CBSE seeks data onpvt schools’ feeNEW DELHI, June 2:
In a bid to tighten thenoose on schools charging“unreasonable” fees and levy-ing “hidden” charges, theCBSE has sought data fromprivate schools about their feestructure and increase in feesin recent years.
The move comes weeksafter the Central Board ofSecondary Education (CBSE)had warned private schoolsagainst turning into “shops” byselling uniform and books intheir premises.
“We have told schools thatthey should not charge unrea-sonable fees. The chargesshould be reasonable and thereshould be no hidden costs asthat is the more irritating partfor parents,” Union HRDMinister Prakash Javadekarsaid in an interview.
“We have sought data fromschools about their fee structureand increase in fees. Manyschools have sent it and the datais being analysed. Schoolswhich haven’t sent it have beensent reminders and penalised,”he added.
The Minister, however, didnot clarify about the penaltymeasures for schools foundguilty of overcharging and withhidden costs in their fees struc-ture.
Overcharging by schoolsand increase in fees every yearhas been a subject of concernoften raised by parents.
Gujarat had last monthintroduced “Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulationof Fees) Bill, 2017” to regulatethe exorbitant fees charged byschools.(PTI)
