ONE YEAR AGO, IN JANUARY, 2018, I wrote my Rabbi’s message about the Outreach Project, a brand new social action initiative to feed the hungry. In it, I reminded our community that by participating in the Outreach Project, they would be performing the mitzvah of leaving the corners of our fields for the poor. The Torah recognized that in an agrarian society, where most families harvested their food as subsistence farmers, there would always be families who would

need other people’s corners to survive. Indeed, in the days before “Stop and Shop,” or even before the emergence of a community’s general store, our food was almost entirely dependent on the fecundity of our land. Under these circumstances, the command to leave the corners of our field for the poor enabled even those without land to harvest food for themselves. Our rabbis taught that this command was not dependent on whether it was a good harvest, or whether there was enough food to feed one’s own family. Leaving the corners of the field for the poor was not optional because it not only guaranteed food for the poor, but also taught us that tzedakah was something we did regardless of our own economic status. Whether you owned one hundred acres or only two, the command to leave the corners of your field was still the same; the command of tzedakah applied to all equally. Last April we heard the voice of Torah and provided thousands of “corners” to those who needed them. During the winter and spring, our religious school students and TBE families made donations to fund the Outreach Project. Then, on Sunday morning, April 29th, we gathered in the Silverstein Meeting Hall, ready to feed the hungry. Every generation - from the “greatest” to the baby boomers, from Generation X to the Millenials, from our professional staff and faculty to every class in our religious school – put on protective gloves and an “attractive” hair bonnet to make thousands of meals! It was a team effort. We had pourers and shakers, baggers and boxers,

shleppers and sitters, all working together to feed the hungry in Rhode Island. And while we made and packed our meals, there were representatives from End Hunger New England who spoke with us about food insecurity in Rhode Island, and what a difference we were making with both our donations and the work of our hands.Indeed, anyone who participated in, or witnessed, last year’s Outreach Project, would certainly agree that it was nothing short of a miracle. Each nutritious meal – ready for boiling – costs only 25 cents. With a bargain like this, for our first year we had hoped to raise $5,000 in order to provide 20,000 meals. But, thanks to your generosity, we blew by that goal, raising more than $7,500 and making more than 30,000 meals. This year, let’s not be content with 30,000 meals. If you have a child (or children) who participated in last year’s Outreach Project, then we hope you will make a donation toward this year’s program. If you participated in last year’s program, and know how meaningful it was (and how much fun you had), we hope you will contribute even more this year. Remember, every $25 donation enables us to pack 100 meals. And if you are so moved, don’t stop at $25. For every dollar we raise, we will be packing four more meals! In addition, all of the money collected for tzedakah in the winter and spring of religious school will be donated to Outreach. Please join us on Sunday morning, April 28th for the packing of the meals. Join our students, age three to eighteen, in the mitzvah of tzedakah. Join our parents, in the mitzvah of feeding the hungry. And join our clergy, staff, and teachers, in the mitzvah of gemilut chasidim, acts of loving kindness. This is a mitzvah of generosity (heart) and labor (hands). It promises to be a day of both learning and sustenance. We’ll see you there.

WORSHIP

ROSH HODESH SHEVAT Rosh Hodesh Shevat is Monday, January 7th.

Shevat is the month when the very first trees

in the State of Israel begin to bud and bloom;

a reminder of the rebirth and beauty of the

land, and our responsibility as God’s partners

to care for and appreciate it. The holiday of

Tu B’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat (when the

moon is full) reminds us of this sacred

obligation and gives us the opportunity to

plant seeds and trees that will grow here and

in Israel.

ROSH HODESH ADAR IRosh Hodesh Adar is Wednesday, February

6th. Look for the new moon Tuesday night.

In Adar we celebrate Purim, a time when

storytelling, costumes, sweet treats, special

drinks and general frivolity help reveal the

blessings hidden in the world around us. Our

tradition teaches, “when the month of Adar

begins, we increase our joy.” This new month

is an opportunity to uncover and increase the

blessings of hope and happiness, love and

laughter in our lives and in the world through

our words and actions.

TU B’SHEVAT BRAUDE LIBRARY NEWSTrees and Judaism

TU B’SHEVAT, once a very minor observance, has become a more important celebration in the Jewish calendar. Today, the holiday is celebrated with its own seder, the most positive expression of celebration in the Jewish lexicon.

Tu B’Shevat literally means the fifteenth day of Shevat. It is not mentioned in the Torah, yet where the Talmud describes it as “the new year of the trees,” it mandates no rituals, no blessings and no synagogue observance.

