Principals Message
With the first day of December upon us (a pinch and a punch), it feels like we are
on the home stretch for the 2015 school year. Is it safe to mention the word
Christmas yet? Although there are only 11 school days left, there are still lots of
things to look forward to. First and foremost will be the Presentation Day
assembly next Tuesday. Parents whose children will be receiving an award should
have received a letter in the mail alerting you to this, but please keep in mind that
all families are invited to attend, regardless of whether your child will be receiving
a special award or not. We are hoping that it will be a great celebration of our
year.
Last week we conducted the elections for our 2016 House Captains. As a result of
the voting, I am very pleased to congratulate and announce that Cardiff South’s
2016 House Captains will be as follows:
Arunta Rachel Hampton and Joseph Calov
Myall Abigail Frith and Cooper Frith
Trawalla Ella Vidler and Edyn Duff
Wallaroi Milli Windred and Jacob Prebendarcik
Finally, today marked the third and final 2016 Kindergarten Orientation visit. The
incoming students got to meet their buddies for next year and did some simple
maths activities and games with them. I’d like to publicly acknowledge the
wonderful job that our Year 5 students did in welcoming and supporting our new
kindergarten students. They were so kind and thoughtful in the way that they
assisted the students and they made us all very proud. A special ‘shout out’ goes
to Larra Wright who managed to coax one upset little girl to join in when I
couldn’t! Awesome job Larra, well done!
Have a great week. David Holland Presentation Day
Next Tuesday 8th December, we will be hosting our annual Presentation Day
assembly. The assembly will start in the hall at 9:30 and conclude at approximately
11:00am. Parents are invited to join us as we celebrate the students’
achievements in 2015. Classroom teachers will be presenting 5 class awards (6 for
composite classes). The awards will include: Academic Achievement, Citizenship,
Most Improved and two others will be Teacher’s Choice. Continued next page..

Volunteers and Helpers Afternoon Tea
In 2015, as in previous years, our school has been very fortunate to have the valued assistance of many parent
helpers and volunteers. To say thank you for your assistance, the staff would like to put on a special afternoon
tea. It will be held at 1:20pm on Thursday 10th December in the school library. Invitations should come home
via the students this week. If you have volunteered or helped in our school this year, in ANY capacity, we would
be delighted if you could join us for this special afternoon tea. We are doing this in the afternoon, so that if
some of you would like to stay for the assembly and the drawing of the P&C’s Christmas raffle you will be able
to. To those of you who have helped or volunteered this year, but are unable to make it– we sincerely thank
you for your kind and generous support. We couldn’t do what we do without you!
Student Christmas Cards
One of the nice traditions here at Cardiff South PS is the way that the students give each other Christmas Cards.
Our method is really simple, each morning a decorated box will be left outside the office near the steps where
we meet for our morning assembly. The students are invited to post the Christmas cards for their friends into
this box. Our school captains, will sort the ‘mail’ and personally deliver the Christmas Cards to each of the
classes later in the day. Our favourite cards are the ones, where the students take the time to write a short but
personal message for their close friends. Merry Christmas!
Student Reports
Semester 2 reports will be sent home in a sealed envelope with the students next Thursday. The students are
told that they are not to open their report card themselves and that it must be handed to their parents first. By
all means share and discuss the report with your child as you deem fit. If you have any questions, after you have
received your child’s report, please speak with their class teacher in the first instance. Families that require
more than one copy of the report, due to shared parenting arrangements can contact the office and we will
send a 2nd copy via mail.
Talent Quest
On the final day of school, Wednesday 16th December the teachers will be hosting our annual
talent quest in the hall. It will start at 9:30 and it is for students and teachers only. Auditions will
be conducted next week during lunch breaks. The talent quest is open to students of all ages.
Items can be anything that showcases ‘talent’, for example, dancing, singing, playing an
instrument, performing magic tricks, telling jokes etc (although we do draw the line at lion
taming!). Performances should be limited to a maximum of 2 minutes and we ask that parents ensure that no
accompanying music contains inappropriate language or content. We look forward to seeing all of the many
talents that exist in Cardiff South on display!
Cardiff High School – 2016 Year 7 Orientation Day
Our Year 6 students are reminded that this Thursday 3rd December is Cardiff High School’s Orientation Day.
Parents and carers are responsible for their child’s safe arrival at Cardiff Hall by 9am. On arrival at Cardiff High,
students are to meet Mr Jardine and Mrs Winterbine for roll call. The morning will commence with an assembly
at 9:15 in the school hall; will be followed by a range of transition activities and will end with a BBQ lunch. The
day will conclude at 1:30pm and all students will walk back to school accompanied by Mr Jardine and Mrs
Winterbine. Year 6 are asked to wear their full school uniform, Year 6 t-shirts are not permitted to be worn for
this event. There is also a parent information session in the evening between 6:00 -7:30pm – we’d encourage all
parents to attend.
K-2 Swimming
Our K-2 swimming program at The Viking Centre has been a real hit with the students this year. Here are just a
few photos to give you an idea of the progress and fun each of them has had during the term.

