heidenreich The skillful transcriptions of the late Glenn Cliffe Bainum have proven to be a standard by which others are measured. This transcription is one of Mr. Bainum’s most monumental works. Basile Kalinnikov, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky, died prematurely at 35 just as he was establishing himself as one of the great Russian composers. Originally published in 1958, this new edition features a revised full score and parts for optional antiphonal brass choirs. Dur: ca. 9:0004002975 Score and Parts ..........................................................................................$125.0004002976 Score Only .................................................................................................... $25.00

SAMuEL R. hAZO

Parkour 4Samuel R. HazoCombining brash and aggressive rhythmic figures along with more gentle moments and inventive textures, this impressive work by Samuel Hazo is truly a standout for advanced bands. The piece is built around a four-note motif, which is developed and expanded throughout. A middle section features more of a jazzy flavor with saxes in the spotlight accompanied by finger snaps. The

rhythmic intensity returns, building towards a glorious full ensemble affirma-tion and bringing this exciting work to a powerful conclusion. Dur: 5:4504003063 Score and Parts ..........................................................................................$125.0004003064 Score Only ..................................................................................................... $15.00(Available Fall 2011)

MuSiCWORKS – gRADE 4Continuum 5Robert BuckleyThis exciting, innovative new work from Robert Buckley was commissioned by the Troy University Symphony Band in honor of the 37th annual Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic in Alabama. Using a recurring two-measure loop, this uniquely constructed piece is built up around various musical building blocks that are constantly evolving and transforming. The music is dramatic and dynamic, with full-blown ensemble passages

suddenly dropping to quiet, powerful moments without ever losing the music’s continuous drive. Following an exotic, bluesy middle section the piece builds, accelerating to a thrilling, rhythmic, percussive finish. A real tour de force! Dur: 7:0004003030 Score and Parts .......................................................................................... $75.0004003031 Score Only ......................................................................................................$10.00

JAy BOCOOK

O Waly, Waly (A Rhapsody for Band) 6Jay BocookDating from the 1600s, the folk song “O Waly, Waly” (commonly known as “The Water is Wide”) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also “Carolina” (South Carolina’s official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic-flavored

Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble. A creative and dynamic work for contest or festival! Dur: 5:0004003069 Score and Parts .......................................................................................... $75.0004003070 Score Only .....................................................................................................$10.00

Siorai September 7Samuel R. HazoTranslated from Gaelic as “Eternal September,” this marvelous setting for band is designed to take each listener back to their own vivid fall memories on a college campus. Commissioned by the University of Notre Dame and pre-miered at their Carnegie Hall performance in 2010, this work is also dedicated to the composer’s father, Dr. Samuel J. Hazo, a 1949 graduate of Notre Dame. Dr. Hazo’s poem “Home Are the Sailors” is incorporated in the middle of the piece. Rich in musical references and varied textures, this is a dramatic and rewarding work for mature ensembles. Dur: ca. 5:3004003043 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $85.0004003044 Score Only ....................................................................................................... $7.50

A guide Along the Pathway 8Richard L. SaucedoThis intense and emotional work was commissioned by the Indiana Music Educators Association, and was premiered at the 2011 IMEA Convention with the composer conducting. Written as a gift to longtime friend of music education, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, the piece is basically lyrical in nature with beautiful lines and colors. A brief faster section, in the words of the composer, “describes that uncomfortable time when we are desperately trying to find ourselves.” The piece ends on a solemn yet reaffirming note, reminding us of the importance of guides and mentors along life’s pathway. Dur: 5:0004003059 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $75.0004003060 Score Only .....................................................................................................$10.00

MuSiCWORKS – gRADE 3Blue and green Music 9Samuel R. HazoThe stunning artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe is no more apparent than in her famous 1921 painting en-titled Blue and Green Music. Fittingly commissioned by the Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (O’Keeffe’s birthplace), Samuel Hazo does an amazing job of portraying subtle as well as bold colors in musical terms. Based on a single theme that is manipulated and varied throughout, the piece progresses from delicate mallet percus-

sion effects up to climactic impact points for the entire ensemble. O’Keeffe explained her idea that “music could be translated into something for the eye.” And Mr. Hazo succeeds wonderfully in translating it back into something for the ear! Dur: 4:4504003045 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $75.0004003046 Score Only ....................................................................................................... $7.50

To Soar with Eagles 10Michael SweeneyIn this dynamic multi-style overture for band, Michael Sweeney opens with stark percussive hits, brass fanfares, and swirling woodwind effects. A fast tempo and long build follows, using non-traditional harmonies and overlap-ping layers of sound, climaxing with a majestic, soaring statement by the entire ensemble. The slower middle section features a solo flute accompanied by rich sonorities and counterlines. The fast tempo returns initiated by the percussion section and then recurring earlier themes as the piece drives to a satisfying finish. With variety and pacing, this is a perfect choice for contest or festival. Dur: 5:20 04003037 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $65.0004003038 Score Only ....................................................................................................... $7.50

