Welcome to St Martin’s

“ You’ll find a rich and varied programme of music and culture at St Martin’s. ”

www.smitf.org Box Office: 020 7766 1100 2

St Martin’s has a proud history of hosting some of London’s best live classical music. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields was founded here in 1958 by Sir Neville Marriner and the then Master of Music, Jack Churchill. We have just celebrated the tenth anniversary of our Chamber Music Competition, and next year we are looking forward to celebrating the 70th anniversary of our lunchtime concert series.

Whilst we are particularly well-known for our popular evening concerts of Bach, Handel, Mozart and Vivaldi, dig deeper and you’ll find an even richer and varied programme of music and culture. Our free lunchtime concerts take place every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and feature some of the UK’s most exciting emerging young talent. Every Thursday at 1.00pm, we present Great Sacred Music, our 35-minute lunchtime sequence to speak to heart, head and soul. Led by Revd Dr Sam Wells and St Martin’s Voices, it explores through song and readings some of the great classical music of our religious heritage. And for something a little different, why not try out our Jazz and Live Music nights which take place most Wednesday evenings in our much-loved Café in the Crypt.

This season we are delighted to welcome the Australian Chamber Choir (Tuesday 16 July) in an inspiring programme of choral works from Australia and beyond Terra Australis – Land of the Imagination. On Thursday 25 July, Warren Mailley-Smith and The Piccadilly Sinfonia perform Rachmaninov’s Concerto for Piano No 2 alongside Beethoven’s fifth symphony, and on Thursday 15 August we welcome the London Mozart Players who are performing as part of their 70th anniversary season.

We look forward to welcoming you to St Martin’s.

Australian Chamber Choir

Directed by Douglas Lawrence

We are delighted to welcome you to St Martin’s as part of your International Season. Have you performed in London before?

Yes, we were at St Martin-in-the-Fields for a lunch hour concert with another choir exactly twenty years ago. My wife and I are the only people from that choir returning this time. Since then, I’ve played organ recitals at St Paul’s Cathedral and my wife, Elizabeth Anderson has given a harpsichord recital in the City of London Festival.

Tell us about the singers who make up the ACC.

Our singers range in age from eighteen to thirty-something. We have music students, graduates and post-graduates, two software engineers, two research scientists and a librarian. Of the music graduates, we have freelance singers, an organist, a violinist, one is the Chorus Manager for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, several are teachers. Of the freelance singers, Amelia Jones recently won Best Anime 2018 and Best Soundtrack for her anime and computer game vocals.

Your programme is really interesting – how did it come about?

We have given six concert tours of Europe with the ACC. Wherever we travel, we are asked questions about Australia, our music and our way of life, so we try to include some of the answers in our concert programmes.

We don’t know of anyone else who has designed a programme quite like this one. Great works for choir are aligned by year with voyages in search of Terra Australis, the fabled Great Southern Land and later expeditions charting Australia and Antarctica. It’s a historical geographical musical journey of discovery. We’ve uncovered some really amazing pieces of music. Vicente Lusitano’s ‘Heu Me’, an exercise in extreme chromaticism, was published in 1531, the same year that French Cartographer, Oronce Finé published an atlas, in which he described the inhabitants of Terra Australis. This, even though no European had yet set foot on that continent or met or even seen the inhabitants. The publication of Matthew Flinders’ ‘A Voyage to Terra Australis’ in the year of his death, 1714, aligns perfectly with the publication of Beethoven’s ‘Farewell Song’.

Other voyages and explorations align with music by Josquin des Prez, Sweelinck, Bach, Mendelssohn, Debussy, Messiaen. We have commissioned new works from Australian composers, including one setting of a piece by Indigenous poet, Bill Neidjie. The last speaker of his native Gagudju language, Neidjie wanted to ensure that the rich history of his people would not be forgotten. He broke taboos by publishing some of his traditional stories or ‘dreaming’ in two books of poetry. The poems speak of a timeless place, where the spiritual world meets the physical. Some would say that all art comes from such a place.

Summer Serenade by Candlelight

Congratulations London Mozart Players on your 70th anniversary. How are the celebrations going?

We have had a fantastic 70th year so far, performing in some of London’s great concert spaces, and we’re also involved in the reopening of Croydon’s Fairfield Halls in September. We’ve performed with musical colleagues from our celebrated history, including Jane Glover, Michael Collins and Howard Shelley, and we’ve continued one of the LMP’s core objectives – to give a platform to talented young artists such as Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Jess Gillam, and most recently Lauren Zhang, 2018’s BBC Young Musician winner.

A particular highlight was performing Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony above London in the Shangri-La Hotel At The Shard on our actual birthday in February, which was livestreamed via the Classic FM Facebook page to more than 40,000 people.

It’s exciting to have Ruth Rogers perform The Lark Ascending – how did Ruth came to play with you and why has this piece been chosen?

Ruth was appointed joint leader of the LMP in 2015 and this exquisite work is perfect for her. Having Ruth play the solo also continues another theme for the 70th birthday year which is showcasing the talent within the orchestra. We wanted to put a solo item into the programme and it’s the ideal opportunity to perform it in this iconic venue.

We are delighted to hear you perform your signature repertoire by Mozart, but you’ve programmed a beautiful set of other pieces. How did this come together?

The programme highlights the versatility of LMP but more importantly we were keen to give a wonderful summer concert that everyone can enjoy, whether a regular or a visitor to London who chances upon the concert. We have chosen a beautiful range of serenades; the dictionary meaning of ‘serenade’ is ‘to play a piece of music or sing for someone, especially for a woman while standing outside her house at night’, so this seems a perfect match for a (hopefully) balmy summer’s evening in London. We’ll always programme Mozart when we can, but we’ve added some favourite English repertoire too. The romance of Elgar and Vaughan Williams will contrast beautifully with the passion of Tchaikovsky and the elegance of Mozart. We’re really looking forward to performing it all!

Great Sacred Music and Great Sacred Choral Classics

Great Sacred Music and Great Sacred Choral Classics are unique to St Martin-in-the-Fields and have become a much-loved part of our musical and educational repertoire.

Great Sacred Music is an opportunity to listen to wonderful choral music and to engage closely with its historic origins and theological significance. St Martin’s vicar, Revd Dr Sam Wells briefly introduces each piece, pointing out features of its language and purpose, and dwelling on its wider resonances and lasting importance. St Martin’s Voices then sing with heart and soul. Great Sacred Music takes place on Thursdays at 1.00pm and is free to attend. Several times during the season we have a free evening event entitled Great Sacred Choral Classics. These events take place on selected Monday evenings at 6.30pm and explore a particular theme or longer piece of music. Revd Dr Wells paints a larger canvas around the theme or composition and draws out some of its profound value in its own time and today.

This season’s theme is Faith, Hope and Love and on Monday 15 July we focus on ‘love’ as St Martin’s Chorus perform Tallis’ If Ye Love Me, Gjeilo’s Ubi caritas and Shearing’s Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare. Great Sacred Choral Classics is free and all are welcome.

A retiring collection is taken to support the work of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
