Summary of The Beach Club
Conneaut Lake Park needs to attract the demographic of those between the ages of 17-25.
The best way to do this is through the use of the restaurant and bar area, The Beach Club, located
inside of the park grounds. The Beach Club was reopened in 2007 and aids in generating cash
flow to sustain the immediate needs of Conneaut Lake Park. It is also one of the most popular
entertainment venues located within Conneaut Lake Park.
Other areas within Conneaut Lake Park that would appeal to young adults between the
ages of 17-25 would be Camperland, Hotel Conneaut, the water park, the cabins located within
he park grounds and various forms of live entertainment and events.

Focus Group Proposal
In order to further increase the revenue that Conneaut Lake Park is lacking, tactics must
be established with the interests of various audiences in mind. Promotion of the park should be
conveyed in a manner that fits each particular demographic. We have found that not many of
those within the 17-25 age range are aware of what Conneaut Lake Park has to offer. In order to
generate more revenue for this particular demographic, we will primarily focus on the Beach
Club and events that will coincide with the beach club.
The purpose of our focus group will be to gain insight on how different groups of
individuals feel about Conneaut Lake Park, what the strengths and weaknesses of the park are,
and what attracts them to the park. We also want to discuss our ideas for our campaign with the
participants to see whether or not they would be interested in them. Our focus group will consist
of two Slippery Rock high school students, two Slippery Rock University students, two Slippery
Rock locals and one college student from Penn State Behrend.
One focus group will be necessary.
Participants will be recruited by each group member. The focus group will be held in
room 205 of Eisenberg Classroom Building at Slippery Rock University on Saturday February
19, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. The focus group will be recorded with an audio recorder and each member
conducting the focus group will be taking additional notes when necessary. The coordinator will
distribute the questions and keep the conversation moving.
Each member conducting the focus group will have a copy of the focus group questions
with space to provide additional notes. Questions for the focus group will consist of the
following:
1. Have you been to Conneaut Lake Park? If so, what did you like/dislike about the park? If
you have not been there, why?
2. What other amusement parks have you been to? What attracts you to go there?
3. What is the main thing that draws you to an amusement park?
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
4. Do you go to an amusement park based on the quality/quantity of the rides or for various
activities that the park may offer?
5. Are you more willing to go to a smaller amusement park if the prices are cheaper than
others and if it is in close proximity to your home?
6. How would you feel about watching movies on the beach?
7. Would you join a volleyball tournament at Conneaut Lake Park?
8. How many of you have been to Kennywood Fright Nights or some other type of
Halloween “scarer.” What are your opinions on it? How often do you attend events like
this during the Halloween season?
The focus group will be conducted in a very informal procedure. We will clarify that
participants should be completely open and honest with their responses. We will begin the focus
group by asking whether or not the participants have been to Conneaut Lake Park. We will allow
participants to further explain their experiences at Conneaut Lake Park.
The focus group will take approximately one hour. This will allow time for each question
to be asked as well as additional questions and comments to be addressed. The group will also
address their own views and opinions to allow the focus group to be less intimidating.

Focus Group Summary
Throughout our focus group, all participants agreed on issues involving pricing and
entertainment. A high percentage of participants, who were aware of Conneaut Lake Park, said
they were more inclined to go to Conneaut Lake Park if the prices were lowered. The focus
group also thought movie nights would be a great way to bring in young adults within our age
demographic of 17-25. All of the participants expressed interest in live entertainment as well as
special events.
Our participants did not seem as interested in the rides as Conneaut Lake Park as they did
about the atmosphere. The two events that the focus group felt the most strongly about were the
Beer and Wine Festival and the Beach Club Olympics. For the members of our focus group over
21-years-old, The Beach Club seems to be the most important factor for initial attendance to
Conneaut Lake Park. The participants generated the idea of a “beer fest” featuring
microbreweries in the area. The high school students who are under 21 said competitions and
tournaments, particularly ones involving athletics, would attract them to the park.
The focus group also suggested that Conneaut Lake Park should use better advertising to
reach our target demographic, young adults ages 17-25. Other advertisement suggestions include
student discounts, sorority and fraternity days and beer pong tournaments.

Focus Group Transcription
Josh: Just introduce yourself, sir.
Ray: Oh, I’m first?
Josh: Yeah, you’re first.
Ray: Oh, I didn’t hear you two talk. So… alright, well I’m Ray. And, uh, yeah Conneaut’s
alright.
Brad: I’m Brad.
Clint: Uh, I’m Clint.
Melissa: Melissa.
Kelsey: Kelsey.
Roman: I’m Roman and my dad’s actually a part of the restoration effort at Conneaut Lake so,
just wanted to throw that out there.
Kayla: Good. Alright, so first I’m just going to ask you all like have you all been to Conneaut
Lake Park?
All: Yes, Yep.
Kayla: Yes. Kay, what did you like about the park?
Roman: It’s free to get in.
Ray: That’s true.
**Laughter.
Melissa: It’s like a nice little place to kinda just go like walk around and it’s nice and like
relaxing, not big long lines where people are shoving and pushing around. And then I liked the,
um, little like, I think if I remember right there’s like a little restaurant and then a little like
Conneaut Lake Park

