CONFLICT IN THE MIDDLE EASTFebruary 2013
Mrs. Mirick
REASON FOR CONFLICT #1
Limited resources, such as water and food. Only 3 major rivers in the area
REASON FOR CONFLICT #2
The Middle East is in a central location. It is in the middle of Asia, Europe, and Africa. Therefore, you must go through it in order to get to other places. This creates a lot of movement (migration) in
the area, which creates conflict naturally. Also, people want to control (or own) this
area in order to control the trade routes and have power.
REASON FOR CONFLICT #3
Vast amounts of oil have been discovered here in the last century and whoever controls the oil has lots of money. This money helps pay for land and internal
improvements (infrastructure) and helps to pay for wars against other countries.
REASON FOR CONFLICT #4
Different religions All 3 major monotheistic religions have
started in the Middle East (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity)
These 3 religions do not get along well at times, especially the Jews and Muslims.
REASON FOR CONFLICT #5 Zionism-the movement of Jews from all over the
world back to the Holy Land (Israel) In ancient times the Jews were kicked out of
the Holy Land and dispersed throughout the world (called the diaspora).
Arabs moved into the area they left behind and have lived there ever since.
Right before the World Wars, Jews began a movement to reclaim land in the Middle East and create their own country. Israel was created in 1948.
Arabs who had already been living there are in conflict with the Jews because they both claim the land in Israel.