Lullaby from a Distant Star 11Richard L. SaucedoThe lush harmonies in this lyrical and emotional piece will provide your students with a wonderful learning tool to improve listening skills, while at the same time providing a spellbinding effect for the listener. Featuring a blend of soft textures, full ensemble peaks, a brief solo flute cadenza, and a sensitive orchestration throughout, the music effectively alludes to far off places. Dur: 3:50 04003073 Score and Parts ...........................................................................................$60.0004003074 Score Only........................................................................................................$5.00

ROBERT BuCKLEy

Windjammer 12(Voyage Aboard a Tall Ship)Robert BuckleyWindjammers were the last of the great sailing tall ships, and this piece from the pen of Robert Buckley captures the majesty and excitement of these amazing vessels. The voyage begins announced by three solo trumpets surrounding the audience and bouncing musical phrases off one another. The sails are raised,

the ship is underway, and the audience is taken on a colorful and exciting musical voyage. This is effective and skillfully scored programmatic music at its best. Dur: 5:40 04003032 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $65.0004003033 Score Only........................................................................................................ $7.50

...To Realms of Endless Day 13Johnnie VinsonHere’s a beautifully scored lyric piece featuring a flowing melody passed from section to section. There is also a nice variety of lighter, delicate textures contrasted with dramatic full ensemble passages. The Singing River 14Johnnie VinsonIn the Shoals region of northwest Alabama, the Tennessee River is often referred to as “the singing river,” a term originating with the Yuchi tribe of Native Americans. Commissioned by the Shoals Area Band Directors Associa-tion, Johnnie Vinson has created an effective work for band that focuses on the river’s relationship to life in this area both past and present. A primary “river theme” is stated from which a series of variants creates a fascinating and appealing musical tapestry. Song for hope 15Michael SweeneyWritten as a memorial for a middle school band student, this sensitive and moving work opens with a chorale played by off-stage brass. A flowing melody stated in the low register is then developed before leading to a brief fanfare-like affirmation. The Korean folk song “You and I” is briefly quoted before returning to the off-stage brass and calm closing passage. A

beautifully scored lyric piece for band. (Extra players are not required for the off-stage parts.) Sneak Attack! 17Richard L. SaucedoYou can sense right from the start that someone is sneaking around to give that unexpected surprise to a friend or foe! The percussion provide a simple but effective groove, and a jazzy middle section helps to mix things up and offers nice variety. Written in a single tempo throughout, here is an entertaining piece that will be a blast to perform, and yet musically rewarding to teach. Dur: 2:4504003079 Score and Parts ....................................$50.0004003080 Score Only ................................................$5.00

Dance of the Spirits 18Michael SweeneyThe Native American Cree tribe refer to the aurora borealis (or “northern lights”) as the “dance of the spirits.” Using a variety of unusual sounds and ef-fects, quickly changing textures and surprises, Michael Sweeney has created a musical impression of this phenomenon’s stunning beauty and unpredictable nature. An exciting and unique addition to the young band repertoire, this will be enjoyable to rehearse and perform. (Grade 21/2) Dur: ca. 5:3004003051 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $55.0004003052 Score Only ........................................................................................................$5.00

Terminal Velocity 19Michael OareA term used in physics, “terminal velocity” describes the point at which a falling object ceases to accelerate but continues to fall at a constant velocity. Inspired by the exhilaration of sky diving, this is an exciting and dynamic work for young bands, and fittingly composed all in one constant tempo. Dur: 2:2004003039 Score and Parts .............................................$50.00

04003040 Score Only .......................................................................................................$5.00

Mountain Country Dances 20Johnnie VinsonInspired by the musical tradition of early American folk songs, Johnnie Vinson has composed this appealing suite of three contrasting dance styles. The movements include “Tar Heel Two-Step,” “Woodland Waltz,” and “Blue Ridge Reel.” Sure to be an entertaining and rewarding work for young bands. (Grade 21/2) Dur: 5:1504003049 Score and Parts .......................................................................................... $55.0004003050 Score Only ....................................................................................................... $7.50

O Mio Babbino Caro 21Giacomo Puccini/arr. Johnnie VinsonFrom the Puccini opera Gianni Schicchi, this is one of the most beautiful and recognizable melodies in all of classical music. ROBERT LOngFiELD

Fanfare for a Celebration 22Robert LongfieldPerfect as a concert opener, this energetic piece uses a pulsating rhythmic pattern to build intensity, along with strong melodic fragments passed around the entire band. The Lost Lady Found (from Lincolnshire Posy) 23Percy Grainger/arr. Michael SweeneyThe final movement of Percy Grainger’s masterwork Lincolnshire Posy is arranged here for younger bands with reduced instrumentation. Similar to his earlier adaptation of “Horkstow Grange,” Michael Sweeney carefully main-tains the structural and harmonic integrity of the original while providing an authentic-sounding version at an easy level. Certain to become a “must have” for the young band repertoire. (Grade 21/2) Dur: 2:5004003067 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $55.0004003068 Score Only .......................................................................................................$5.00

