PatienceA good negotiator is patient. You will makemore mistakes when you are hurried or in ahurry.

Negotiations often involve more than just aone-off meeting, and in some cases it cantake considerable lengths of time to reach

agreement. Sometimes barriers need to bebroken down or trust needs to be builtbefore one or other party is prepared tocommit to a resolution, so it is important not

    to rush things.

    10/13

It is necessary for a good negotiator tobe patient. This is chiefly because anegotiation will be limited if a negotiatorstarts it in too straightforward a way,

which may yield some short-term resultsonly. So to make both negotiator and hisopponent nearer their common goals isbut a time-consuming job. But this will

most probably bring not onlysatisfactions to both sides but alsoachieve long term results.

CalmRemaining calm is a very useful quality inpeople who take part in the negotiationprocess. In particular, when you arepersonally attacked or when you are instressful situations.

They must remain calm and keep a level of

emotional detachment. If the Negotiatorbecomes angry or overly sympathetic, hemight deviate from his game plan and act withhis heart instead of his head.

    Crediable

For any relationship to work there must be a basis oftrust. Negotiations are colored by the natural inclinationof each person involved to trust or distrust the other. This need to trust each other is essential for groups of

    people to function well together.

If one person makes a habit of breaching a confidence, breaking his word or outright lying distrust will causestrife and distrust in the relationships. This distrust, if left

unchecked, will grow into resentment and ultimately ruinthe relationship.

Consider your future when contemplating breaching thetrust with someone you care about. Is the quick victory

really worth the long term impact?

UnemotionalNothing kills creativity quicker than anger, pride, embarrassment, envy, greed, or otherstrong negative emotion. Anger is often anexpression of fear, or lack of confidence inour ability to get want we think we want.Anger is very much self centered. Emotional

outbursts tend to escalate rather than solvea conflict. If we can improve our ability tomanage our emotions and respond withoutgetting defensive, we have gone a long way

    toward creative negotiation.
