Objectives of the Conference

Overview:

The interest in yoga and in ways of adopting a healthy lifestyle is increasing. This was apparent from the enthusiastic response to the two International Conferences on Yoga for Health and Social Transformation, held in Patanjali Yogpeeth in January, 2011 and 2013 respectively. When we practice yoga the benefits are often apparent fairly soon. People then get curious about 'how', and 'why' these pleasant changes are occurring and whether there would be any possibility of using yoga to improve our daily life, manage disease and help promote positive health. This conference aims to bring scientists together to address issues like these. We also hope that yoga practitioners and scientists will get a chance to interact and exchange ideas.

The Patanjali Research Foundation, and the parent organization, Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar, India have been active in disseminating the practice of yoga and Swami Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, the leaders of this organization, have taken Yoga and Ayurveda to the homes of millions of people across the world through their innovative teaching via satellite television.

This conference will bring together leading scientists, researchers and academicians to address the underlying mechanisms of the benefits of yoga and the value of its application in health, medicine and society.

Speakers from academically renowned institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Science (New Delhi, India), the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Bengaluru, India) and Harvard Medical School (Boston, U.S.A.) will be invited to give oral presentations on yoga and its applicationsThe speaker presentations in this conference will be primarily, but not exclusively, academic and/or evidence-based. All presentations will be in English.

Increased Mental Wellbeing and Reduced State Anxiety Following a Residential Yoga Program in Teachers

Authors: Kishore Kumar <[email protected]> & Sudarshan SharmaAbstractBackground: Reducing stress in the workplace positively impacts mental health. Teaching is of social importance. However it may receive inadequate recognition and rewards. The present study compared mental well-being and state anxiety in primary school teachers who practiced 15 days of yoga in a residential setting with those who continued with their usual routine. Methods: Two hundred and thirty six primary school teachers participated in the study. One hundred and eighteen primary school teachers (group mean ± S.D., 41.5 ± 6.0 years, 74 females) who were deputed to receive 15 days of yoga training in a residential yoga center (6 hours/ day) formed the experimental group. The non-yoga control group (group mean ± S.D., 42.3 ± 6.0 years, 79 females) consisted of 118 teachers who were continuing with their teaching routine. Results: After 15 days of the residential yoga program there was an increase in overall mental well-being (p<.001) and lower state anxiety (p<.01) (repeated measures ANOVA, followed by post-hoc multiple comparison tests). At baseline the non-yoga control group had higher levels of state anxiety presumably related to their remaining in their workplace. Conclusion: The study was a comparative controlled trial of 15 days duration. The present results suggest that after 15 days of the residential yoga program primary school teachers can increase all aspects of mental well-being with the advantage of reduced state anxiety. Key words: Mental well-being, occupational stress, school teachers, state anxiety, yogaTotal word count: 225