Historically, Tu B’Shevat was a way of maintaining a connection with the land of Israel - a hot, arid place where trees are the essence of life, providing food, shade and water. In Israel, during the month of Shevat, the winter rains end and the first signs of spring appear, renewing the trees. The only observance of Tu B’Shevat among Askenazi Jews was the eating of fruits, especially those grown in Israel.Beginning in the 1970s, American Jews rediscovered the Tu B’Shevat seder, which originated in the 16th century. Modeled after the Pesach seder, it featured four cups of wine and much eating of fruit, along with singing and praying.

The modern focus for Tu B’Shevat has broadened to include the relationships between people and the natural world. In Jewish tradition the primary symbol of this relationship is the tree. The Torah itself is called a tree of life and the rollers around which the scrolls are wrapped are also called trees of life, atzei hayim.

The planting of trees was seen as a holy activity. According to Rabbi Yohonan ben Zakkai, if you are holding a seedling in your hand and someone says “Look, here comes the Messiah!” you should first plant the seedling, then go see the Messiah. The Torah forbids the cutting down of an enemy’s fruit trees in times of war, even if trees are needed to siege a city.

The ancient Jewish reverence of trees combined with the modern concern for our world’s forests and other natural resources gives us new opportunities for the observance of Tu B’Shevat.

CALLING ALL RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE VOLUNTEERS!For the past few years, members of Sisterhood and Brotherhood have come together for our annual Make-A-Meal mitzvah at Ronald McDonald House. This year on February 10th, a small group of us will again gather at the house at 2:00pm to make an evening meal for the families staying there. This house helps lift a burden off parents’ shoulders by allowing them to spend quality time with their hospitalized children and not to worry about preparing meals. Returning to the house and a home-cooked meal, perhaps after a stressful day, lets these families know that others care, and they truly appreciate what the house and volunteers offer.I’m hoping four or five volunteers will join me from 2:00-5:30pm as we prepare and cook that night’s dinner. If interested, please get in touch with Elinor Nacheman at (401) 726-1449.

SISTERHOODInspiring Stories for Young Readers

THE START OF EACH CALENDAR YEAR brings resolutions and hopeful promises of change and renewal. This year, in response to the tragedy at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh and to rising anti-Semitism elsewhere, the Association of Jewish Libraries offers book lists for young readers that feature inspiring stories of brotherhood and sisterhood: Jews and non-Jews standing up for each other, working out differences, and confronting prejudice.

Here are some selections:

Refugee by Alan Gratz

Three kids- a Jewish boy in Nazi Germany, a Cuban girl in 1994, and a Syrian boy in 2015- go on harrowing journeys in search of refuge. Action-packed, their stories turn on timeless topics of hope, courage, and survival.

Lauren Yanofsky Hates the Holocaust by Leanne Lieberman

Lauren is sick of Jewish Holocaust memorials. But when she see some of her friends, including a cute boy she likes, playing Nazi war games, she is faced with a terrible choice: betray her friends or betray her heritage.

The Inquisitor’s Tale, Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog by Adam Gidwitz

Set in France, in 1242, three children- a Christian peasant girl, a Moorish boy raised as a monk, and a Jewish boy- are on the run to escape prejudice and persecution and to save a Talmud from being burned. The non-Jewish children are motivated and inspired by their Jewish friend.

These titles and many others on the Association of Jewish Libraries’ list await young readers in our splendid Braude Library. Stop in on Sundays when our RLYG Religious School is in session, and have a look. I’ll gladly help you find them and check them out.

Joanna Katsune, Librarian.

Temple Beth-El is thrilled to host the NFTY Northeast Spring Conclavette

March 29-31, 2019!This is a large undertaking and

we need all hands on deck! Please consider hosting in your home!

Here’s what that means…

Our teens, with the support of leadership from the NFTY Northeast region, will plan a weekend of programs, worship services and fun.

Approximately 275 teens in Grades 8-12 and 45 youth professionals from across New England will participate in the event.

We need volunteers to host teens in your homes and get them to and from the Temple throughout the weekend.

Parents: Margaret and Ryan Lax

School: Immaculate Conception Catholic Regional School, 7th Grade

Favorite Activities: Basketball, football, watching sports, playing with

brothers

To Noah, becoming Bar Mitzvah means becoming a more mature man

with increased responsibilities. For his Mitzvah Mania project, Noah is

donating time and talent to the Scituate Recreation League, helping

younger kids (including his 7-year-old twin brothers) improve their

basketball skills. In the future, Noah would like to be a successful

businessman, just like his dad, and also be his brothers’ NBA agent!
