The performance will include original compositions by both Chick Corea and Béla Fleck featured on their first duet album, The Enchantment, as well as their brand-new live album, Two,

in addition to wholly new takes on standards.

This program is made possible by a generous gift from the late Flora Glenn Candler, a friend and patron of music at Emory University.

chick coreaChick Corea has attained iconic status in music. The keyboardist, composer, and bandleader is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and nea Jazz Master, as well as the fourth-most-nominated artist in grammy awards history with sixty-three nods—and twenty-two wins, in addition to a number of latin grammys. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Corea has touched an astonishing number of musical

bases in his career since playing with the genre-shattering bands of Miles Davis in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Yet Corea has never been more productive than in the twenty-first century, whether playing acoustic piano or electric keyboards, leading multiple bands, performing solo, or collaborating with a who’s who of music. Underscoring this, he has been named artist of the Year twice this decade in the DownBeat readers Poll. Born in 1941 in Massachusetts, Corea remains a tireless creative spirit, continually reinventing himself through his art. as the New York Times has said, he is “a luminary, ebullient and eternally youthful.”

béla fleckBéla Fleck is often considered the premier banjo player in the world. a new York City native, he picked up the banjo at age fifteen after being awed by the bluegrass music of Flatt & scruggs. While still in high school he began experimenting with playing bebop jazz on his banjo. In 1979, he released his first solo album, Crossing the Tracks, with material that ranged from straight ahead bluegrass to Chick Corea’s Spain. In 1989 he formed the genre-busting Flecktones, with

members equally talented and adventurous as himself. For his 2008 album, Throw Down Your Heart, Fleck traveled to africa to

explore the origins of the banjo and collaborate with local musicians from Uganda, Tanzania, senegal, Mali, south africa, and Madagascar. His 2013 release, The Impostor, features a pair of long-form Fleck compositions recorded with the nashville symphony and the Brooklyn rider quartet.

The recipient of many grammy awards going back to 1998, Fleck’s total count is fourteen grammys won and thirty nominations. He has been nominated for the largest number of categories of anyone in grammy history.
