Our goal of this conference is to increase the
participant's understanding and awareness of
the theoretical and clinical advances in
wound, ostomy, and continence care.
CONFERENCE SPEAKERS, TITLES, & OBJECTIVES
Gregory Schultz, PhD
“Reduction and Prevention of Bacterial Biofilms by Concentrated Surfactant Gel”
Objectives:
Review the major concepts of “biofilm-based wound care”
Discuss effects of concentrated surfactant gel treatment on prevention and reduction of biofilms and clinical applications of concentrated surfactant gel treatment
“Battling Biofilms: Winning the War in Wounds” Objectives:
Understand important differences between the microbiology of planktonic and biofilm bacteria including high tolerance to antibiotics and antiseptics
Describe how the presence of polymicrobial biofilms may impair wound healing
“Scar Wars” Objectives:
Explain the molecular regulation of normal wound healing and the mechanisms that cause excessive scar formation (fibrosis).
Identify clinical approaches that reduce the formation of excessive scars
Scott Hoskinson, MD
“Skin and Soft Tissue Infections”
Objectives:
Define SSTI o Etiology (Bacterial, Fungal, Viral, Parasitic) o Non-purulent (Cellulitis, Necrotizing Fasciitis,
Erysipelas) o Purulent (Furuncle, Carbuncle, Abscess)
Presentation of case studies to discuss: o Diagnosis o Complications o Treatment Plan
“Bone Infections”
Objectives:
Define osteomyelitis
Discuss diagnostics o Blood Tests o Imaging studies o Bone biopsy
Presentation of case studies: o Review of risk factors o Complications o Treatment Plan
Frederick Yost, MD & Anne Jinbo PhD, CWOCN, CPNP
“Understanding the Complexity of Stomal Construction and Complications”
Objectives:
Describe at least two challenges in creating a stoma
Identify complications that can arise with stomal construction
List interventions that can be used to increase pouch adherence with difficult stomas
Peter Galpin, MD
“Shark Bites”
Objectives:
Explore complex musculo-skeletal trauma
Discuss the differences and indications for skin graft vs flap reconstructions
Discuss post injury recovery
Dwight Kellicut. MD
“ Vascular Reconstruction”
Objectives:
Understand indicators for revascularization
Describe surgical revascularization procedures
Identify complications of these procedures
Scott Yokota DPT, CSCS and Jaryn Lau BSN. CWOCN
“Positioning and Mobility of the High Risk Population”
Objectives:
Describe risk factors in the obese, elderly, incontinent, and immobile populations
Identify high risk areas for pressure injury development in the supine, sitting, and reclining positions
Identify appropriate techniques or ambulation devices for transferring and positioning to reduce pressure and promote pressure injury healing
Susie Lee, BSN, RN, WCC and Jennifer Lerner, BSN, RN
“Wheel of Wounds”
Objective:
The attendee will be able to select the most appropriate dressings for various wounds.
Doreen Akamine, MPH, RN, CWOCN, CFCN
“Individualizing NPWT: Beyond the Routine”
Objective:
Describe techniques to individualize dressing a wound using negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT)
Nicole Niwa, Pharm.D., R.Ph.
“A General Overview of Common Medications for the Ostomate”
Objectives:
Describe medications that may affect patients with an ostomy
Identify the precautions an ostomate needs to be aware of when taking different types of medications
Anne Jinbo, PhD, CWOCN, CPNP
“The Challenge of Enteral Devices”
Objectives:
Identify common complications that occur with enteral devices
Describe at least two interventions that can be considered in managing enterostomy challenges
W. Darren Hammond, PT, MPT, CWS
“Back and Cushions Oh My! - Understanding The Differences and Reimbursement Criteria for Each”
Objectives:
List four different types of power seat functions of a power wheelchair.
Discuss three potential medical or functional benefits differentiating a tilt and recline system versus a tilt only system.
Describe three specific eligibility and documentation requirements for a skin protection wheelchair cushion.
DESCRIPTION OF BREAKOUT SESSIONS
Bone Infections: An overview of the current practices in managing bone
infections
Understanding the Complexity of Stomal Construction and Complications: Description of surgical techniques used in stomal
construction and management of stomal complications
that may arise
Shark Bites: An awareness of the surgical interventions used in
caring for patient who sustain shark bites
Battling Biofilms: Winning the War in Wounds: Updates in understanding the development of biofilms
and their effects on wounds
Vascular Reconstruction: The current surgical advances in revascularization
Individualizing NPWT: Beyond the Routine: An opportunity for "hands-on" learning of application of
NPWT dressings
A General Overview of Common Medications for the Ostomate An overview of how medications can affect patients
with an ostomy and appropriate precautions that need
to be taken
Wheel of Wounds: A description of the categories of wound dressings and
when to use them
Scar Wars: An explanation of the normal wound healing/the
mechanisms that cause excessive scar formation and
identify clinical approaches that reduce the formation of
excessive scars
Positioning and Mobility of the High Risk Population: A presentation for health care providers which will
enable them to educate caregivers about the prevention
and treatment of pressure injuries as their clients'
physical state declines. The presentation will include
proper positioning, transfer training, and incontinence
care.
Back & Cushions Oh My! Understanding The Differences and Reimbursement Criteria for Each An overview of types of wheelchairs and accessories
that will help nurses and case manager with strategies
to help
make the approval process of wheelchairs and
wheelchair cushions easier and much quicker.
The Challenge of Enteral Devices: A review of types of enteral devices, potential
complications with enteral devices and management
strategies appropriate for the patient.
