Rabbi Ben-Zion Lanxner

It’s Tuesday morning, as I am writing this article, I am not yet totally sure if I was still dreaming or if it was for real? Last week-end wasn’t what one would call “a regular week-end” to say the least. It was something one had to experience first-hand here at our Shul, to have felt and witnessed the magic! A very special thank you goes out to the leadership of our Jewish Federation of Waco (C.A.J. members Judy Hersh, Dianne & Brent DeMoville, Susan & Abbye Silver), for making this (perhaps once in a lifetime event), to become a reality. This wonderful Jewish Bluegrass Band, “Nefesh Mountain”, literally hypnotized our Waco Jewish community with their delightful original melodies and stirring lyrics. They spoiled us all weekend long.

They co-led our Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday evening, followed by a stage performance at “Common Grounds” on Saturday night, and finished up on Sunday morning with an educational tour of Jewish Bluegrass music. Also, they shared how the group and their unique sound “came to be. “ Everyone in attendance, to any one, or to all, of these programs, received a jolt of joyfulness and an undeniable infusion of spirituality. Please allow me to further describe this memorable weekend, in more detail. The Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service was one that caught us all by surprise. Being that at the time, many of us were not “yet “familiar with their music. Wow, what we received and heard is (almost) indescribable. It was so

stirringly beautiful and uplifting. The deep, well-thought out lyrics (English & Hebrew) to each of their original songs told a heart-felt story. Using their own “real-life” experiences, both the good and the bad, this dynamic husband & wife duo, Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg, had truly captured the SOUL of JUDAISM in each of their original compositions. Many of us were totally caught off guard as each beautiful song, warmed our hearts and brought-up raw emotions within each of us, causing tears to well-up in everyone’s eyes. We were ALL so emotional, that some of us, without mentioning names, could not stop weeping. One song especially grabbed a strong-hold onto each of our hearts. Doni, the main singer, openly shared a personal story of a very difficult time in her life when she felt helpless and heart-broken. She had gone out to the backyard to look up at the night sky and pleaded from her “Nefesh “(soul) for G-d “to hear her!” At the time, she never imagined that she would later take this painful experience and put it into song. But she did. Doni’s personal story, later led her to compose a beautiful song titled “Ado-nai”. During a section of the song, Doni stopped using her own words and instead asked the audience to “fill-in the blank,” so that we could make our own special request to G-d. Everyone’s intense emotions were palpable. It was an unforgettable experience which everyone truly enjoyed and will forever cherish. As I have always said, there are no coincidences in Judaism. Nefesh Mountain was proof again of this. In last week’s Torah portion, G-d is commanding Moses to make sure “To keep the fire on the Altar, always burning”, not to let it die out. This is exactly what Nefesh Mountain did for ALL OF US!

They most assuredly did succeed at keeping OUR FIRE BURNING! While some of us may

have had only a small flame burning before we had met them, this sensational musical group has indeed rekindled our spark of holiness “pinteleh yid“ in our heart and soul!

At the Saturday evening concert, the group played songs expressing their intense love for G-d, for nature and for Judaism. As the main singer Doni danced and expressed herself freely, one could readily see how her own soul soared higher and higher up to the mountain tops, bringing her closer to G-d. I too, had the awesome opportunity and pleasure to sing with the group up on stage.

A side note: Many of you are already aware, from my personal biography, that I was the greatest fan to my mentor Reb Shlomo Carlebach zt”l. I had even had a couple of wonderful opportunities to sing up on stage with him. A popular phrase he would shout out was “Higher, Higher, bring the fire Higher”. Together we sang our hearts out and encouraged the audience to join us and to sing along with all of their “Neshama”, with all their soul.

Reb Shlomo has a musically talented daughter named “Neshamah”. So perhaps it is another one of those coincidences (I think not), that Doni just happens to be best-friends with Neshamah!

This magical weekend, our own inner fire went up higher and higher! It was “Basheret”. It was definitely a decision made in the heaven for all of us to connect in this special way. This special week-end was so re-invigorating! I only wished our ENTIRE Waco Jewish Community would have been there to participate and to enjoy and “Shep Nachass”!

With special thanks again to this dynamic duo Doni (the singer) and Eric (who played both the guitar and banjo), and their very talented Nefesh Mountain musicians David Goldenberg on mandolin, Alan on the fiddle and Tim on the bass.

