Music Reading for Choir Singers: Refreshing the Skills of Adult Musicians inCommunity Ensembles

Dr. Lyn Ellen Burkett is Assistant Professor of Music atWestern Carolina University. She holds a Ph.D. in music theoryfrom Indiana University and has taught courses on topics includinganalysis of rock music, women and popular music in the U.S., andcountry music. She has studied composers and their creative workprocesses; her analytic essay on composer Ruth CrawfordSeeger’s Piano Study in Mixed Accents is included in a volumeentitled Ruth Crawford Seeger’s Worlds. An accomplished pianistand harpsichordist, she specializes in performing 20th- and 21st-century repertoire. She has studied piano with Carolyn Bridger,Mary Ann Covert, and Gary Wolf, and harpsichord with ElisabethWright and Karyl Louwenaar-Lueck.

Dr. Kathryn Sherman, NCTM, Associate Professor of PianoPedagogy, directs the undergraduate and graduate programs inpiano pedagogy and teaches keyboard skills courses at The CraneSchool of Music SUNY Potsdam. She serves as co-director of thebiennial Crane Piano Pedagogy Conference and has presented atthe Music Teachers National Association conference, the GroupPiano and Piano Pedagogy (GP3) conference, and the NationalConference on Keyboard Pedagogy. She holds the DMA in pianoperformance with an emphasis in piano pedagogy from theUniversity of Oklahoma, where she was awarded a prestigiouscampus-wide Graduate Teaching Award from the Office of theProvost. She also holds an MM from the University of Kansas andBM and BA degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Scarlette Kerr is a native of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley andreceived her Bachelor of Music (magna cum laude) in CollaborativePiano from James Madison University. She currently attends SalemCollege for studies in a Master of Music in Piano Performance andPedagogy with an emphasis in Injury-Preventive Technique, andstudent of Dr. Barbara Lister-Sink. Scarlette is current president ofthe Salem College Chapter of MTNA, and has presented at theMTNA Collegiate Piano Pedagogy Symposium, the Virginia MTAState Conference, and the National Conference on KeyboardPedagogy.

Ekin Ustunel was born in Ankara, Turkey. She was accepted intothe Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatory at the ageof nine to study under Perim Hamidoğlu. Throughout hereducation, Ekin studied with many internationally renownedpianists including: Milena Mollova, Levon Eroyan, Emre Elivar,Paolo Gualdi, Huseyin Sermet, Laurent Cabasso, Greg McCallumand Ann Schein. She pursued her first Master of Music in PianoPerformance degree at UNCG as a pupil of Dr. Andrew Willis, witha focus on historical performance on harpsichord, fortepiano, andstudied organ with Dr. André Lash. Ekin is pursuing her secondMaster’s degree at Salem College, under the tutelage of Dr.Barbara Lister-Sink.

Celeste Watson has a passion for helping othersenjoy music by playing the piano with exciting musicalityand scientifically-informed technique. As a student, shewon numerous competitions, including the AndersonConcerto Auditions and performed with the HutchinsonSymphony Orchestra. She now maintains a full- timeprivate studio and is a candidate for the masters’ degreein Piano Performance and Pedagogy at SalemCollege. She is a FAME-certified teacher for First Steps inMusic, and holds a Certificate iin Injury-PreventativeKeyboard Technique and a master’s degree in biblicallanguages, and is the Co-Vice President of SalemCollege’s Chapter of the Music Teachers’ NationalAssociation.

Annie Wang is originally from Shenzhen China. She iscurrently pursuing a masters’ degree at Salem Collegewhere she studies piano with Dr. Barbara Lister-Sink.Annie completed her Bachelor of Music degree at MountAllison University, New Brunswick, Canada and studiedunder both Lynn Johnson and Dr. David Rogosin. Herexperience spans multiple areas through performance,teaching, conducting and composition. She currentlyaccompanies instrumentalists and works as a choirassistant at Salem College.

A native of Valdosta, Georgia, Lauren Willard studiedat Carson-Newman University and completed a Bachelorof Music degree with a major in piano performance atValdosta State University. In May 2019 she completed asecond bachelor’s degree with dual majors in organperformance and vocal performance at Salem College,and is currently working towards a graduate degree inorgan performance and pedagogy at Salem. Shecurrently serves as Organist and Children’s Choir Directorat Clemmons Moravian Church, and teaches piano andvoice at Upbeat Music Company in Lewisville, NorthCarolina. Lauren lives in Lewisville with her husband andtwo daughters.

Dr. Dylan Savage, NCTM is co-author of the popularpiano pedagogy book A Symposium for Pianists andTeachers: Strategies to Develop the Mind and Body forOptimal Performance, writer of numerous articles inAmerican Music Teacher, Clavier Companion, ClavierMagazine, and Pianoforte, and creator of What's Music Gotto Do With It – a consulting business that uses musicperformance to inform people in non-music fields onadvanced universal skill use. He is a first place winner ofthe Rome Festival Orchestra Competition and aBösendorfer Concert Artist. He teaches at the University ofNorth Carolina - Charlotte.

Dr. Martha Hilley, NCTM, has recently retired ascoordinator of group piano and pedagogy at the University ofTexas at Austin Butler School of Music. Both texts are the first touse web based tutorials and dedicated web sites in grouppiano instruction. Martha Hilley joins us for our stateconference representing our national organization, MusicTeachers National Association as our President.

