FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear parishioners,
One of the most beautiful pages of the Imitation of Christ is the one dedicated to the Few Lovers of the Cross of Jesus. I have read it so many times and each time find new insights in it. I want to present it as one of the unforgettable pages of Christianity.
“Jesus has many who love His Kingdom in Heaven, but few who bear His Cross (Luke 14:27). He has many who desire comfort, but few who desire suffering. He finds many to share His feast, but few His fasting. All desire to rejoice with Him, but few are willing to suffer for His sake. Many follow Jesus to the Breaking of Bread, but few to the drinking of the Cup of His Passion. Many admire His miracles, but few follow Him in the humiliation of His Cross. Many love Jesus as long as no hardship touches them. Many praise and bless Him, as long as they are receiving any comfort from Him. But if Jesus withdraws Himself, they fall to complaining and utter dejection.
They who love Jesus for His own sake, and not for the sake of comfort for themselves, bless Him in every trial and anguish of heart, no less than in the greatest joy. And were He never willing to bestow comfort on them, they would still always praise Him and give Him thanks.
Oh, how powerful is the pure love of Jesus, free from all self-interest and self-love! Are they not all mercenaries, who are always seeking comfort? Do they not betray themselves as lovers of self rather than of Christ, when they are always thinking of their own advantage and gain? Where will you find one who is willing to serve God without reward?”
This makes me reflect on the difference between being a fan of Jesus and a follower of Jesus: being a fan requires nothing; being a follower requires effort.
Being a Christian is to be a follower of Christ, not a fan. Jesus did not call us to be fans of his. He did call us to be followers. Over and over through the Gospels, we see Jesus say, “Come, follow me;” and further reading of the Gospels reveals that Jesus did have a lot of fans – people who liked what He said, who liked being around him and see what He might do for them or how he even might feed them; but we find that many of these fans were not real followers.
Last week we read the Gospel passage of the multiplication of bread. The text tells us that there was a great crowd that followed him. They all were not followers, but they were probably all fans of His. There were about 15,000 hungry fans. A lot of fans! Jesus recognizes that these people are only just fans of his right now, but He wants to teach them and help them learn so they will be His followers and not just fans. After teaching them the doctrine of the Eucharist, many left him. “Hard is this teaching,” they said. Their relationship with Jesus was superficial, a fan relationship. They did not have an intimate relationship with him to become his followers.
Oftentimes, we look at our relationship with Jesus and say we want to follow him, but choosing the areas in which we will follow Him. So we say, “I’ll follow Jesus, but don’t ask me to forgive the person that hurt me. I’m not going to let go of that resentment.” Or, “I’ll follow Jesus, but don’t talk to me about detachment from my money. I work hard for it.” Or “I’ll follow Jesus but don’t tell me to abstain from these sexual desires.” Or even, “I’ll follow Jesus but don’t talk to me about suffering as something good.” So we are Christians according to our own plan, to our own conception. We are fans, not followers.
Jesus says: “The one who wants to come after me (be my follower) must deny himself, take up the cross everyday and follow me“(Mt 16:24). Are we fans or followers of Jesus?
With my blessing,
Fr. Jose Giunta, IVE

The Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary Holy Day of Obliga on—August 15
Mass Times: Tues. Aug. 14 (Vigil): 7:30-PM
Wed. Aug. 15: 8-AM, 12-Noon, 5:15-PM, 7:30-PM
The Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a very old feast of the Church that has been celebrated universally since the 6th century and was defined a dogma of the Catholic Church on Nov. 1, 1950 by Pope Pius XII in “Munificen ssimus Deus”. It commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assump on into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrec on at the end of
me. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a holy day of obliga on.
The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormi on (which means "the falling asleep"). The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document en tled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document recounts, in the words of the Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, the death, laying in the tomb, and assump on of the Blessed Virgin.
As a dogma, the Assump on is a required belief of all Catholics; anyone who publicly dissents from the dogma, Pope Pius declared, "has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith."
Celebration of the Nativity of our Blessed Mother Mary
Sunday, September 9, 2012 12-Noon Mass and Procession
Join us in prayer on this special day for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world and ask the Blessed Virgin to intercede on behalf of the faithful.
Ask Our Blessed Mother to Intercede for You
As is tradition, at the end of this year’s procession Fr. José Giunta plans to carry your special prayer intentions nearly 30 feet up in the air for placement into the heart of the Shrine dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for her intercession over the next year.
Please write down your prayer petitions and/or names of loved ones. Send it with your sacrifice (donation) to Our Lady as soon as possible (not to arrive later than September 1, 2011) and we will include your intentions on a disk which will be placed into the Sacred Heart of Mary on Sunday, September 9, 2012.