46,060 Central Texans do not know where their next

meal will come from and over 30% of people in Waco

live in poverty. Hunger is all around us with devastating

consequences. For over 51 years, Caritas of Waco along

with countless donors and volunteers have worked hard to combat the

hunger and poverty crisis in our community. Caritas serves 7 counties with

their case management programs, each designed to work with individuals and

families to be lifted out of the grip of poverty.

If you are looking to perform a great mitzvah,

here are two ways to do so!

Please bring non-perishable food items such as cereal, pasta, and

canned goods to the Shul office to help us fill our basket for a

donation to help those in need. The basket is located on the table

under the glass display case of beautiful Judaica items.

We will deliver the collected food to Caritas of Waco on May 1st.

Your participation is greatly appreciated!

The 2019 Feast of Caring Soup Cook-Off will be held Tuesday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m. in the

Brazos Room of the Waco Convention Center. Information is available at www.caritas-

waco.org or by calling 254-753-4593.

“Ma’ot Chitim” Just as it is traditional to welcome the poor to our Seders when we say the “ha lachma anya – this bread of the poor,” it is traditional to donate money so that those who are less fortunate are able

to celebrate the Passover with holiday foods. If you would like to participate in this tradition, please make donations to the Rabbi and designate them for Ma’ot Chitim, and these funds will specifically

provide for those less fortunate to attend the Seder.

YOM HASHOAH YELLOW CANDLES AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

$5.00 EACH

History of the Yellow Candle

Over seventy years ago, half of the earth's Jewish population perished at the hands of another Amalek, an Austrian

house painter who seized control of Europe and threw the earth into darkness. God's light unto the other nations

flickered but did not die. A new, modern Exodus arose from the depths of despair and tragedy. From the ashes of

Europe, survivors of the Holocaust, or Shoah, made their way towards new lives. Emigrants dispersed around the

world, to the new State of Israel and to the western hemisphere. In these places, they began to rebuild shattered

lives. In the following decades, survivors asked another question. How could Yahrzeits be observed for those

victims whose entire families had been wiped out? An idea was born, a special memorial candle with yellow wax, in

remembrance of the yellow stars forced upon European Jews in the 1930s.

The Yellow Candle™ was created in 1981 by FJMC clubs in Canada, New England and elsewhere to keep alive the

memory of the Six Million who perished in the Shoah. The Candle is modeled after a traditional Jewish memorial

Yahrzeit candle that burns for 24 hours during periods of mourning and on the Yahrzeit anniversary of a family

member. The candle's yellow wax serves to remind us of the yellow arm band which Jews were forced to wear

during the Nazi regime. A photo on the candle container shows young people visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau

concentration camp. This reflects the importance of teaching our youth the lessons of the Holocaust and of

remembering the Six Million. In addition, the program logo is a yellow Magen David (Star of David) outlined with

barbed wire, with the word "Jude" in the middle. This preserves the memory of the armband or cloth patch that Jews

were forced to wear in the ghettos of Eastern Europe.

Never Forget! Zachor!

SELLING OF CHAMETZ 2019

Congregation Agudath Jacob

As Passover quickly approaches, there are many preparations that are incumbent upon

us, chief among them is the selling of Chametz. In addition to the prohibition of eating

Chametz (leaven) on Passover, we are also not allowed to own or benefit from Chametz. The

Torah and Rabbinic Law requires us to rid our homes (and also our business locations) of all

leaven and leaven products. To accomplish this, we isolate all existing Chametz in secured

cabinets and pantries and seal them, and sell this leaven to a non-Jew prior to Passover.

In order to accommodate you, we have prepared a Power of Attorney for the sale of

Chametz form for you to fill out, sign, and return to us. This means that you designate Rabbi

Ben-Zion Lanxner to be your agent for the transaction.

