Cádiz

The province of Cadiz is an enchanting triangle of land situatedin southern Spain; the place where a small strait joins the Medi-terranean and the Atlantic, or, in other words, where the Costadel Sol meets the Costa de la Luz. A meeting point steeped inlegend, covering just 14 km and two shores: Europe on one sideand Africa on the other.

Its capital, Cadiz, is the oldest city in the West, while the pro-vince is the birthplace of symbols for which Spain is famousaround the world: flamenco, the Andalusian horse (the horse ofchoice for kings and queens across Europe) and the bull, withprestigious farms that have maintained the brilliance and bold-ness of the breed.

This province is also known for its light; for the clarity of thecoastline and vast beaches where the trees come down to theshores in some places.

The Province of Cadiz is sounique that gathers

landscapes, atmospheres andfeatures absolutely different

within its 7,385 km2.

The white sand beaches are enjoyed throughout the year forsport, strolls, swimming and sun bathing.

The multitude of landscapes means there is very varied sce-nery, atmospheres and natural features. Traces of all periods arestill evident in Cadiz: Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs and Visigothshave all left their mark in the cultural sites throughout this pro-vince.

The 18th century was Cadiz’s Golden Age; a time when over-seas relationships were formed and links were established withLatin America that still endure today in the music, architecture, food and very heart of the Cadiz natives.

It was here in Cadiz in 1812 that the Courts met and approvedthe first liberal Spanish Constitution.

There are several excellent tours that allow visitors to get toknow the province. The White Towns Route through mountainousscenery covering the north of the province is great for discoveringthe history and urban geography of life in Al-Andalus. The WineRoute, the Horse Route, the Bull Route or Coast Route all en-compass the six natural parks, which are inhabited by preciousanimal and plant species.

Cadiz is one of the hearts of flamenco in terms of culture andas an aesthetic, social and festive aspect of Andalusian life. Thecity is home to some of the most celebrated artists, whose skill

allows us to enjoy all its forms: song, the guitar and the dance. One of the province’s indispensable elements is its artisan tra-

dition. Leather items are made here to use for marketing suchprestigious brands as Loewe, Dior, Chanel or Carolina Herrera.

Its mild spring-like climate makes it an attractive place for out-door sports, golf being one of the most popular among visitorsto the province. At the present time, it has 23 high-quality cour-ses that have already hosted some of the most important inter-national tournaments. It is also the perfect place for water sportsfans to enjoy all possible types of activities.

And to round off any stay, the province of Cadiz offers a widerange of tasty gastronomic treats, using the sea as the base formany of its dishes.

Other outstanding ingredients include high-quality and renow-ned cheeses and olive oil from the Sierra de Cadiz, whose qualityis guaranteed by denomination of origin.

Also worth mentioning is of course the internationally renow-ned Jerez wine (sherry), whose many varieties allow connois-seurs to make the perfect selection for any occasion. Thesewines are stored in more than 40 bodegas, authentic museumssteeped in history. They possess a filmic quality, through whichprestigious writers, sports stars, European politicians, artists andHollywood filmmakers have passed.

Its efficient event management services and “denomination oforigin” tourism have made Cadiz an important base for meetings, conferences and incentive trips. Today its authenticity makes ita fashionable destination.

Holding such prestigious sporting competitions as the Motorcy-cling World Championship, the Ryder Cup, the World EquestrianGames, the Olympic Sailing World Championship and the Wind-surfing Championship demonstrates both the quality of the pro-vince’s facilities and its organisational capacities - without losingthe heat, colour and flavour of Cadiz.

Castles, wine cellars, monasteries, 19th century factories, farmhouses and palaces, etc. are becoming the new businessbackdrops to ensure that every conference is unforgettable – be-cause of course there is no reason why leisure should not becompatible with business, or even learning.

The medical-health, pharmaceutical, information technology, te-lecommunications, financial-economic and socio-political sectorsare the greatest source of such events in the province of Cadiz.High rungs of the European Union and in particular the automo-bile industry have placed their trust in Cadiz’s companies andprofessionals.

In terms of the large urban areas - traditional sites for confe-

rences and conventions - the province of Cadiz boasts colour andflavour inside and out; originality and action. New backdrops forleisure activities that will perfectly balance any meeting include:salt mines, marshes, nocturnal romerías, ability and strategytests... all with the assurance that everything will run as planned.

The good thing about Cadiz is that there is always a range ofthings to choose from. You can enjoy the beach, visit the winecellars, take the White Towns route or set off on a boat trip tospot dolphins and whales. Everything is within arm's reach.

A must-see are the Marco de Jerez bodegas, authentic winemuseums that are ideal for hosting dinners and shows. Peoplesuch as Harold Lloyd, Jean Cocteau, Winston Churchill, AyrtonSenna, Roger Moore and Steven Spielberg are just a few of thosewho have visited their premises. The list is endless.

Another un-missable place is the Royal Andalusian School ofEquestrian Art where you can see the horses dance; a trueequestrian ballet.

You can also enjoy the performance offered by the Yeguada dela Cartuja (La Cartuja Stud Farm), an institution that has beencommitted to improving the La Cartuja horses since the MiddleAges.

There is unique diversity in the province’s natural world: fromSanlúcar de Barrameda, crossing the Guadalquivir aboard theReal Fernando ship to enter the Doñana National Park. The boatdocks at various points to allow visitors to see and enjoy the va-rious delights of the Park and its surroundings.

More than 30% of the Cadiz province is protected land of ex-ceptional value, beginning with the Grazalema Natural Park - adeclared Biosphere Reserve. It protects the Spanish Fir (abiespinsapo), which dates back to the Tertiary Period.

There are lots of varied White Towns in this park. The route of-fers various interesting visits: the blanket factory in Grazalema, where visitors can learn how these are made using the traditionalmethod; the oil mill in Zahara de la Sierra to see how typical oliveoil is produced; or the leather workers in Ubrique.

The Alcornocales Natural Park is also known as the “last virginforest” on the Iberian Peninsula. This description is borne out bythe abundant vegetation climbing through the trees, the lands-cape of narrow fluvial valleys, the huge ferns and a very specialmicroclimate. This 160,000 hectare park holds the greatest con-centration of cork oaks in Europe.

The Breña y las Marismas del Barbate Natural Park, the Do-ñana, the Estrecho Natural Park and the Bahía de Cadiz NaturalPark round off the greenest and most refreshing route in the pro-vince of Cadiz.

Cadiz is also spectacular from the sky. There are five tours onwhich visitors can sail through the clouds and see the Bay, ortake the White Towns route, among others.

Several companies will help you get to know the inland areasand coast in the most varied of ways: windsurfing, kitesurfing anddiving classes, as well as boat trips. Groups are offered specialsessions to enjoy the bird life and botany, go climbing, do canyondescents, mountaineering, bike tourism, potholing, hang glidingand paragliding.

Fincas (farms) and cortijos (country estates) are used to pro-vide the most individual and unique accommodation. Cadiz hasmore than 30 renovated buildings, witnesses to ways of life da-ting back to the medieval age of agriculture and cattle rearing.Nowadays these allow tourists relive all the splendour of Andalu-sia’s traditional architecture.
