1A: Economics and Business within the Humanities and Social Sciences – Implications for the secondary school teacher – Mandy Hudson, Curriculum, Assessment and Moderation Manager, School Curriculum and Standards Authority In this session, Mandy will discuss how Economics and Business has been repositioned in the Western Australian Curriculum. In particular, Mandy will discuss what this means for teachers of Business Education, Humanities and Social Sciences and how the refocus of this Learning Area around key concepts leads to a new way of thinking and teaching. AITSL Standards: 2.1 to 2.3, 2.5 to 2.6, 3.1 to 3.6, 7.1 to 7.2 and 7.4 1B: Teacher re-registration – Melinda Bate, All Saints College and Victoria Lacey, Churchlands SHS This is both an information and hands-on session that steps teachers through the recording of professional development activities as a requirement for ongoing teacher registration. You will be shown how to map your evidence to the required standards. Please bring evidence of PD to this session and your TRBWA (Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia) registration number so that you can access your account and learn how to enter the data. AITSL Standards: 6.1, 7.1 to 7.2 and 7.4 1C: What can I copy? – Jaki Sutton, Department of Education Western Australia Jaki has spent a lifetime in the field of Education in England, New Zealand and Australia as a teacher, Deputy Principal and Principal in K-12 private and government schools, both in rural and city regions. Jaki was trained in Physical Education but has a keen interest in ICT and worked on the development and release of online school reporting. Jaki’s work with compliance issues and an introduction to law studies sparked her interest in Copyright. In this session, Jaki will provide you with a practical guide to Copyright in teaching. Jaki will specifically focus on what you should do, what you need to do and where to find help! AITSL Standards: 3.3, 4.5, 6.1 to 6.4, 7.1 to 7.2 and 7.4 1D: Superannuation and you – Kerry Harvey, GESB Superannuation It’s discovering the unknown unknowns that could turn your lifestyle in retirement to the one you’ve always dreamt about. This session has been designed to help you learn what you need to know:

• Why should you contribute to superannuation? Should the contribution be before tax or after tax? • How to start making regular contributions and what the contribution limits are. • How to determine how much wealth you’ll need to enjoy a ‘comfortable’ lifestyle in retirement. • How transition to retirement works. • Tips, online resources and much more!

Some have taught exclusively in the Business area and would like an update or introduction to the economics concepts covered in the new course. 2C: Practical ways to engage students in Accounting – Victoria Lacey, Churchlands SHS Victoria Lacey has been in the field of Education for the past 30 years. During this time she has taught Business, IT and Humanities in both city and rural schools. Victoria has also been acting Head of Technology and Enterprise, Teacher Development Coordinator for the new WACE Accounting and Finance course, and has worked at the School Curriculum and Standards Authority in the role of Curriculum Assessment Officer in charge of the Accounting and Finance and Business Management and Enterprise WACE courses. Victoria currently works at Churchlands SHS in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department. Are accountants boring? Really?? Let’s go on a fun journey that not only debunks the myth, but also engages students to study this subject. In this session, Victoria will explore classroom strategies and display examples of presentations that motivate students with theory aspects of the new ATAR Year 11 Course. AITSL Standards: 1.1 to 1.3, 1.5 to 1.6, 2.1 to 2.2, 2.5 to 2.6, 3.1 to 3.6, 6.1 to 6.4, 7.1 to 7.2 and 7.4 2D: Creating the Future – Lynn Francis MBA, MCareerDev, GradCert-VET, BEd(Sec), DipAcc, DipQA, DipVET, DipTDD, DipMgt, at Peron Alliance and Curriculum Teaching (PACT) Lynn is currently the Managing Director of PACT as well as VET Manager of Safety Bay Senior High School. Lynn’s involvement in the VET sector has covered: policy development, research, designing assessment tools, maintaining currency for VET practitioners and meeting regulatory compliance requirements. To date, Lynn has over 38 years of experience in the Education sector, 31 years as Director of an Import/Export company and 16 years managing RTOs. Over the last 9 years, Lynn has managed strategic planning in VET for seven public schools through PACT in the Rockingham region, including the development of mission statements, clarification of objectives, coordination of planning teams and achieving acceptance and implementation of plans. In