It is customary to make a donation to the Rabbi or to the Rabbi’s Discretionary

Fund for this transaction. Should you have any questions you can contact him at

[email protected]

KNOW YE that I………………………………, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Ben-Zion

Lanxner to act in my place and stead, and in my behalf to sell all Chametz (leaven) possessed

by me (knowingly and unknowingly) as defined by the Torah and Rabbinic Law (e.g. Chametz,

doubt of Chametz and all kinds of Chametz mixtures). Also, Chametz that tends to harden and

to adhere to the inside surface of pots, pans, or cooking and unusable utensils, and all kinds of

live animals that have been eating Chametz or mixtures thereof. And to lease all places

Pesach Preparations: Most commonly asked questions…

Q. What is the Siyum Habechorim? A. On the day before Passover, the first born of our people fast to commemorate their being spared the fate of the first-born Egyptians. But one may eat if he is participating in the Seudat Mitzvah, the festive meal which accompanies the performance of certain mitzvot. One such mitzvah is Talmud Torah study. Thus, when a person completes a significant section of material (e.g., a tractate of Talmud) it is customary for all present to join in a Siyum, a ceremony of completion with a meal. Any firstborn who participates in the ceremony may eat. This is known as the Siyum Habechorim. Q. Why must we clean our houses so thoroughly before Pesach? A. On Pesach, we are not allowed to eat, derive benefit from, or possess Chametz. All Chametz must be removed from our homes before Pesach. To facilitate this cleaning, the following rituals are part of Pesach preparations. (The text for the ceremonies can be found in many Haggadot) Bedikat Chametz: After the house has been cleaned, on the night before Pesach, we search once again for any crumbs of chametz we may have missed. We use a candle, a feather and wooden spoon. This symbolizes that all the chametz which we could see was removed. The ceremony of Bedikat Hametz is recited this year on Thursday, April 18 after sundown. (7:29 p.m.) Bi’ur Chametz: On the morning before Pesach, we burn the chametz that has been found during the search of the previous night. This ceremony should take place by 12:00 noon on Friday, April 19, though Chametz should not be eaten after 11:26 a.m. It is also customary not to eat matzah at all on Friday until the Seder. Mechirat Chametz: We are not always able to destroy or remove all our chametz. Doing so could be economically disastrous. So, the rabbis ordained that a symbolic sale is made of all the chametz to a non-Jew in the community, who then sells it back to us after Pesach. The chametz is no longer “in our possession.” This is normally done by the rabbi for the entire congregation. Incidentally, it is only necessary to sell or destroy food stuffs; dishes and utensils are simply locked away in storage for the duration of the festival. Use the form in the newsletter to participate in this mitzvah. Q. What is chametz? A. If one of the five grains: wheat, oats, rye, barley, or spelt – comes in contact with water after it’s harvested, it becomes fermented or chametz. This fermentation takes 18 minutes, according to tradition. Pesadik baked goods are make from flour which has not been fermented. The term chametz is also applied to dishes and utensils which have been in contact with chametz foods during the year. Q. Why do most Ashkenazim not eat beans, rice, corn or peas on Pesach? A. Although these are not among the five species of grain that can become chametz, the rabbis forbade their use because, in the past, flour was made from them. They felt that people might become confused and be tempted to use regular flour if they were allowed to use flour made from those plants. To avoid possible confusion, most Ashkenazic rabbis ordained that these not be used at all. The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has ruled unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible, as peanuts are not actually legumes. Some Ashkenazic authorities permit, including while many conservative others forbid, the use of legumes in a form other than their natural state, for example, corn sweeteners, corn oil, or soy oil. Sephardic authorities permit the use of all of the above. Q. What foods may not be used during Pesach? A. All these foods are considered Chametz and may not be used during Pesach: leavened bread, cakes, biscuits, crackers, cereals, wheat, barley, oats, rye, spelt, rice, peas, dry beans and liquids which contain ingredients made from grain alcohol. Q. What foods require Rabbinic supervision for Pesach? A. Any prepared food must be certified Kosher for Passover: Matzah, noodles, candies, cakes, beverages, canned and processed foods, processed cheeses, jam, jelly, relishes, wines, liquors, salad oils, vegetable gelatin, shortening, vinegar. A “Kosher for Pesach” label or tag without product name and Rabbinic signature is unreliable. This applies to products made in America, Europe or Israel. Q. Are there foods which require no certification? A. The following products require NO CERTIFICATION if purchased and unopened BEFORE Pesach begins: Pure natural unflavored coffee (ground or instant), sugar (not confectioners or powdered), pure brown sugar, saccharin, tea, salt, pepper, natural spices, milk, frozen vegetables when packed without additives, frozen fruit juices with no additives, vegetables (string beans are permitted) dried fruit, honey, Hershey’s® cocoa, 100% pure safflower, coconut or cottonseed

Page 13: Congregation Agudath Jacob...Congregation Agudath Jacob April Adar II/Nissan 5779 Rabbi: Ben-Zion Lanxner President: Susan Silver Phone: 254-772-1451 Office Admin: Karen Eason Fax:

oil, nuts (except legumes) baking soda (NOT baking powder), detergents and scouring powders. All these items should be left unopened until Pesach begins. The following require NO PASSOVER CERTIFICATION if purchased BEFORE or DURING Pesach: Fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, fresh fish and kosher fresh meat. Q. Can any dishes or utensils used during the year be used on Pesach? A. It is preferable to have dishes and utensils specifically reserved for Pesach and stored away during the rest of the year. However, since this is not always possible, the rabbis ordained that certain types of utensils may be “kashered,” specifically prepared for Pesach. However, earthenware, enamelware or porcelain utensils, if used during the year, may not be used during Pesach.

Kashering of Utensils The process of kashering utensils depends on how the utensils are used. According to halakhah, leaven can be purged from a utensil by the same process in which it was absorbed in the utensil (keole’o kakh poleto). Therefore, utensils used in cooking are kashered by boiling, those used in broiling are kashered by fire and heat; and those used only for cold food are kashered by rinsing. Please direct any questions to your rabbi, who is available to assist you in Passover preparation. Earthenware China, pottery, etc. may not be kashered. However, fine translucent china which has not been used in over a year may be used if scoured and cleaned in hot water.

Metal Utensils wholly made of metal (including handles) – used in fire (spit, broiler) must be thoroughly scrubbed and cleansed and then made as hot as possible. Those used for cooking or eating (silverware, pots) must be completely immersed in boiling water. Pots should have water boiled in them which will overflow the rim. The utensils should not be used for a period of at least 24 hours between the cleaning and the immersion in boiling water. Metal baking utensils cannot be kashered.

Oven and Ranges Every part that comes in contact with food must be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned. Then, the oven and range should be heated as hot as possible for a half hour. If there is a broil setting, use it. Self-cleaning ovens must be kashered in the same manner as regular ovens. A microwave oven, which does not cook the food by means of heat, should be cleaned, then a cup of water be placed in it. Then the oven should be turned on until the water disappears. A microwave that has a browning element cannot be kashered for Pesach.

Dishwasher Some authorities permit the use of dishwashers during Passover after not using the machine for a period of 24 hours, and running two full cycles with detergent. Others recommend not using a dishwasher at all during the festival. Glassware Authorities disagree as to the method for kashering drinking utensils. One opinion requires soaking in water for three days, changing the water every 24 hours. The other opinion requires only a thorough scrubbing before Pesach, or putting it through a dishwasher. Electric Appliances If the parts that come into contact with Chametz are removable, they can be kashered in the appropriate way (if metal, follow the rules for metal utensils). If the parts are not removable the appliance cannot be kashered. (All exposed parts should be thoroughly cleaned). Table, Closets and Counters If used with chametz, they should be thoroughly cleaned and covered, and then they may be used. Kitchen Sink A metal sink can be kashered by a thorough cleaning and by pouring boiling water over it. A porcelain sink should be cleaned and a sink rack used. If, however, dishes are to be soaked in a porcelain sink, a dish basin must be used. Chametz and Non-Passover Utensils Non-Passover dishes, pots, and chametz whose ownership has been transferred, should be separated, locked up or covered, and marked so as to prevent accidental use. How may a refrigerator be kashered? Remove all chametz food and opened packages. Clean thoroughly with hot water and baking soda and scour the racks. In a freezer, frozen chametz foods should be put in a sealed box and should be sold with other chametz.

HOW TO OBSERVE THE YAHRZEIT

It is traditional to kindle a Yahrzeit Candle in the home on the evening Yahrzeit begins. It should remain lighted

until sunset the next day. Possible prayer before lighting a Yahrzeit candle: Eternal God, I/we light this candle

in memory of (name) _________, my/our beloved (relationship) ___________. The light of the flame rekindles

all the warm memories of the moment we shared together and reassures me /us that a piece of his/her soul

dwells in my/our heart(s) forever. May his/her soul be bound up with the bonds of eternal life. Amen. Candles

are available at the Gift Shop. Every effort should be made to say Kaddish at congregational services. It is

meritorious to perform some Mitzvah or to contribute to the synagogue in commemoration of the deceased.
