DESCRIPTION

The slide presentation was created by graduate students from Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative for the Port of Conneaut and City of Conneaut, Ohio. Developed with stakeholder input over the course of a fast-paced, three day weekend, the preliminary design recommendations provide an overall vision for Conneaut's Lakefront, Downtown, Route 7 Corridor, and Regional Connections. The initial concepts shown in the presentation will require further public feedback and careful design development before specific implementation plans can be made, but serve as an important step towards realizing Conneaut's future as a thriving waterfront community. For more information on the project, please contact the CUDC at www.cudc.kent.edu.

Introduction

What is a Charrette?

Charrette [shuh-ret]:The word charrette may refer to any accelerated collaborative session in which a group of designers drafts a solution to a design problem.

Such charrettes serve as a way of quickly generating a design solution while integrating the aptitudes and

interests of a diverse group of people.

Conneaut Charrette

The City of Conneaut and the Conneaut Port Authority has invited the CUDC to participate in a community process to develop design recommendations for

The charrette will focus on developing a vision for a revitalized waterfront, which is well integrated into adjacent neighborhoods, the historic downtown, and surrounding destinations via attractive corridor connections.

Specific components of the final product will be defined in collaboration with business owners, public officials, and residents during the charrette weekend.

Conneaut Charretteinitial community input & goals

Leverage scenic routes for cycling. Support MS Bike

Tour and growth of cycling with road improvements.

Focus on lakefront assets. Understand current

proposals, but take a fresh look at the harbor area.

Encourage tourism. Connect Conneaut to regional

destinations and attractions.

Add value to existing assets within Conneaut. Link

sites of interest from the lake to the highway.

Promote year-round activity. Provide winter-friendly

outdoor spaces and events.

Page 18: Conneaut Charrette

Conneaut Charretteinitial community input & goals

Explore multiple modes of transportation. Identify

opportunities for bikes, snowmobiles, and golf carts.

Diversify and increase housing options. Attract

tourists to become residents.

Reveal Conneaut’s history and identity. Develop

wayfinding strategy and public art throughout the city.

Reinforce important places that embody

Conneaut’s heritage. Revitalize the anchors in each

area.

Connections FrameworkThis team will take a broad view of the Conneaut area, extending to neighboring towns and surrounding region, serving as a synthesizer of ideas from the other groups and providing an overall framework for decision making.

Route 7 Corridor Our community partners in Conneaut made a point of including the Route 7 Corridor as a focus area for the charrette. This team will work most closely with the President of City Council to define opportunity sites for development and establish a welcoming character along the corridor’s length from I-90 to the lake.

DowntownAlthough small, Conneaut’s Downtown area offers significant potential for reenvisioning the city’s identity extending out to the surrounding neighborhoods. Through targeted reinvestments, Downtown could serve as an attractive anchor between lakefront amenities and the arrival experience along Route 7 Corridor.

LakefrontThe Lakefront team will focus on the port, harbor, and beach areas along Lake Erie. This geographic area extends from approximately the Waterworks on the west to Turkey Creek on the east, including the parking area and facilities supporting lakefront access.
