REAL POSSIBILITY

• We use this conditional if there is a real possibility that this condition will happen in the future.

REAL POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES• If you get hungry later I will share my sandwiches

with you.

Condition= Present Indefinite Tense

Result=Future Indefinite Tense (will/shall + 1st column verb)

REAL POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES CONTINUE

• I will share my sandwiches with you if you get hungry later.

Result=Future Indefinite Tense (will/shall + 1st column verb) Condition= Present Indefinite Tense

REAL POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES• It is cloudy today, so if it (rain) tomorrow I (stay) home.

• It is cloudy today, so if it rains tomorrow I will stay home.

Condition= Present Indefinite Tense

Result=Future Indefinite Tense (will/shall + 1st column verb)

REAL POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES• It is cloudy today, so I (stay) home if it (rain) tomorrow.

UNREAL POSSIBILITY OR DREAM

• We use this conditional if there is an unreal possibility that the condition will happen.

UNREAL POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES• If it snowed in summer you would find it strange.

Condition= Past Indefinite Tense

Result= would+ 1st column verb)

UNREAL POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES CONTINUE

• You would find it strange if it snowed in summer.

Result=would+1st column verb)

UNREAL POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES CONTINUE

• If I (marry) a famous actor I (be) happy.• If I married a famous actor I would be happy.

IMPORTANT NOTE• Remember that was as a conditional in this

conditional is incorrect. You need use were, e.g. If I were taller I would reach.

• The words can, shall and may cannot be used with would. Instead they must be used in these special forms;

• would + can = could, e.g. If I knew Chinese I could speak to these people.

IMPORTANT NOTE• would + shall = should, e.g. If you won the

lottery you should donate it to charity.• would + may = might, e.g. If you auditioned

you might become a star.

NO POSSIBILITY

• We use this conditional when we talk about the past. We talk about a condition in the past that did not happen. That is why there is no possibility for this condition.

NO POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES• If I had studied enough for the test I would have

done better.

Condition= Past Perfect Tense

Result= would have + 3rd column verb

NO POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES• I would have done better if I had studied enough for the

test.

Result= would have + 3rd column verb

NO POSSIBILITY EXAMPLES• If he (plant) the seeds he (eat) his vegetables by

now.• If he had planted the seeds he would have eaten

his vegetables by now.

CERTAINTY

• We use this conditional when the result of the condition is always true, like a scientific fact and always has the same result.

CERTAINTY EXAMPLES• If you drop a brick on your toe it hurts.

Condition= Present Indefinite Tense

Result= Present Indefinite Tense

CERTAINTY EXAMPLES• It hurts if you drop a brick on your toe .

Result= Present Indefinite Tense

Condition = Present Indefinite Tense

CERTAINTY EXAMPLES• If you (exercise) regularly you (get) fit.• If you exercise regularly you get fit.
