PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Congratulations to the 82 children who received their First Holy

Communion last weekend. What a blessing that they can now receive

the Body and Blood of Christ with the rest of their families. It is also a

milestone for the parents as the primary religious educators of their

children. Just before the child’s baptism, the Church addresses the

parents and godparents in this way:

You have come here to present this child for baptism. By water and the Holy Spirit he/she is to

receive the gift of new life from God, who is love. On your part, you must make it your constant care

to bring him/her up in the practice of the faith. See that the divine life which God gives him/her is

kept safe from the poison of sin, to grow always stronger in his/her heart. If your faith makes you

ready to accept this responsibility, renew now the vows of your own baptism. Reject sin; profess

your faith in Christ Jesus. This is the faith of the Church. This is the faith in which this child is about

to be baptized.

As a parish, we are committed to support parents in the faith formation of their children. We do so

through the many ministries we offer for children in preschool through high school. We also offer

programs for adults to continue to grow in their faith.

Of course the single-most important way to foster the growth of faith is through the regular

celebration of the Eucharist on the Lord’s Day. Sunday Mass is indispensable to faith formation. It is

also our primary way of giving witness to what we believe and then being sent to put our faith into

practice.

We all know that children learn a lot by following the example of others. In that sense, we all

participate in the faith formation of others by how we participate in the liturgy. A few practical ways

to give witness include:

• Make Sunday Mass the priority for family activities that day.

• Come a bit early to socialize with other families in the gathering space.

• Participate fully, especially through song. We are singing Christ’s victory story!

• Participate in the whole Mass. Leaving early gives children the message that Christ must not

have been very victorious!

• Socialize with other families in the gathering space after Mass.

• Talk about what the homily meant to you as you drive home.

We are all teachers of our youth in the ways of faith. Let’s do our very best, especially through our

active participation at Sunday Mass, to fulfill our duty to hand on the gift of faith by our witness and

our example.

SJV BOOK DISCUSSION Join us on Monday, May 7 at 1:00pm, as we discuss “Born A Crime: Stories From

a South African Childhood” by Trevor Noah. Trevor was born to a white Swiss

father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five

years in prison. This is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless

young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to

exist. It’s also the story of his loving, fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious

mother: a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and

abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life. For more information or to get a copy of the book, please

contact Judy Benevento: 563-343-0443 or [email protected].

4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER

There is a phrase that has become popular if not overused in the

business world today. It is "thinking outside the box." What this means is to be more

creative, to do away with traditional thinking. It is most often used in the world of

advertising, where companies attempt to come up with new and innovative ways to get

consumers to notice them. Unfortunately, this type of thinking all too often leads to being

outside the boundaries of good taste, as well. Like a shepherd's fence, perhaps the box

was created for a very good reason to begin with!

Today's Gospel reading from John relates Jesus' narrative of being the Good

Shepherd. He states adamantly that he will lay down his life for his flock, but he also says

he will think outside of the box when he says: "I have other sheep that do not belong to

this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock,

one shepherd." The Good Shepherd fights for our very lives against the evils of the world,

so much so that he sacrificed himself so that we might be saved. It is the least we can do to call others who

have strayed from the shepherd's flock.

A traditional shepherd keeps his flock close to him, builds a fence to keep them safe. Should one

stray, he uses his crook to bring it home. The Good Shepherd provides us with the sacrament of penance,

our way of returning to the flock. The priest is the sign and instrument of God's merciful love and forgiveness

for our straying (CCC 1465). On this Fourth Sunday of Easter, we would do well to listen to the Good

Shepherd, who invites us to return the flock.
