Touted by Classical Guitar Magazine as a ‘spectacular’ musi-

cian and his interpretations as ‘truly breathtaking’, Mateusz

Kowalski is emerging as a star on the worldwide guitar stage.

His repertoire consists of pieces from different epochs –

from renaissance to modern compositions. He interprets

them in a historically informed manner. His aim is to build

the interesting, convincing and very often surprising musical

creations, being in the same while the great stories, which

impact the listeners.

As a concert artist, he performed in the most famous ven-

ues worldwide. In age of 23, he made his debut in Vienna

Musikverein and in Shanghai Grand Theatre, where great

stars as Yo-Yo Ma and Luciano Pavarotti gave concerts. In

2019 he performed Concierto de Aranjuez with Warsaw

Philharmonic Orchestra. He gave recitals in Paris, Budapest,

London and could be heard in 15 countries all over the world.

The competitions he had won had a huge, positive impact on

his career. Next to the 1st prize and audience prize in Antony,

France, the most important one is the 2nd EuroStrings

International Competition – the highlight of the EuroStrings

program, which Mateusz was a member of. EuroStrings is

the first European platform gathering 17 classical guitar fes-

tivals that organize international guitar competitions. To

become a member of the program one has to win at least

one of them. In Mateusz’s case, it was a competition in Rust,

Austria. The program creates a lot of international oppor-

tunities supporting professional career development. 2nd

EuroStrings International Competition, which in 2019 took

place in London, is the first European competition open only

to the winners of the EuroStrings international competitions.

The winners were representatives of 12 countries. Part of the

1st prize was an international tour in Europe, the US and Asia.

In September 2019 artist’s debut CD album Mateusz Kowalski

Classical Guitarist was premiered. It was released by the

Polish label CD Accord and distributed by NAXOS. The CD is

a set of important pieces for the artist. The program consists

of compositions written by Bach, Giuliani, Tárrega, Barrios,

Piazzolla, Ponce, Schubert and Assad (premiere recording).

Mateusz was born in Koszalin in 1995. He started learn-

ing to play the guitar at the age of 7 and for the next 12

years, he learnt under the supervision of Dariusz Schmidt

in the Grażyna Bacewicz State Music School Complex in

Koszalin (diploma with honours). Then he graduated from

the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw after

studies with Ryszard Bałauszko (diploma with honours). He

has also mastered his skills during numerous courses and

masterclasses conducted by such outstanding musicians

as Sérgio Assad, Oscar Ghiglia Zoran Dukić, Alvaro Pierri,

Łukasz Kuropaczewski and Paul O’Dette.

Apart from touring, Mateusz is very active as a pedagogue,

too. He gave masterclasses during festivals in Szeged

(Hungary), Rust (Austria) and Qingdao (China). Since October

2019, he has been teaching at The Frederic Chopin University

of Music in Warsaw.

 

Mateusz Kowalski is a scholarship holder of the Marshal

of the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship, the Mayor of

Koszalin and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage

(the “Young Poland” programme).

The artist proudly plays on instruments built by famous luth-

iers: Masaki Sakurai, Karl-Heinz Roemmich and Hanson Yao.

He uses the Savarez strings.

His ability to play his instrument is flawless and his

communication with the public is truly extraordinary.
