How does writing, argument, and communication drive social change? What kinds of theories and knowledge are generated in universities that can contribute to local, national, and global movements? How do community leaders and academics share knowledge and expertise to build collaborative research projects and courses? The theme for the inaugural conference, Building Engaged Infrastructure, focuses on two goals. The first focus is on how we create ethical and durable partnerships between our communities and universities through teaching and research. The second focus concerns institutional support, funding, and resources for faculty and for departments themselves as they become more engaged and committed across the curriculum to community-engaged instruction and scholarship. Building that infrastructure of support, resources, and relationships is essential if the work is to be sustainable. In addition to traditional panel presentations and keynote sessions, we will foster action-oriented working sessions, DeepThink Tanks, facilitated by community leaders and prominent scholars, in which we collaboratively generate theories and action plans for university and community transformation. Presenters may submit an article for consideration in a special issue of Community Literacy Journal on the conference theme. How can writing and rhetoric programs create innovative curricular and scholarly models around social, economic, and environmental needs?
