ESL 115 Research Paper:Preparation for Individual 10-minute Conference

Instructions: Complete this checklist, including any questions you have, and answer the questions at the end of the worksheet before attending the individual conference with me next week. Bring this to your conference.

I have read through the sample unit 4 final IRP research paper on Compass (include questions below)

I have read through the specifications for this project in the unit 4 prompt (include questions below)

I have “self-graded” my draft using the grading rubric for the unit 4 project (include questions below)

My introduction includes a hook and provides background knowledge on the topic that anyone can understand

My thesis statement does not have phrases such as “I believe”, is not argumentative, and provides the reader with the purpose of the paper along with a preview of the three main points of the paper

I do not use personal pronouns in my paper such as “I” or “we” or “you” or “us”

I follow PIE + C structure in each of my body paragraphs

I use correct in-text citations according to APA style and according to the type of citation that I am including (quote, summary, paraphrase)

I do not have ANY plagiarism in my research paper. All of the information and ideas that are not mine are cited correctly.

I have a minimum of five academic sources, three of which are academic (UIUC)

All of my body paragraphs synthesize information from more than one source (at least 2-3 sources minimum per body paragraph)

Each of my body paragraphs describes, critiques, and provides recommendations on how to improve the solutions offered by my ONE organization for the problem

I do not try to persuade in this paper (argumentative), my goal is to inform and critique (problem-solution)

Page 2: Conference Preparation

My conclusion begins with a brief summary and flows smoothly into a broader discussion of the importance/relation of the paper to other facets of society or as a call to action. Does not introduce new, distracting information.

My research paper includes a reference list that follows APA standards.

I have self-edited my paper for grammar and spelling mistakes

The outline of my paper follows this structure:
