Principals Column Year 12 High Achievers 2016
It was with great pleasure that we welcomed back students
from our 2016 Year 12 cohort who achieved Band 6 results
in their HSC exams. These high achieving young women and
men were acknowledged before a whole school assembly,
followed by a morning tea to which their families were also
invited. It is my sincere hope that all of our current students
will use their example as a source of motivation for their own
studies.
Many thanks to Mrs Wiggins for her organisation or the day.
Also, my sincere congratulations to all of our returning
students, who achieved one or more Band 6 results across
their subjects. Special congratulations are extended to Chloe
Angel who was acknowledged as our School Dux for 2016,
having achieved the highest ATAR (Australian Tertiary
Admissions Rank).
Safety on Oxford Street
The new school year probably isn’t that “new” any more, with
most students and families well back into their working day
routines. Most parents and carers will be aware that I am out
the front of the school most mornings, where I am happy to
chat with members of our school community.
I can’t help but notice, however, that some students are
being “dropped off” in the middle of the road, which can
quickly cause significant congestion. The best option is to
allow your student to travel by bus to school or, when this is
not possible, ensure the manner in which you drop your
student off, given the constraints of a busy cul de sac, is both
safe and legal.
Staff Development Days
The Department of Education official calendar has gazetted
the final two days of the school year Monday 18 December
and Tuesday 19 December 2017 as student free staff
development days. As was the case last year, our staff have
voted to attend a series of four staff development evenings,
held after school hours during the year, in lieu of these last
two days. There are significant benefits to this change to our
calendar, not the least of which is being able to access
professional learning time during the school year, when it is
most needed.
Consequently, Kingscliff High School will be closed, with no
one on site, on Monday 18 December and Tuesday 19
December this year. Again, families should note that both of
these days were always designated as student free days.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Our focus for this week is the shared responsibility we all
have for the care and cleanliness of our toilet facilities. I
would ask all students to take this opportunity to reflect on
their responsibility to themselves and their peers to ensure
our toilets are kept in clean and usable condition.
Let’s work together in order to avoid unnecessary toilet
closures.
Study Skills
Our focus on building student capacity to achieve academic
success is gaining momentum this term – all students have
been issued with wall planners to help them keep track of
assessment deadlines. In particular, all Year 8 students
have been trained in the use of their wall planners and
diaries during last week’s Kingscliff Way lessons.
Next week, Mr Bassingthwaighte has coordinated
workshops being delivered by Elevate Education, with
mentoring sessions to follow for Years 7, 9 and 11 as we
work our way into Semester One assessment across all
curriculum areas. Many thanks to Mr Bassingthwaighte and
the Study Skills team.
Take a Stand Together Day
On Friday 17 March, our school will host the “Take a Stand
Together Day” in support of the National Day of Action
Against Bullying and Violence. Our intention will be to
support students in standing with us to “call out” bullying at
our school. This will follow last Friday’s presentation of
“Verbal Combat”, a dramatic production for Year 8
confronting the issues of bullying and cyber safety.
During our “Take A Stand Together Day” we will be working
in particular with Years 7 and 8 through a series of
workshops and additional dramatic productions, developing
the “CARE” paradigm which addresses:
Cyber bullying and the harm it causes within and
beyond school
Action that we all can take against bullying
Resilience and sources of support available for all of
our school community
Empathy and understanding for those impacted by
unacceptable behaviours
I am looking forward to the 17 March as an opportunity for
our learning community to present itself at its very best.
Wishing all of the Kingscliff High School community a great
week.

Non-Attendance Interview Program
The Department of Education’s Home School Liaison Team
will be conducting interviews at Kingscliff High School - Week
2 Term 2.
If your child’s attendance rate is less than 85% they will be
interviewed by the Home School Liaison Officer. If there are
attendance concerns, you will be required to attend a school
based interview to discuss your child’s attendance. Please
refer to the Information for parents - Compulsory School
Attendance.
Incentive for General Contributions and Elective Fee
payment
We would like to reward the students of these families, along
with any other student whose contributions and elective fees
are paid in full by the end of Term 2. All of these students will
go into a draw for an electronic device, approved by the
Department of Education and Communities under its “Bring
Your Own Device” initiative to the value of up to $700. The
winning student, announced at the beginning of Term 3, will
be able to purchase an electronic device of their choice that
meets our BYOD recommendations from the retailer of their
choice. Our BYOD recommendations are available on our
website. Once they have submitted the receipt to Ms Bayliss,
our School Administration Manager, they will be reimbursed
by the school for the value of the approved device or up to
$700 of the total price.
We hope to not only collect as many “school fee”
contributions as possible to further support teaching and
learning at our school, but also encourage a key aspect of
“21st Century learning”.
