Saint Martins Institute, Aalst - Belgium Sint-Maarteninstituut Aalst - Belgi

Institut Saint-Martin, Alost - Belgique The Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino was founded in September 1959 by the late Reverend Canon Michal Ghijs. The choir consists of pupils and former pupils of the Saint Martins Institute in Aalst (Belgium). Each year, new young voices are being trained. The boys rehearse at half past seven in the morning, during lunch break and once a week after school time; the older singers rehearse every Friday evening. On Saturday morning all sing together from 9.30 a.m. till noon. This effort is rewarded by invaluable joy and enthusiastic reactions of the audience. Since June 2008, all rehearsals are being led by David De Geest.

The trebles in particular are unique and are frequently asked to participate in various professional choral productions. On such occasions the choir has been conducted by Andr Vandernoot, Sir Colin Davis, Alexander Rahbari, Pierre Bartholome, Pierre Cao, Rudolf Werthen, Michael Tilson Thomas, Seiji Ozawa, Rafael Frhbeck de Burgos, Laszlo Heltay, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Claudio Abbado and recently by Edward Higginbottom in cooperation with his Choir of New College Oxford. Cantate Domino visited the Vatican several times and was received by the late Pope John Paul II and by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. The choir has also performed for the Royal Family of Belgium. It gave Christmas Concerts at the Royal Palace and added lustre to the baptism ceremonies of Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel and Princess Elonore.

Cantate Domino has always given importance to its international concert tours. Not only has the choir performed in major European cities, but also in countries including Mexico, Argentina, the United States, South Africa, Israel, Egypt, Russia, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, the Philippines, Brazil, Cuba and Canada. In presenting its record of performances all over the world, the unique contribution of the choir to the international cultural relations between Belgium and all accredited missions, becomes clear. Cantate Domino is then regularly invited to perform for the Belgian Embassies, such as recently the Belgian Embassies in Mexico, Portugal, Bulgaria, South Korea and Japan. The repertoire of Cantate Domino reflects about the whole music history, from the Renaissance to the present. The choir performed works by J. Obrecht, G.P. da Palestrina, C. Monteverdi, J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, W.A. Mozart, J. Haydn, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, I. Stravinsky, B. Britten, L. Bernstein, as well as compositions of contemporary composers like A. Prt, V. Nees, and A.L. Webber. Cantate Domino collaborated with Collegium Vocale, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe, at the Royal Albert Hall in London in a performance of the Saint Matthew Passion by J.S. Bach. The collaboration between choir and soloists (among them Andreas Scholl and Ian Bostridge) was recorded on CD in 1998 by Harmonia Mundi. In the nineties the trebles of Cantate Domino worked together with the Capilla Flamenca conducted by Eugeen Schreurs and Dirk Snellings. This happened several times on occasion of the reconstructions of historical events like the baptism of Charles V and the wedding of the archdukes Albert and Isabella. With the Capilla Flamenca a CD of the Missa Alleluia by Pierre de la Rue and music by Jacob Obrecht was realized. The contribution of the trebles to those projects was internationally praised.

  • Cantate Domino was invited by famous musicologists to contribute substantially to the rediscovery of forgotten masterpieces. Cantate Domino has been collaborating with the Swiss-Argentinean ensemble Elyma conducted by Gabriel Garrido for several years, in order to perform anew the invaluable works of the Jesuit missions and the forgotten gems in South America. One of the first results of this collaboration was the recording in 2005 of Corpus Christi Cusco with the label K617, nominated for a Diapason dOr. The choir also contributed to national and international film productions like The Lord of the Rings Symphony conducted by composer Howard Shore and the film In Bruges starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Recently, the producers of A Farewell to Fools approached one Cantate Domino chorister to sing the boy solo parts in their film, starring Grard Depardieu and Harvey Keitel. In 1994 the Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino was appointed Cultural Ambassador of Flanders by the Flemish Government. This title was extended in 1995, 1996, and 1997. In 2002 the choir was elected Cultural Ambassador of Europe by the Fdration Europenne des Churs de lUnion. In 2005 King Albert II granted Reverend Canon Michal Ghijs the mark of honour of Commander of the Order of Leopold as a token of his appreciation. On February 21 2008, Michal Ghijs passed away. In June 2008 David De Geest was appointed conductor of Cantate Domino. In his new role, David conducted the choir on occasion of the baptism of Princess Elonore at the Royal Castle of Ciergnon. In September 2009 the choir issued a CD of Haydns Nelson Mass and Mozarts Sparrow Mass, in July 2010 another CD of Handels Coronation Anthems and Vivaldis Gloria, and in July 2011 the latest CD release of Mozarts Requiem. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the choir invited the famous Dresdner Kreuzchor to Aalst. This renowned German boys choir collaborated with the Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino, the ensemble arc-en-ciel and the Ghent Cathedral organist Edward De Geest, for a memorable opening concert on October 7 2009. The impressive Te Deum op. 62 by Jules Van Nuffel - for large choir, brass ensemble and organ - was performed by the 130 singers of the Dresdner Kreuzchor and the Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino.

Other highlights by Cantate Domino conducted by maestro De Geest were: the performance of Mozarts Requiem in the Brussels Cathedral for the 10th anniversary of 9/11 organized by the United States Ambassador to Belgium His Excellency Howard W. Gutman, and the concert with The Choir of New College Oxford, November 12, 2011. The Jubilation Concert Cantate Domino sounds in triptych: Bach - Handel - Mozart in the St. Martin's Church of Aalst (April 19, 2012) took place in the presence of Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde. The next Jubilation Concert with the Belgian premiere of Vanhals Missa Pastoralis in G and Haydns Missa Solemnis in C took place at the Ghent St. Bavo Cathedral on April 14, 2013 (photo).
