Program Notes:

Music is alive and vivid, and playing music is a joyful and fulfilling activity. Overture

Spiritoso captures the essence of these feelings via heroic fanfares, pulsing rhythms and

wistful melodies. It is music for the head and the heart and for the enjoyment of player

and audience alike.

Rehearsal Notes:

It is essential that the players strive for precision – rhythmically and articulatively.

Contrasts in lyrical and pulsating themes should be made effectively and tonal contrasts

addressed similarly.

Control of tone in the opening fanfare and the final choral like episode from [138] is

critical – never allow the ensemble to play louder than they can control.

Strive make the melodic material in the slower section beautiful – song-like indeed. The

tonal material there is delicate and requires studious attention to control and projection.

Make the tone warm throughout that section.

About the Composer:

Ralph Hultgren’s professional music career has spanned a number of decades and

includes work as a trumpet player, composer, conductor and teacher. He is currently

Head of Open Conservatorium at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

Dr Hultgren is a founding member of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’

Association (ABODA), and a member of the World Association for Symphonic Bands

and Ensembles. He is the recipient of the Citation of Excellence, ABODA’s highest

honour, and the 2005 Midwest Clinic International Award presented by the Board of

Directors of the Midwest Clinic in recognition of his international contributions to music

education. In 2009, Dr Hultgren was honoured by being made ‘Patron of the

Maryborough Music Conference’, Australia’s largest music education event, an honour

that is the most prestigious accolade given by Education Queensland for significant

contributions to music education in the state.
