Understanding the IBM Integration Bus – IIB

IBM Integration Bus is formerly known as WebSphere Message Broker.

It is IBM's integration broker from the WebSphere product family that allows business information to flow between disparate applications across multiple hardware and software platforms.

Business Functionalities of IIB v10.0

Route messages to one or more of many destinations

Transform messages to an alternative representation

Invoke Web services to retrieve data

Understanding the IBM Integration Bus – Cont’d

What are the main components of IIB/WMB?

The 3 main components in IIB/WMB are given below:• Runtime - The broker runtime is the main processing component to which

development artifacts are deployed.

• Development - The Toolkit is used for development of message flows and other development artifacts.

• Administration - Message Broker Explorer is an administration tool used to perform deploys, create brokers or new execution groups, and enable flow monitoring. WMB V8 provides a WebUI tool to view the broker runtime or resources deployed in a browser.

Does IIB/WMB require a database to function?

From Message Broker v7.0 onwards, there is no database pre-requisite, the product does not require a database for any internal function.

Co-existence of MQ v8.0 and IIB v10.0 – Cont’d

MQ v8.0:

• MQ 8.0 supports queue managers on Linux 64-bit platforms and does not support queue managers any longer on the Linux x86 32-bit platform.

• This means that you cannot install the MQ 8.0 server code on Linux x86 32-bit, although you can install the MQ 8.0 client code, which is supported in both Linux 64-bit and 32-bit platforms

• A 7.0, 7.1, 7.5 and 8.0 client can connect to all queue managers, non-version 7, as well as version 7.0, 7.1, 7.5 and 8.0

• A 7.0, 7.1, 7.5 and 8.0 queue manager can interact with all clients, non-version 7, as well as version 7.0, 7.1, and 8.0

Co-existence of MQ v8.0 and IIB v10.0 – Cont’d

IIB v10.0:

• IBM Integration Bus Version 10.0 can co-exist with previous versions as follows:• IIB v9

• WebSphere Message Broker Version 8.0

• WebSphere Message Broker Version 7.0.

• Multiple versions of IIB Toolkit can be installed on the same machine.

• You can not use IIB v10.0 Toolkit to connect to a V9 broker or vice versa

Note:• Message Broker v7.0.0.5, v8.0 and IIB v9.0 can migrate to IIB v10.0

Co-existence of MQ v8.0 and IIB v10.0 – Cont’d

• On distributed systems, WebSphere MQ is no longer a prerequisite for using IBM Integration Bus Version 10, which means that you can develop and deploy applications with IBM Integration Bus without needing WebSphere MQ.

• However, some IBM Integration Bus features require access to WebSphere MQ, including the MQ nodes and the event-driven processing nodes that are used for aggregation and timeout flows, message collections, and message sequences.

• For such instances the following MQ versions are supported for IIB v10.0:

12

MQ v8.0 & IBM Integration Bus v10.0

IIB v10.0 Architecture

• IIB processes messages in two ways: message routing and message transformation

MQ v8.0 & IBM Integration Bus v10.0

User Roles & Environments – IIB v10.0

• Typically the Application Developer will not be aware of the environment to which message flows will be deployed; this is the responsibility of the broker administrator.

• Similarly, the broker administrator may not be aware of the exact message flow logic supplied by the application developer.

• IIB provides tools and techniques to enable IIB applications to easily flow between the application developer and administrator

MQ v8.0 Installation Procedure

• WebSphere MQ requires a user ID of the name mqm, with a primary group of mqm.

• The mqm user ID owns the directories and files that contain the resources associated with the product

File System Permissions for WebSphere MQ Directories:

• Users in the mqm group have write access to these directories and files.• The files and directories in this category are only accessible to WebSphere MQ

Administrators (members of the 'mqm' group) and the WebSphere MQ Queue Manager processes.• -rwxrwx--- mqm:mqm (UNIX and Linux)

• The executables under /usr/mqm or /opt/mqm and they are owned by "root"

• The data of the queue managers under /var/mqm, which is owned by "mqm“

Note:• Please do NOT change the file ownership and permissions for the executable’s in

/usr/mqm or /opt/mqm17

MQ v8.0 Installation Procedure – Cont’d

• i386 is the name of the 32-bit Operating System • X86_64 is the name of the 64-bit Operating System

MQ Config Script:

• IBM provides the mqconfig script to simplify the task of configuring your system.

• If your environment is running with MQ v8.0, then MQ Config script is included in the binaries.

• For other MQ versions, MQ Config script should be downloaded separately

18

MQ v8.0 Installation Procedure – Cont’d

• If you do not configure your operating system parameters properly, your IBM MQ queue managers may run out of system resources while handling your production workload.

• Depending on the resource which was exhausted, MQ may return an error to the application (like MQRC_RESOURCE_PROBLEM, reason code 2012), write a message to its error logs, create FDC files in the /var/mqm/errors directory, or even terminate

Note: • The mqconfig script compares your system settings against these IBM default limits,

which should be sufficient for many systems.

• However, even these settings may be insufficient if you have a very busy system with high production volumes, or if your system is also hosting other products like databases or application servers.

MQ Config Script – Cont’d:

Note:• Do not assume that an "all clear" report from mqconfig means you cannot run out

of resources.

• Run the mqconfig script when your system is processing its peak volume to ensure that the actual resource usage, shown as a percentage, is not excessively high.

• The mqconfig script will verify all of the kernel parameters for MQ and check the resource limits and shell settings for the current user

IIB v10.0 Installation Procedure on Linux

• IBM Integration Bus can be installed on UNIX, either for use by a single user or for use by multiple users which is the shared.

Single User Installation:

• As a user without administrative rights, you can create a single-user installation of IBM Integration Bus in your home directory.

• This single-user installation is then accessible only by your user ID

Shared Installation:

• As a user with administrative rights, you can create a shared installation of IBM Integration Bus.

• To authorize any users of the computer to access the shared installation of IBM Integration Bus, add the users to the mqbrkrs group by using the security facilities that are provided by your operating system.