this session: As educators with a captive audience, we can ‘keep it real’ whilst achieving VET compliance. How can we learn from our auditing experiences and flexibly shape our delivery of content to meet the challenges ahead? By the end of this session you will understand: the role of the internal audit, ways to stay current as a VET practitioner, and the purpose of using systems for continuous improvement. SESSION 3 (11:35AM – 12.35PM) 3A: Teaching Economics and Business to Year 5 – Liz Efthyvoulos, Applecross Primary School Liz Efthyvoulos is a Level 3 Classroom Teacher, ICT and HASS Coordinator for Applecross Primary School. Liz’s keen interest in Humanities and Social Sciences has seen her become involved as a teacher consultant working across sectors with other teachers at the School Curriculum and Standards Authority, trialing Humanities and Social Sciences common assessment tasks and developing descriptors from student work samples for Years 4-6. Liz enjoys developing authentic, connected and integrated learning tasks and sharing with fellow teaching colleagues the wide variety of resources that are available. In this session, Liz will speak about teaching Economics and Business to Year 5. Key concepts Liz will cover include: curriculum links, the importance of terminology, ideas for the development of tasks and hands-on activities and strategies to use in the classroom. Liz will provide opportunities for discussion and questions and networking in order to promote collaboration to support the introduction of a new and perhaps unfamiliar subject area. AITSL Standards: 1.1 to 1.6, 2.1 to 2.6, 3.1 to 3.6, 4.1 to 4.5, 7.1 to 7.2 and 7.4 3B: The Prospectus, Interim, and Annual Reports: Aiding teaching and learning in Accounting and Finance – Gabrielle Jolliffe, Mt Lawley SHS Struggling to engage students with an understanding of the Corporations Act, the Framework for the Preparation of General Purpose Financial Reports and the Annual General Meeting process? Utilising role play, this interactive and simulated series of Annual General Meetings based on the Western Australian listed ship building company, Austal Ltd, will bring to life the application process, the issuing of shares, directors duties and responsibilities, general purpose financial reports and ethical behaviour. Participants will take on various Board Member roles, as this session plays out the history of this very successful and global Western Australian company. Note: This session was successfully run at the 2014 Biennial BEA Conference and, due to participant response and feedback, BEWA has included it in this year’s program. The session will update participants on where Austal Ltd is today and will be run in a similar format. 3C: The first course in Accounting: Prior learning and its impact on student performance and learning styles – Brian Perrin, Curtin University, and Peter Robinson, University of Western Australia Do you ever wonder where your Accounting students end up in tertiary studies? Brian and Peter have researched the impact of prior knowledge from studying Accounting and Finance at WACE level on performance in Accounting in their first year at university, versus those students who did not have prior learning. In this session they will share their findings with you. The evidence indicates that the university sector should give greater regard to the quality of prior learning on student performance in first courses in Accounting. You will be able to take back to your schools a strong case for including Accounting and Finance in your school’s subject offerings. AITSL Standards: 1.2, 6.1 to 6.4, 7.1 to 7.2 and 7.4 3D: Health and Safety in the Workplace – Rae Hilhorst, Vocational Institute of Australia Rae Hilhorst is passionate about developing people and their organisations through training, mentoring, and coaching. Rae’s strengths lie in providing excellent classroom and online learning by developing strong relationships to support client and student needs. Rae is an expert in Workplace, Health and Safety (WHS) training, with a focus on increasing an organisation’s compliance initiatives, reducing WHS costs and increasing productivity and profitability across all areas of an organisation. In this session, Rae will discuss the history of WHS, harmonisation, costs, responsibilities, complacency and proactive behaviour in the workplace. In this session, Evelyn will provide practical advice on teaching financial ratios, and their analysis, by working through exercises you can use in the classroom. The ‘chalk and talk’ approach that traditionally provided the basis for teaching is outdated and less effective for students of the 21st century. What are the changes? What is the evidence that it actually improves the student learning experience?
