300 staff and 4,500 students. We offer a wide
range of courses from undergraduate level through

Faculty’s work is linked to NHS contracts.
Staff engage in a variety of applied research and
consultancy activities, focused in: Biological
and Molecular Sciences, Criminology, Dietetics,
Midwifery, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Operating
Department Practice, Paramedic Science, Physiology
and Pharmacology, Physiotherapy, Psychology,
Social Work, Sport and Exercise Science. The Faculty
research permeates its educational provision.
This Faculty is complemented by an equally strong
profile in pre-registration and post-qualifying
professional courses in health and social care. The
Nursing and Midwifery department has recently
been the subject of a government-funded audit
and has received Quality Assurance Agency (QAA)
judgements. The highest being confidence for
Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedics and ODP courses
and commendable for all courses with one approved
for student progression for Operating Department
Practitioners. There has also been a successful
outcome for provision in Clinical Psychology,
Dietetics, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.
QAA expressed confidence in standards with a
commendable judgement for learning opportunities,
resources and student progression.
Most recently, the Degree in Social Work was placed
in the top fifty courses nationally in the National
Student Satisfaction Survey. This was also one of the
top three social work courses in the country.
Simple and Complex Congenital Heart Disease Management
Aims and summary
The aim of this online module is to explore the scheduled/
unscheduled health care journey of children, young people
and adults with ‘simple’ and ‘complex’ congenital heart
defects. This module builds upon normal anatomy and
physiology of the cardiovascular system from the level
3 module ‘An Introduction to Congenital Cardiothoracic
Care’ and will consider in depth: genetics, embryology, fetal
circulation, aetiology and epidemiology; the impact of the
associated pathophysiology on principles of management.
The module will utilise ‘patient journeys’ and interprofessional
learning styles to enable practitioners to learn with, from and
about other professional groups and the role of multi-agency
support throughout the healthcare journey for this group of
children. Practitioners also have the opportunity to reflect on
their own experiences and share examples of good practice
with peers nationally and internationally.
