2017/2018CONCORD-CARLISLE COMMUNITY CHEST

Dear Neighbors,

This was an exciting year for the Community Chest as we welcomed Jennifer Ubaldino, our new Executive Director. We look forward to working with her in fulfilling our mission. Jennifer brings a wealth of experience in non-profit organization and has put together a great team with Laura Eriksson, Associate Director, Heather Swartwood, Development Assistant, and Libby Kurten, Bookkeeper. The coming year will be their first full one together and we are very excited to see them in action.

We are fortunate to live in a community that is committed to supporting the needs of so many. The 29 non-profit organizations that we are able to support this year touch many of us, preschoolers, teens, families and the elderly; our reach is broad. Through our allocations process, we are able to focus funds to where they will make the greatest impact. We are pleased to report we have again raised and distributed more than half a million dollars to help our neighbors in need through these initiatives. We are very grateful we could award $510,000 to 29 local agencies and programs.

In addition to the support we were able to allocate to local organizations, the Community Chest also met critical needs within our community through special funds such as the Community Impact Fund, the Cornerstone Fund, the When In Need Fund, and the Scholarship Fund, which provided another $21,358 in support for innovation, emergencies, and our future.

As always, we’d like to express our deep appreciation to you, our donors, supporters, sponsors, and volunteers. You help lift up our entire community, making it a stronger, healthier, and happier place to live and work.

Warmly,Laura Davidian, Co-President 2017-2018Richard Wells, Co-President 2017-2018 & 2018-2019

Who We AreFounded in 1947 as an organization of neighbors helping neighbors, the mission of the Community Chest is to strengthen our community, marshaling resources to help neighbors in need. Harnessing the philanthropic support of local businesses and individuals who generously contribute their time and financial resources, we are able to translate that support into essential aid for non-profit human service organizations serving residents in Concord and Carlisle.

FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS Established in 2007, Field of Interest Funds are designated funds which aim to address specific needs in our community distinct from the Allocations Program. In 2017-18 over $20,000 were distributed throughout our community to support these targeted areas:

When In Need (WIN) FundThis fund helps Concord and Carlisle individuals and families with unexpected or emergency expenses to aid them in getting through a challenging time. Financial support through the WIN Fund assisted 15 of our neighbors with emergency funding, including help with rent, moving costs, utility bills, and car repairs.

Camp Scholarship FundsTwo donor supported funds provide families and students in Concord and Carlisle with scholarships for children to attend summer camp. The Community Chest was able to help over 30 children have a fun summer experience.

Law Enforcement ScholarshipFunds for this program were raised by local area youth and given back to the community by Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog when the Concord program was discontinued. Through the Law Enforcement Scholarship, the Community Chest awarded two scholarships totalling $2,988 to Concord students attending college to study law enforcement.

CORNERSTONE FUND The Cornerstone Fund was established in 1995 to help fund innovative projects and initiatives that address needs of local residents, especially youth and elderly, as they arise. Past projects include: accessible pathways at CCHS playing fields, a high-tech internship program for adults with autism, and the Integrated Preschool Playground Initiative.New initiatives are sought each year with information available through the Community Chest office.

Contributions to the above funds can be made from any member of the community to support future efforts.

Each year, the Chest identifies one volunteer leader who demonstrates an exceptional commitment to supporting its mission with the Step-Up Award in memory of Maura Lawton Perkins, who was an active Board Member and tireless supporter of the work of the Chest. This year’s award was presented to Louisa Yamartino, who led the Chest through an operational assessment, working closely with the Board and Staff to review the structure and processes of the organization. We were impressed with Louisa’s professional thoroughness, authenticity, and generosity, and feel fortunate to have grown from her insights and recommendations.

The 7th Annual Women in Philanthropy Luncheon, held at the Nashawtuc Country Club, featured a panel discussion moderated by Colette Stanzler and included Beth Athanasoulas, Penny Austen, and AJ Griswold who inspired us with stories about philanthropic leadership. The energy and enthusiasm at the event were palpable, and we are grateful for the many amazing women in our community who came together in celebration of women in philanthropy!