Dr. Damon Sink is a faculty member in the School ofMusic where he teaches courses in Music Theory, MIDI andsynthesis, and recording arts, and conducts the WesternCarolina Civic Orchestra. He is a graduate of the CincinnatiCollege-Conservatory of Music, where he studiedcomposition with Joel Hoffman, and Samuel Adler. Inaddition to his creative work as a composer, Dr. Sink hasworked in other areas of media production, advertising,video, film, and classical and jazz recording. Before comingto Western, he served as a full- time member on thefaculties of Xavier University and The University of Dayton.

Dr. Travis Bennett joined the faculty of Western CarolinaUniversity in 2006, where he teaches horn, conducts the HornChoir, and coaches chamber music ensembles. He is an activechamber and orchestral musician, performing regularly with theSmoky Mountain Brass Quintet and the Asheville Symphony, aswell as other regional ensembles. He has served as a guestartist and teacher in Argentina, and has performed with theSMBQ in China, Germany, the Czech Republic, Jamaica,Hungary, Romania, Mexico and South Africa. He is married tohis high school sweetheart, Julie, and they have two sons, Tylerand Preston.

Cathy Pescevich Kreplin, presenter, is a lifelong musicalteaching artist, vocalist, flutist, piano accompanist and musicdirector. She holds a Bachelor of Science doubleconcentration in Music Performance (voice/flute) and AudioEngineering from New York University. Her degree wasearned through coursework at Yale University, New YorkUniversity and the Institute of Audio Research. She hasmaintained a studio for private music instruction for over 40years and currently is Co-Director of Ascencion MusicAcademy with classical guitarist Gordon Kreplin at the OuterBanks.

Dr. Shannon Thompson is Professor of Music in the Schoolof Music at Western Carolina University where she has led theclarinet studio since 1997. Dr. Thompson has alsoserved on the faculty of InterHarmony International MusicFestival in Italy. Her performances as recitalist, chambermusician, and concerto soloist include a wide range ofrepertoire and collaborations with composers.

Kim Neidlinger attended the University of Tennessee whereshe earned the B.S. in Music Education (voice, piano) and theM. Mus. in Choral Conducting studying under Don Neuen.Mid-career, she attended Georgia Southern Universityreceiving the Education Specialist degree in Music Education(ABD). She has performed with the Atlanta SymphonyOrchestra Chorus under the direction of Robert Shaw, TheWarwick Choral Festival with the London Symphony FestivalOrchestra under the direction of Simon Halsey, and as asoloist with the Savannah Symphony Chorus.

Dr. Dmitri Shteinberg has been on the faculty at UNCSAsince 2011. Prior to that, he held a piano faculty position at theVirginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. His solo and chambermusic performances include the Stern Auditorium at CarnegieHall, the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, festivals inEngland, France and Germany, and a number of live radiobroadcasts from New York, Chicago and Jerusalem, as well as afeature on "Performance Today.”

Dr. Carol Ann Barry, NCTM, has given lectures andpedagogy workshops in multiple states on the local andnational level. She has a DMA from James MadisonUniversity and is the founder of Piano Pedagogues KeyInternational. She is currently pursuing a video projectwhich offers online teacher training and workshops. Sheteaches in Cary, NC and works with students frombeginner levels to the collegiate level.

Although more active as solo pianists, Drs. Jae Won Kim andMark Tollefsen enjoy performing together and have collaboratedoften during the past several years. As a duo, they havepresented recitals in Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, andWisconsin and were featured performers at the American ArtsExperience (St. Louis, MO), the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conferenceof the College Music Society (Conway, SC), the World PianoConference (Novi Sad, Serbia), and the Karlovac Piano Festival(Karlovac, Croatia). This summer, they performed a recital inLuxembourg City sponsored by the Korean Association ofLuxembourg and the Korean Embassy.

Exploring the Piano Works of Meredith Monk

Dr. Annie Jeng enjoys a diverse career as an internationally activeperformer, educator, and arts entrepreneur. She has performedwidely in such settings as the Brancaleoni International MusicFestival in Italy, the Kennedy Center, and in Spain and China. Herprojects include a concert series at the Ann Arbor DistillingCompany and facilitating music workshops in Michigan’s prisonsthrough the Prison Creative Arts Project. She received her DMA inPiano Performance and Pedagogy at University of Michigan underthe mentorship of Logan Skelton and John Ellis. Annie began herposition as Assistant Professor of Piano and Pedagogy atUniversity of North Carolina Greensboro in Fall 2019.

Assistant Professor of Music Composition, Appalachian State University

About the Composition: Inspired by Kinstugi, this composition deals with brokenness and healing. The piece begins with its melodic material arising from the noise of the ensemble. Once completed, the melody is shattered into fragmented bits of pitches. After exploring these fragments, the melody is reconstructed into a patchwork that completes the initial melody through brokenness and restoration.

About the Composer: Andrew Hannon’s musical life is a combination of diverse influences. He composes for the concert stage and has performed in metal core bands. His music alternates between moments of violence and serenity creating an element of tension. In addition to musical tension, he incorporates technology as an aesthetic statement. For example, Two Lost Loves draws its material from anonymous voicemails, Night Watch transmits audio through audience’s smart devices, and News Flash uses a YouTube video as source material for audio and video.

His compositions are performed throughout the United States at SEAMUS, North American Saxophone Alliance national conference, College Music Society’s national conferences, Electroacoustic Barn Dance, and USF New Music Festival. His compositions are published by Warwick Music and Potenza Music. He strives to foster creative community by collaborating with performers and mentoring students.

Andrew earned his DMA in music composition from the University of South Carolina. His research focuses on composition pedagogy, fear and aural skills, and the music of Ligeti. He is Assistant Professor of Music Composition at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.
