Somalia

• Without an effective government since 1991

• One third of the population depends on food aid.

• More than 1 million people are internally

displaced

• Islamist Militia and the UN backed Transitional

Government compete for control of the country.

African Union (AU)

• AU force mandated in January 2007

• Supposed to be 12,000+ strong but only 8,000 troops

• (Revised figures from the UN Security Council now approved)

• Predominantly Soldiers from Uganda and Burundi

• Restricted by the security situation to operations in Mogadishu only.

• AU Force does not have the

mandate to pursue the insurgents.

Piracy

• Long-standing absence of authority has

led to Somali pirates becoming a major

threat to shipping in the area leading

NATO to mount an anti-piracy operation

VBIED Attackon MIA Main Gateat 1430 hours (LT)

on 9 September 2010

Incident:• Two VBIEDs approached AMISOM Controlled Check-Point at MIA entrance• Vehicle occupant wearing TFG Uniforms• Upon reaching CP and being challenged, VBIED#1 exploded• Occupants of VBIED#2 dismounted w/AK47 and attacked the main gate.• As each attacker was shot they exploded (they were wearing suicide vests)• One PBIED attacker got within 100 m of MIA terminal building• Two AMISOM troops KIA• Unconfirmed number of casualties• VBIED#2 – AMISOM in process of detonating• All UN staff accounted for and safe
