Dear colleagues, Herewith we would like to invite you to take active participation presenting your scientific and professional work at the 7th International Scientific and Professional Conference “CRISIS MANAGEMENT DAYS” that will take place on 22 and 23 May 2014 in Zagreb, Hotel Aristos, Croatia. The Conference is being held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Croatia, prof. Ivo Josipović, PhD. CONFERENCE THEME: CONTEMPORARY CRISIS MANAGEMENT POLICIES AND SYSTEMS The University of Applied Sciences Velika Gorica is the first institution of higher education in the Republic of Croatia that started with the education and training of highly qualified professional staff required in crisis management. Seven years ago, our educational programmes have been enriched by the Conference “CRISIS MANAGEMENT DAYS” which was our attempt to gather all the experts and professionals who deal in different ways with the issues of contemporary security and crisis management. In modern world, we face numerous challenges, threats and risks that shape various types of crisis situations. Complexity and openness of modern societies, various forms of economic, social and political activities, as well as disasters caused by natural disturbances, create on a daily basis challenges and threats we face using different procedures and instruments. Manifestations of contemporary crises indicate their complexity and demanding nature in terms of a structured and organized response. Management of a contemporary crisis represents very complex operations which last for a long time and which involve different stakeholders, from political to business ones, as well as individuals who are endangered by the crisis. Complexity and demands of contemporary crises, preparations, organization of a response when a crisis occurs, post-crisis recovery and the management of the changes necessary for the better functioning of the system, demand the creation of coherent crisis management policies. Contemporary policies today do not rely only on the state capacities but are open to the participation of citizens, non-governmental organizations, companies and other important stakeholders active in a community. Crises are situations in which we have to act since every failure to act could lead to even greater consequences for the individual, organization or a community. Crises are characterized by a high level of uncertainty which creates pressures to reduce it, which is a very demanding task in the conditions when one lacks information. Crisis communication is an important field that formulates the interpretation and symbols of a crisis, which reduce uncertainty and create the assumptions for the functioning of crisis response systems. After the end of crisis situations, an individual, organization or a community begin to recover and collect lessons learned that can be used to manage system changes with the purpose of a more efficient action in the future crisis situations. All this points to an organized comprehensive approach to the management of contemporary crises in complex communities like the present ones, and this approach ensures the formation of public policies and development of proper systems that enable efficient instruments of crisis response.