Fees are payable online, over the phone, mail or cash. They
can be paid in instalments. Elective fees must be paid by
Week 6. Invoices for fees will be issued shortly by mail and
prompt payment is appreciated.
Phoning Home At times we need to contact parents or carers due to your
child being sick. Please note that our telephone number is a
private number so if you have a missed call from a private
number it could be the school trying to contact you. Please
ensure we have your most updated contact details.
Uniform Shop
The Kingscliff High School Uniform Shop is open every
Monday 1.30pm to 3.30pm and every Wednesday and
Friday 8.30am to 11.30am.
Aprons, calculators and art books are available for purchase
from the front office.

On Stage and Call Back
On Thursday 9 and Friday 10 February thirteen Kingscliff
High School Drama and Dance students travelled to Sydney
to experience the magic of OnStage and Callback. OnStage
and Callback are annual showcases of student excellence in
Drama and Dance for the previous 2016 cohort.
Travelling by plane down to Sydney, students from Kingscliff
High School participated in professional workshops in Dance
and Drama, viewed archival footage of theatrical
performances and were audience members in the biggest
showcase of student achievement in the HSC. By viewing
outstanding Drama and Dance performances, students now
have a deeper understanding of the performance
requirements for their respective subjects.
While there was a delay when flights returning on Friday were
cancelled by Jetstar, students made up for the
inconvenience by staying in the heart of Chinatown. They
saw a Chinese New Year street celebration, ate to their
hearts content with a Chinese banquet and sung to their
hearts content with Karaoke. Students visited the
Powerhouse Museum, with a special exhibition on 3D
printing and then finally caught a plane home after a jam
packed three days.
Bring on OnStage and Callback 2018!
SWIMMING CARNIVAL REPORT 2017
Kingscliff High School held its annual Swimming Carnival on Friday 10 February 2017 at the Oasis Pools, Banora Point Swimming
Complex.
The student attendance numbers were slightly lower than in previous years, but the level of participation was outstanding with
almost all events requiring multiple heats.
Students must realise that carnivals are a very important part of the school curriculum and that attendance is compulsory.
Absenteeism on this day will require students to provide a valid reason.
Congratulations to the individual winners as well as all students who participated in the events. Two of the outstanding features
of the carnival this year was the depth of competition in all the age groups and the number of long standing records, which were
broken during the day.
Thanks to our seniors, as they conducted their fund raising activities and actively encouraged junior students to compete.
The house captains received great praise from their teachers for the level of involvement that they displayed throughout the day
especially when it came to organising the relay teams which are worth double points.
Congratulations to the following students on being named age champions.
Age Champions
Boy Girl
12yrs Dakoda Leslie Tahlia Evans
13yrs Quinn McCarthy Lily O’ Sullivan
14yrs Nathaniel Badger Breanna Raymond
15yrs Jack Craig Mia Taylor
16yrs Ethan Maxted Aimee Pfeffer
17+yrs Rory Matthews Evee Thuys
In the house competition the Sea Eagles were the winners with 775 points followed by Dolphins on 542, Sharks on 441 and
Pelicans finished on 428
This was a great effort by Sea Eagles under the leadership of Mr Ella and his house captains. It came down to the Sea Eagles
having a strong team of girls, who double the nearest teams points, the Dolphins had a strong team of boys. The participation
was high in all houses with the Sharks leading the way from Sea Eagles, Pelican then Dolphins.
On Monday 20 February 2017 at Mullumbimby Pool a team of 70 students will be representing Kingscliff High School and we are
expecting this team to perform with a great deal of success and once again taking away the mantle as the champion swimming
school in the zone. We wish all our swimmers the best of luck at this meet.
Thanks to the management and staff of the Banora Point Pool complex for their professional assistance throughout the day.
Thanks also to the many parents of our students who attended on this day. It was great to see so many enthusiastic parents
involve themselves in supporting their students. If we can continue a whole school approach to the carnival the future of carnivals
at Kingscliff High School are assured.
NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM 2017
Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical
Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.
In 2017 the following vaccines will be offered to Year 7 students*:
dTpa
vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (whooping cough)) as a single dose
varicella vaccine (chickenpox) as a single dose; and
human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0, 2 and 6 months
Parent Information Kits that include an Information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent home to parents /
guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents / guardians are advised to:
read all the information provided
complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive
return the completed consent form to their child’s school
ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.
Please note that students who commence HPV vaccination in school clinics in Year 7 but do not complete the course during the
school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8. Parents will be notified by letter from The Public Health Unit if
this applies to their child.
Students who have any HPV doses at their GP will be advised to complete the course with their GP.
Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning
the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at:
www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation
To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses throughout the year where
possible.
A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure that this
record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record
of Vaccination.