Uniform Shop – Sale
The uniform shop currently has a limited supply of sports house shirts which are ‘factory seconds’ that will be
offered on sale for $5 each. Unfortunately, because they are factory seconds, they are only available for Myall,
Trawalla and Wallaroi – there were no factory seconds received for Arunta. These will be available on a first in,
best dressed basis. Once they’re sold that’s it. The uniform shop is open for just 2 more Wednesdays this year,
from 8:30-9:30am.
Also, please remember that the P&C’s offer of a $10 discount for families who purchased school jackets before
the price change runs out next Wednesday (9th Dec).
Cardiff South Pubic School Giant Christmas Hamper Raffle 2015 Time is running out for the Christmas Raffle! Please keep selling your tickets to family, friends and work collegues. There is still plenty of space in our Christmas Hampers; if you haven’t already done so and you would like to contribute, please make a donation by sending something in with your child this week. Suggested items include: Christmas food, Christmas decorations, small toys and novelty items. Please send your donations to your child’s classroom. We would love it if each class container could be filled before next Wednesday, 9th December so that it is ready for the raffle on Thursday 10th December, which is going to be drawn in the Hall at 2.45pm.

What’s happening at Cardiff High?
Debating
In Term 2, Cardiff High School began its second year as a participating school in the NSW
Premier’s Debating Challenge. The Challenge requires students to build a case to present for or
against a chosen topic or issue to an audience of peers, teachers and adjudicators. Issues
relating to education, politics, sport, the media and society are addressed during debates,
relying on students’ knowledge of current affairs. This can be a daunting prospect, as students
are only given one hour and limited resources to prepare their case effectively.
Our Year 10 team members – Mitchell Treharne, Abigail Rowley, Aidan Turnbull, Samuel Green
and Emma Skaza – made a positive start to the Challenge in two debates, both against Warners
Bay High School. Whilst losing the first debate of the day on the topic, “That all schools should
have CCTV cameras in areas where students congregate,” they met their second debate, “That
we should ban junk food companies from sponsoring sports,” with resilience and resolve and
achieved a well‐deserved win. A victory by forfeit in the third round placed our Year 10 team in
the top range of zone competitors.
Our Year 7 team consists of newcomers to debating, Joshua Spence, Georgia Hogan, Trinity
Cadette and Ella Guiney. Joshua, Georgia, Trinity and Ella competed against Callaghan College
Wallsend for both the first and second rounds of the Challenge with enthusiasm and energy.
Although they narrowly missed victory in both debates, they met the demands of high school
debating effectively.
Congratulations to all our debating students for their amazing efforts this year!
Our Canteen Online ‘Lunch on Us’ competition
There are several ‘Lunch on Us’ vouchers that have not yet been redeemed. If you have been a successful ‘Lunch
on Us’ winner and have not yet ordered your ‘free lunch’ from the canteen, please do so soon; all vouchers will
