Feb. 9th , 2020 Sunday of the Prodigal Son From the Desk of the Pastor…

Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

You will love this! It’s a fast, flying, summary of today’s Gospel story of the Prodigal Son.

“Feeling footloose and frisky, a feather-brained fellow forced his fond father to fork over

the family finances. He flew far to foreign fields and frittered his fortune feasting

fabulously with faithless friends. Finally facing famine and fleeced by his fellows in folly,

he found himself a feed-flinger in a filthy farmyard. Fairly famished he fain would have

filled his frame with the foraged foods of the fodder fragments left by the filthy farmyard

creatures.

'Fooey', he said, 'My father's flunkies fare far fancier,' the frazzled fugitive found

feverishly, frankly facing facts. Frustrated by failure and filled with foreboding he

forthwith fled to his family. Falling at his father's feet, he floundered forlornly. 'Father, I

have flunked and fruitlessly forfeited family favor.'

But the faithful father, forestalling further flinching frantically flagged the flunkies. 'Fetch

forth the finest fatling and fix a feast.' But the fugitive's fault-finding frater frowned on the

fickle forgiveness of the former folderol. His fury flashed.

But fussing was futile, for the far-sighted father figured, such filial fidelity is fine, but what

forbids fervent festivity? The fugitive is found! "Unfurl the flags, with fanfares flaring! Let

fun and frolic freely flow!" "Former failure is forgotten, folly is forsaken! And forgiveness

forms the foundation for future fortitude." ”

I don’t know about you, but if I were the teacher tasked with grading this fine, flowing

composition I think I would give the student a big “F”…for fantastic! The best part of the

composition is the last line because it is so very true: forgiveness really does form a firm

and faithful foundation for future fortitude. If you fall, and we all do, then just get up again,

go to confession and fight with fortitude next time knowing that you have a loving Father

who is with you!

In Christ,

Jason, priest and sinner

Sunday Gospel Reading Gospel According to St. Luke 15:11-32

11 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons; 12 and the younger of them said

to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that falls to me.’ And he divided

his living between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had

and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose

living. 14 And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and

he began to be in want. 15 So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that

country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have fed

on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. 17 But when he came to

himself he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to

spare, but I perish here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say

to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; 19 I am no longer worthy

to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ 20 And he arose and

came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had

compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him,

‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be

called your son.’[b] 22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe,

and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; 23 and bring the

fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; 24 for this my son was dead, and

is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to make merry.

25 “Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he

heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what this

meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the

fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.’ 28 But he was angry and

refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29 but he answered his father,

‘Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet

you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But when this

son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the

fatted calf!’ 31 And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine

is yours. 32 It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead,

and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

the names of your deceased ones and drop them in the collection baskets. The forms

☛Parish night at the movies!!! On Tuesday February 25th we

will be seeing the movie “Free Burma Rangers” which is “a

documentary film exploring the extraordinary 20-year journey of

missionaries Dave and Karen Eubank. The film follows Dave, Karen,

and their three young children, as they venture into war zones where

they are fighting to bring hope…The film is a real-life adventure

movie. Viewers will follow the family into firefights, heroic rescues,

and experience life-changing ministry. In the midst of this unprecedented journey, you will witness

amazing lessons of faith from one of the most inspiring families in the world.” We will meet at the

Robinson Cinemark theater at 6:45pm and the film starts at 7 pm. If you would like to sit with the

group, please contact Matt Ketcham at 720-556-7491 no later than Feb. 11th. Feel free to buy your

own ticket as well but I would recommend buying early so it is not sold out – the theater only seats

45 people and this movie will only be in theaters for two days!! Age for this movie is 17+. Let’s

pray that this movie inspires us to be missionaries wherever we are! Tickets can be purchased at the

fish, eggs, meat products or dairy products) served following the Liturgy with a

discussion on a particular topic. We need volunteers to provide meals – plan to cook

for about 10-15 people. Please call the office at 412-279-4652 or Matthew at 720-556-

Reminders & Notes

☛ The new time for Vespers (evening prayer service) on Saturday will be at 6 pm

each week in the church beginning on Feb. 1st. After each service we will have a

talk on Apologetics (defense of the faith). To this end, please borrow the new

Apologetics books at the entrance of the Church. Return when done reading and

borrow a new book. So much to learn, so little time!

☛ Parents, you have been given a great responsibility! Please find in the vestibule

new prayer books and saint books for your family. Your child’s school is not called by

God to pass on the faith to them, you are. This is your unique privilege and you have

so little time to do so. I hope all these books are gone by the end of the weekend! Free

will donations in candle box will suffice.

☛ Your parish provided a foundation to you in life, providing for your spiritual and

moral growth. Please remember our parish in your Last Will & Testament. The wording

to do this is as follows: “I give and bequeath to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic

Church, Carnegie, __% of the residue of my estate [or: the sum of $____].” You can

direct your bequest in any way you wish: it can go towards iconography in the church

interior, a chandelier for our church, toward missionary activity so that we spread the

faith, toward a Catholic educational fund for young women or young men in the parish,

toward church gardening expenses, toward the upkeep of our beautiful cemetery, your

funds can be designated in any way you wish.

☛ Free, used Bibles in the vestibule.

☛ Please take a prayer book from vestibule. Free will offering can be given in

candles basket.

☛ “We must pray without tiring, for the salvation of mankind does not depend on material

success; nor on sciences that cloud the intellect. Neither does it depend on arms and human

industries, but on Jesus alone.” --St Frances Xavier Cabrini. Do you desire to learn how to pray with the Sacred Scriptures? Are you interested in following the Church’s Scripture plan throughout the Liturgical year? Please take a card in the back of the Church with the current month’s Scripture readings on it as well as instructions on how to do Lectio Divina. This is an ancient method of prayer that is used to encounter the living God in His Word. You can use

these cards as a bookmark in your Bible to pray with the readings each day. Questions on this: call Matt Ketcham at 720-556-7491.
