ACCREDITATION STATEMENT The New England Association of Schools accredits Concord-Carlisle High School and Colleges, Inc., a non-governmental, nationally recognized organization whose affiliated institutions include elementary schools through collegiate institutions offering post-graduate instruction. Accreditation of an institution by the New England Association indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied through a peer group review process. An accredited school or assessment of institutional quality periodically applied through a peer group review process. An accredited school or college is one which has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation. Accreditation by the New England Association is partial but applies to the institution as a whole. As such, it is not a guarantee of the quality of every course or program offered, or the competence of individual graduates. Rather, it provides reasonable assurance about the quality of opportunities available to students who attend the institution. Inquiries regarding the status of an institution’s accreditation by the New England Association should be directed to the administrative staff of the school. Individuals may also contact the Association:

INTRODUCTION Each year many Concord-Carlisle High School students receive awards and scholarships in recognition of their outstanding curricular and community service achievements. As a school community, we are proud of these accomplishments and commend those students who have worked diligently to achieve the success as scholars and leaders among their peers. In May, we publicly congratulate these students at our annual Awards Night. This booklet has been prepared to provide an explanation of the annual awards and scholarships that are conferred upon our students on Awards Night. They include departmental honors and local, state, regional, and national awards and scholarships. There is also a list of scholarships for graduating seniors managed by the Concord-Carlisle Scholarship Fund, Trustees of Town Donations of the Town of Concord, and other affiliate organizations that are not conferred on awards night, but are mentioned in the graduation program. In recognizing present students, we also pay tribute to many fine individuals who have served the region or who were students here. Local corporations offer several awards; their support of education and our students is very much appreciated. Other awards are sponsored by professional educational organizations in an effort to recognize excellence in a specific academic discipline on a regional or national basis. Special one-time awards and scholarships are not described here, but are noted during the awards assembly. To each of our award recipients we extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes for continued success! Note: Awards and scholarships listed in this booklet are not always awarded each year.

Depending on the publication schedule for this book, some awards and scholarships may not be listed.

DEPARTMENT AWARDS

In the spring of each year, an awards night is held to recognize student achievement. Among the honors presented are departmental awards, which are conferred upon those students, who in the opinion of their teachers, best meet the criteria stated below for the specific department. The number of awards to be presented is based upon each department’s enrollment for the year. A general guideline of 5% of the total full-year equivalent enrollment per department is used to determine the number of awards. One criterion for determining recipients is the grade average in the program for the course for which the award is presented. Other criteria, which influence the selection procedure, include such factors as demonstrated commendable progress and the students’ contributions to a given class consistent with their level and ability. In those departments where grading is ‘Pass/Fail,’ awards are determined based upon the demonstrated skill level of the students, as well as their effort, progress and contribution to the class. In the case of work experience the evaluation by the students’ site supervisors is an important component. In rare instances it is possible for students with a grade of less than ‘A” to receive departmental awards because of their exceptionally outstanding progress which is determined by the teacher and supported by the department. Following is more specific information relative to each department within the school.

CRITERIA FOR DEPARTMENT AWARDS

Applied Technologies Recipients of applied technology awards have achieved ‘A’ level work and have demonstrated a high level of class participation and skill development commensurate with ability. Art Recipients of art awards consistently have produced a high quality of artwork, which is recognized as ‘A’ level and which reflects a high degree of creativity and skill. English Recipients of English awards have performed at a superior level. These “A” students consistently earned the highest average for their class and have also demonstrated an outstanding level of scholarship, a commitment to participation in class activities, and a particular interest in the subject.

Page 8: CONCORD-CARLISLE HIGH SCHOOL · Depending on the publication schedule for this book, some awards and scholarships may not be listed. All awards and scholarships offered are subject

Health and Fitness Recipients of health and fitness education awards must have earned a grade of ‘Pass’ and must have demonstrated excellent skill levels in most activities and units offered. They must also have very good to excellent fitness testing scores and be enthusiastic participants in all activities. Mathematics Recipients of mathematics awards have attained an outstanding level of study. In addition, they have demonstrated exceptional effort and have made a special contribution to their class, their course, and/or the math team. All ability level are considered for awards. In general, recipients have received grades of ‘A,’ although there are exceptions in cases where students are judged to have extended themselves higher levels of achievement and potential. Music Recipients of music awards have attained an average of ‘A’ or demonstrated ‘A’ level work in courses that are graded ‘Pass/Fail.’ Music department awards also recognize students for selection to District, All-State and All-Eastern Band, Chorus, Orchestra, and those who have held leadership positions in the Band or the Musical. Science Recipients of science awards must have achieved an ‘A’ average. If the number of ‘A’ students is more than 5% of the department, numerical averages are used to distinguish the award winners. Social Studies Recipients of social studies awards have performed at a superior level, which means students have attained the highest average on tests and papers for their class, have maintained a high level of participation in class activities, and have demonstrated an unusual interest through the completion of some kind of special project during the year. Special Education The special education department confers department awards at a special department celebration. Awards are presented to individual students for a high level of effort and for progress in reaching the goals specified in the student’s educational plan. World Language Recipients of fworld language awards have achieved an ‘A-‘ or ‘A’ average, depending upon the level. The number of awards is apportioned according to the total enrollment in each of he four languages taught, with more consideration being given to the upper level (third, fourth and fifth years of study) and accelerated levels within the languages. For students at the novice level an average of ‘A’ is required. For students at the intermediate and advanced levels an average of ‘A-‘ is required. Recipients of the World Language awards have outstanding achievement in the classroom. In addition, they contribute consistently to the classroom experience and demonstrate exceptional enthusiasm for language.

CONCORD-CARLISLE SCHOLARSHIPS FUND

In 1966, six members of the Concord-Carlisle School Committee established The Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund (CCSF) as a permanent charitable trust to function as an entity separate from the school system and to be overseen by a Board of Trustees composed of citizens from Concord and Carlisle. Each year, CCSF funds many scholarships and facilities scholarships awarded by its Affiliate Members. All scholarships are primarily need-based. The Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund awards two categories of scholarships – Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund Scholarships and Named Fund Scholarships. Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund Scholarships – Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates are eligible for consideration for these 50, or more, awards. Money contributed in response to the CCSF annual appeal and annual phonathon fund these awards. Named Fund Scholarships – Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates are eligible for consideration for these awards that are issued in honor of, or in memory of, individuals who have made significant contributions to the Concord-Carlisle community. Families and/or friends of the persons whom they honor have established these scholarships within the Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund. They also benefit from individual donations from members of the larger community. Some of these awards have additional requirements such as exemplary community service, leadership, specific career interests, etc. Further detail for each Named Fund is available at www.ccscholarshipfund.org Named Funds are:
