Good Afternoon!Today we will be learning about

Temperature, changes, & negative numbers

Let’s warm up :

Complete the conversion tables:

Hours 4 7 8

Minutes

1)

Calculate how much time has elapsed between:

2) 5:05 A.M. and 10:10 A.M.?

3) 2:20 P.M. and 5:40 P.M.?

4) 9:40 P.M. and 2:25 A.M.?

Let’s review the previous topicCalendar and Years

Calendar displays the layout of the dates of a month and their corresponding day of the week of a

particular year.Ordinal Number: A number used to tell order or

position. They are used to say a date in a calendar.

EXAMPLE: 1st, 7th, and 19th, or first, seventh, and nineteenth are ordinal numbers.

June 26 can also be called the

26th of June, or the twenty-sixth.

The layout of the calendar helps to know

dates and their corresponding day in a

particular month.

A year is 365 days. But in the Leap year the number of days become 366 as the month February

has 29 days.

The Leap year occur once every four years. The years 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012,………… are Leap

Use May 23 as the first day and count on 21 days.

The 21 days after May 23 is June 13.

Let’s start the topicTemperature, changes, & negative numbers

Temperature: It is a measurement that tells how hot or cold something is.

When the temperature rises, I wear lighter clothing.

There are 2 scales for measuring temperature:

1) Fahrenheit Scale

2) Celsius Scale

The metric system uses the Celsius scale to measure temperature. However, temperatures are still measured on the Fahrenheit scale in the U.S.

CONFIDENTIAL 10

The Fahrenheit Scale and the Celsius Scale measure the same thing

(temperature!), just using different numbers.

If you freeze water, it measures 0° in Celsius, but 32° in Fahrenheit.

If you boil water, it measures 100° in Celsius, but 212° in Fahrenheit.

The difference between freezing and boiling is 100° in Celsius, but 180° in Fahrenheit.

Therefore each degree on the Fahrenheit scale is equal to 100 or 5 degrees on the Celsius scale. 180 9

The temperatures below 0°F or 0°C are negative temperatures.

You read 20 degrees Fahrenheit below zero as - 20°F.

Temperatures can be below 0°F or 0°C.

What is the temperature change from 15°F to -50°F?

Step 1: Find the change in temperature from 15°F to 0°F .

The change is 15°F.

CONFIDENTIAL 13

Step 2: Find the change in temperature from 0°F to -50°F.

The change is 50°F.

Step 3: Add the 2 changes.

15°F + 50°F = 65°F.

The temperature change is 65°F.

Conversion Method

To convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit , first multiply by 180 or 9, then add

32. 100 5

Celsius to Fahrenheit

Celsius to Fahrenheit = (°C × 9) + 32 = °F

5

Fahrenheit to Celsius To convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius, first subtract 32 , then multiply by 100 or 5. 180 9Fahrenheit to Celsius =(°F - 32) x 5 =

°C 9

CONFIDENTIAL 15

Conversion Method

Convert 98.6° Fahrenheit to Celsius.

First: 98.6° - 32 = 66.6

Then: 66.6× 5 = 333 = 37° C 9 9

Therefore,

98.6° F = 37° C

Fahrenheit to Celsius =(°F - 32) x 5 = °C

9

CONFIDENTIAL 16

Conversion Method

Convert 26° Celsius to Fahrenheit.

First: 26° × 9 = 234 = 46.8 5 5

Then: 46.8 + 32 = 78.8° F

Therefore,

26° C = 78.8° F

Celsius to Fahrenheit = (°C × 9) + 32 = °F
