Baidu es el lider claro
B2C y C2C E-commerceInternet & E-Commerce in China
En B2C E-Commerce market, T-Mall** (天猫/Tianmiao) es el lider claroEn "C2C“ Taobao** (淘宝网/Taobao Wang)
Relative market shares• Taobao is the absolute C2C market leader
Taobao’s business model• Taobao is a platform where most merchants are actually the companies
themselves. • TaoBao is popularly known as the Chinese eBay but the main differences are:
− there is no listing fee− Taobao does not charge any commission on sales− communication between seller and buyer is openly facilitated− most of the products available are new (no second-hand products )− most of the sellers are companies (not individuals).
“C2C” Taobao
* Maintenance fees can be levied when transaction levels go beyond a certain threshold ** Founded by Alibaba Group in May 10, 2003, Taobao Marketplace facilitates consumer-to-consumer (C2C) retail by providing a platform for small businesses and individual entrepreneurs to open online retail stores. In April 2008, Taobao introduced a dedicated B2C platform called Taobao Mall to complement its C2C marketplace. It became an independent business in June 2011 and changed its Chinese name to Tian Mao (Tmall) in January 2012.
Cuotas de mercado relativas.• Tmall is the clear market leader with ~ 40% market share• 360buy (now JD) is the clear challenger (~ 15% market share) while 4 other
players account respectively for 2-3% market share (including Joyo Amazon)• This 3 channels control approx 60% of the B2C market in Mainland China.
Tmall’s business model• To make an analogy, Tmall is rather a large shopping mall while
360buy/Amazon/.. are large hypermarkets• Tmall is a platform where brands can open their official shop. Inventory is the
brands (or the brands’ official distributors’) responsibility – not Tmall’s.• Opening a Tmall store requires brands to pay set-up and maintenance fees *,
and additional services (such as product promotion) are available at extra cost. Brands have to pay a percentage of the sales as commissions (% vary per category).

Third-party B2B platforms (B2B for SMEs)
• Platforms used mainly by Small and Medium Enterprises• Offer: information services (product catalogs and companies information), online
transactions, online contract signatures, online payment, online logistics information tracking
• Examples: Alibaba, hc360, etc.Large enterprises’ self-owned B2B sites
• Enable customers to order online directly• Examples : Cisco, Dell, etc.Vertical industry B2B websites
• Dedicated third-party B2B platforms focusing on one specific industry (online travel booking, online professional shopping, etc.)
• Advantages: professional / adapted for one industry, more industry specific resources, more relevant (local and international) members
• Example : China chemistry website (http://china.chemnet.com), etc.
Relative market shares• Alibaba is the market leader in the segment of third party B2B platforms• Its market shares are however decreasing due to new challengers (Alibaba’s market share in
Q1 2010 = 58,7% versus market share end 2012 = 42,3%)• New challengers include vertical platforms (like Mysteel), etc.
Alibaba’s business model• Alibaba can be considered as one of the rare Chinese web innovation (not a copycat)• Alibaba is mostly for non-branded manufacturers (but not only) and has been mainly so far an
informational site (platform listing suppliers and products) - but the transactional feature exist on the site and have been ramped up recently
• Alibaba.com has 3 major marketplaces:− the company’s international marketplacein English (www.alibaba.com), serving to bring
together importers and exporters from over 240 countries and regions. − Alibaba.com ‘s transaction-based wholesale platform, AliExpress (www.aliexpress.com),
which allows smaller buyers to buy small quantities of goods at wholesale prices.− the Chinese marketplace (www.1688.com), developed for domestic B2B trade in China.