Allegretto (from Symphony no. 7 ) 24Ludwig van Beethoven/arr. Robert LongfieldFrom Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, this movement is one of the master’s most recognizable and performed themes. Recently featured in the Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech, here is a skilled and effective adaptation for young bands by Robert Longfield. A great way to showcase the classical period of musical history on any program. The Brandenburg gate 25(german March)Johnnie VinsonHeralded by a fanfare-like figure for trumpets in the first strain, here is an appealing German-style march solidly scored for young players. Low brass take the lead on the second strain, followed by a contrasting lyrical section featuring the woodwinds. The full ensemble brings us to a rousing finish in this terrific-sounding

march. (This is a nice follow-up to Johnnie’s earlier “international” marches, St. Petersburg March, New Forest March and The Crown of Castile.) Dur: 2:30 04003087 Score and Parts ...........................................................................................$50.0004003088 Score Only .......................................................................................................$5.00

Our Kingsland Spring 26 (Movement i of georgian Suite)Samuel R. HazoCommissioned by the Georgia Music Educators Association District 8 Honor Band, this lyrical work uses flowing melodic lines and creative scoring to create an effective setting for young bands. Sam skillfully alternates sections of light and delicate writing with full broad-sounding chorale passages in a work that definitely sounds more impressive and complex than its easy level would indicate. Dur: 3:2504002379 Score and Parts ...........................................................................................$50.0004002380 Score Only .......................................................................................................$5.00

Fanfare for a Celebration 22Robert LongfieldPerfect as a concert opener, this energetic piece uses a pulsating rhythmic pattern to build intensity, along with strong melodic fragments passed around the entire band. A brief contrasting middle theme in minor sets up the dramatically faster and exciting final strain. Dur: 2:35

Petersburg March, New Forest March and The Crown of Castile.) Sassafras Tea (Cajun Two-Step) 27Michael OareComposed in the style of a Cajun two-step, the simple melody is stated first by the trumpets with a zydeco-inspired accompaniment. An optional advanced trombone part is included with New Orleans style tailgate effects. A washboard and optional keyboard bass part will add to the festive, homegrown sound of a traditional Cajun band in this unique piece that is easy and fun to play! Dur: 2:15

Journey to the Lion’s Castle 2Rossano Galante Written in a grand film scoring style, Rossano Galante’s Journey to the Lion’s Castle takes the listener on an excit-ing musical excursion of various moods and styles. The impressive opening strains feature woodwind flourishes and powerful brass lines. A graceful and majestic middle section offers a change of pace before the end-ing segment drives to a breathtaking finish. For mature

bands, this could become a programming highlight! Cry of the Last unicorn 3Rossano GalanteIntensely descriptive from the very first note, Cry of the Last Unicorn portrays a fateful encounter of hunters tracking the “last unicorn.” The music is at times poignant and other times dramatic and as exciting as the chase it depicts. Sweeping themes and rich scoring help to make this a memorable work for the symphonic stage. Dur: 7:00 (Grade 4)50490420 Score and Parts ........................................................................................... $85.0050490421 Score Only .......................................................................................................$10.00

Fire of Eternal glory 4 (novorossiyek Chimes)Dmitri Shostakovich/arr. James CurnowAlthough considered to be a small work in Shostakovich’s catalog, Fire of Eternal Glory was one of his best known works in the USSR. A recording of the piece, originally written for the war memorial in Novorossiyek, has been playing continuously at that location since its construction in 1960, possibly making it one of the most frequently played pieces

of classical music in existence. James Curnow’s arrangement for young band begins with delicate sounds from the bells, and builds to a tremendous climax for full band. March, Op. 99 5(Critical Edition with Full Score)Sergei Prokofiev/arr. Paul Yoder, ed. William BerzOriginally composed for band by Prokofiev, this is the well-known version adapted and arranged by Paul Yoder. Symphonic Suite 7 from On the WaterfrontLeonard Bernstein/arr. Jay BocookThe acclaimed 1954 film On the Waterfront starred Marlon Brando and garnered multiple Academy Awards, as well as a nomination for Bernstein’s poignant and evocative music (his only film score). Using music from the film, Bernstein created this 20-minute suite which consists of six continuously flowing movements.

Juxtaposing moments of tenderness with elements of cold savagery as depicted in the film, this is a monumental and distinctive addition to the symphonic repertoire. Elegy for Albinoni 15Master LevelShelley HansonTomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) was a prolific Baroque-era composer whose works are now rarely performed. However, he was much admired by J.S. Bach who used examples of Albinoni’s music in his teaching, as well as using some of Albinoni’s themes as the basis for some of his own pieces. “Elegy for Albinoni” is a beautiful memorial piece in honor of this musical master, and

uses a romantic tone to set the stage for a theme based on one of Albinoni’s violin sonatas. A rewarding work! The piece asks the performers to “play” paper like a percussion instrument – ripping, tearing, tapping and crumpling along with the electronic track even before they pick up their instruments to play along. A very creative and evocative work sure to stir the imagination of players and audience alike.

His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas’ mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.
