Conference Training Topic Descriptions

Suicide Awareness and Prevention(2 hours) - Presented by: David Edwards , CallForBackup

The #CallForBackup Suicide Awareness and Prevention Campaign is built upon the principle that peers are best suited to help one another. The stigma of seeking help for stress-related issues, and departments’ seeming lack of support, have caused many first responders to continue to suffer needlessly.

Our unique training program helps first responders understand how the stresses of the job impact them mentally, emotionally, physically, behaviorally, and spiritually, and also helps them see how cer-tain skills can make them more resistant to stress and more resilient when a major stressful event oc-curs. Most importantly, we teach them how important it is to look out for one another – to be the backup when someone needs it, and to call for backup for themselves when necessary.

Helping Support Families or Communications (60 min) - Presented by Tracy Kinenger, Easter Seals Iowa

This session will look at a healthy transition from work to home. Work as a first responder means 8 - 24 hours of active distrust and attempts at invulnerability. Home life is the opposite, requiring a great degree of trust and vulnerability. This class will explore ways in which the cu-mulative stress of the job affects our loved ones and how we can work to strengthen communi-cation and relationships at home.

Resolving Dilemmas (90 min) - Presented By: Chief Chris Scott and Chief Dennis McDaniel

This session will review possible dilemmas that peer support team members maybe confronted with during their time in the peer support role. This session will be taught be Chief Chris Scott of the West Des Moines Police Department and Chief Dennis McDaniel of the Johnston Police Department. Both instruc-tors bring invaluable experience in both peer support and the role of the ad-ministrator in peer support.

Assisting Individuals in Crisis (14 hours) - Presented By: Jeremy Sprague, Executive Director, PSF

This course is designed for anyone who desires to increase their knowledge of individual (one-on-one) crisis intervention techniques in the fields of Business & Industry, Crisis Intervention, Disaster Response, Education, Emergency Services, Employee Assistance, Healthcare, Homeland Security, Mental Health, Military, Spiritual Care, and Traumatic Stress. Crisis intervention is sometimes called “emotional first aid”. This program is designed to teach participants the fun-damentals of, and a specific protocol for, individual crisis intervention.

Closing Speaker—Retired Major Leonard (Len) Murray, Des Moines Police Department

Major Murray (Ret) spent 33 Years with the Des Moines Police Department working in various assignments and retiring as the Commander of the Homeland Security Bureau. He assisted in the development and establishment of the Des Moines Public Safety Peer Support Teams.
