Conferencing with Connect
Open web browser.
Plug in microphone or webcam
Quick Key points checklist (see following pages) •Plug in webcam or headset before starting Connect (don’t install drivers unless it is your own computer) • Identify microphone (in audio setup wizard) • Turn mic on/double check volume • Make sure speaker volume is low and not too close to your microphone to reduce any feedback.
Log in to Connect ‘room’ http://connect.exeter.ac.uk/’yourroom’
Either with your Uni details or if you aren’t part of the University select the ‘Guest’ option.
Check the audio settings
Using the ‘Wizard’ select Mic and then check
recording levels.
Allow Adobe to install Flash drivers if offered.
If microphone/webcam not listed, unplug it, plug it in again and restart the Wizard. If plugging in a webcam or mic to a lecture theatre PC – say ‘No’ when prompted to install drivers (usually prompted twice)
Having set it, then turn ‘Audio’ on
Mic should turn ‘green’ and you should see little green lines radiating from it.
When speaking you should see ‘waves’ from the mic icon
You can also adjust manually the audio volume from the ‘mic’ menu. If the mic or webcam is relatively close to the podium or speaker – volume setting is probably best around the ‘85’ mark.
To avoid any ‘incoming’ sounds keep speaker volume low
If using a webcam (and you are in Connect as a Presenter)
Turn on the camera – the initial image will be small so that you can preview it but you will need to click the option to ‘Start sharing’
If you want to ‘Share’ use the menu in the middle of the pod
If plugins are offered, choose to install them. This window will then recede to the task bar at the bottom of the screen (small white and green icon ) – click on it to reopen it.
First choose share screen
Then select the Desktop option (monitor option won’t be offered if there is only one
monitor)
When you are sharing your screen you should see a mini dashboard at the bottom of your Connect screen
Expand and collapse the dashboard here
Full screen Connect here
Upload a file for sharing
You can upload a ppt, flv or pdf to
share in a presentation

PPTs loaded in the Connect ‘Share pod’ can be navigated using the controls at the bottom or on the right
There are Chat, file sharing and other options that may be made available
If your role is a ‘participant’ you can use the ‘Chat’tool at any point, but you will need to use
the ‘Raise hand’ to speak audibly.
Raise hand to speak
Recording a meeting
Choose Record meeting from the ‘Meeting’ menu
Give the session a useful name to distinguish it from other recordings
From the ‘Red dot’ in the upper right you will be able to Pause or Stop recording at any time (everything that happens in Connect is recorded)
Double check that your microphone is active ie ‘green’
If you are the ‘Host’ or convenor
