MXC STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN STATEWIDE ‘BE A HERO’ DONOR CAMPAIGN

Malcolm X College recently held a kick-off event to officially announce its participation in the Be A Hero Campaign

sponsored by Secretary of State Jesse White to increase awareness of Organ and Tissue donation (photos above). Secretary White was on hand to show his support for MXC’s campaign launch. “We often think of a hero as someone who wears capes, plays sports or rescues others from burning buildings,” said White. “But we can all be heroes by joining the Secretary of State’s Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. It takes very little time and one donor can save or greatly improve up to 25 lives. The men and women who sign up for this lifesaving program are heroes, too.” The Be A Hero Campaign offers students the opportunity to create their own campaigns and earn community service hours while promoting the Organ/Tissue Donor Registry. The students with the top campaigns will receive internships with Donate Life Illinois partners. Students participating in the MXC campaign include: Robert Moses, Kimberly Neil, Vince Williams, Sean Hunter, and Durell Hill. Additionally, numerous student volunteers have signed up to assist in making MXC’s campaign a success. “We are extremely proud to be a part of this statewide campaign,” said Director of Student Activities Tasia Tigue, who is also MXC’s Be A Hero Administrator. “During the kick-off event, we were able to get 46 people to sign up and hope to continue gaining additional support over the next few weeks.” Additionally, our own Alanna Witherspoon, Executive Office Manager and Assistant to President Munroe shared her inspirational story of being an organ donor for her mother and how that experience changed both of their lives. For more information about the Organ and Tissue Registry, please contact Tasia Tigue at [email protected].

Student Photos Above: Far Left—Saviour Karlo created a poster about lead and its effect on public health (he included information in both English and Spanish); Center—Lilia Diaz and Michael Fontillas created a poster on carbon monoxide and carbon tetrachloride (these pollutants are covalent compounds of carbon that have significant effects on the environment and public health; Far Right—Lauren Maitland created a poster inspired by mercury and the effects of this toxic heavy metal.