(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
beachy part that you can walk out to. I like that, that’s nice.
Brad: I was going to say, being by the lake’s really cool. But..
Josh: Have you guys, uh, been to the amusement park inside? And if so, uh, what were your
kinda thoughts on that?
Roman: It’s old.
Ray: I liked it, on the basis of how shitty it is.
**Laughter.
Ray: Like, I’m not, you know, big into big crowds and stuff like that, so little honey hole of crap,
if you can get to and ride stuff, I like it.
Clint: Did you just say honey hole of crap?
Ray: Yeah.
Josh: What about the, um, explain, the price to get in, is that worth it?
Ray: No.
Melissa: Yeah, I don’t think it’s worth it, I’d much rather pay a couple more bucks and go over
to Kennywood and ride bigger rides.
Clint: Yeah, I was going to say, isn’t Kennywood only like $25?
Josh: I think Kennywood, for an all day pass is $30.
Kate: Wait, what?
Kayla: I have the price right in here, actually.
Kate: Conneaut’s cost like $30 for Kennywood is like $34 I think.
Kayla: I think it’s something like that. Yeah it’s $36.99.
Ray: They need to understand too, their advertising to a group of farmers, lobbers, oil rig drillers,
like what is in Armstrong County, what is in Crawford? Nothing. That’s your whole crowd. Poor

people, pretty much.
**Laughter.
Ray: I mean, no offense, but, if anyone’s from there. I don’t mean it that way, I mean they’re just
blue collar, average people and…
Josh: Right.
Ray: What the hell do they want to do?
Josh: What do you think that price would be, like the price range for that?
Ray: Three dollars.
Josh: Three dollars?
Clint: Well, what does Oglebay do? Because, Oglebee, like, err, no, what’s the other place?
Dinky little park?
Kayla and Melissa: Idewild.
Clint: Idewild! Yeah, that’s it. If, like, if it was kind of like that. Cuz, isn’t it like only 5 bucks or
something to get in there?
Kayla: No, it’s like $20 or $30 or something.
Kate and Melissa: Yeah.
Kayla: But that’s like for the admissions, the water park…
Melissa: Soak Zone, yeah.
Kayla: Um, Mr. Rodgers neighborhood.
Ray: Isn’t Idewild, like, way better quality though?
Kayla: I’ve never been there.
Kate: Uh, yeah.
Melissa: I think there’s more there. You get a lot more for your money at Idewild, I think.

Roman: I think everyone’s comparing Conneaut Lake to what we been brought up to think what
a theme park is, which is pretty much six flags. But, I’m going to go with what Ray said, and that
he appreciates it for the honey hole shit.
**Laughter.
Roman: But that is what it is. There’s no, they’re not going to get millions of dollars to bring in
huge rides like six flags. They have to preserve the location.
Ray: The location is terrible for that.
Roman: It is. That’s true too. The location’s bad. You can’t, I mean like you said its part of that
Crawford county Armstrong area.
Ray: The only thing that it has is that’s where the lake is. The lake brings the crowd.
Roman: Right.
Ray: There’s summer homes, cottages, camping parks. Stuff like that, that’s the only thing
they’ve got going for them.
Roman: Maybe they should, I don’t know, I’m not sure if they have this right now, but maybe
they should do like Jet Ski rentals or something because I mean like the lake brings the crowd.
Kate: They do that.
Ray: They have a restriction on the lake.
Josh: It’s like 25 horsepower or something.
Ray: Yeah, so that would put that out.
Josh: But they have like, you can put a pontoon boat and stuff out there. Um, but I don’t know
about jet skis.
Ray: I don’t think it’s so much that the park attracts people as its people are already there and it’s
something to do.
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Clint: Well, if you’re going for like that type person, why don’t you just make it something like,
it’s like a big Butler fair. But like a smaller version year-round.
Josh: Right.
Clint: They could have vendors and stuff like that.
Josh: They attract like 30,000 people or so, for a weekend.
Megan: Have you guys been to the water park at Conneaut Lake?
Clint: There’s a water park?
**Everyone’s talking over each other.
Ray: The water smells like straight urine, oh yeah I remember that.
Roman: The water parks more designed for uh smaller ages of children.
Clint: Hence, the urine.
Roman: There are a few big slides there, from what I remember but maybe if they could get a
wave pool or something of the like in there that could probably draw in a more general crowd.
Kayla: What, if you were to like say a price of what you would pay ideally to go to Conneaut,
what would it be?
Roman: What do you mean? An entrance fee or like a ride pass?
Kayla: Like a ride pass.
Roman: Probably, I mean at the most $10.
Melissa: I’d pay $12.
Kelsey: Like $10-$15 maybe.
Kate: Yeah. I’d pay around $15.
Josh: If you’re paying 20 bucks, probably, if you do go, you’re probably only going to go once
for the summer. Am I right?
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Melissa and Clint: Yeah.
Ray: That’s their whole problem.
Josh: Right. If it was $10, would they entice you to come like maybe twice?
Ray: No.
Melissa: Umm, probably not.
Ray: I have no reason to be there, that’s my thing. That’s too far. I’m not going to drive to go to
Conneaut Park. You know, from home.
Josh: Is there anything that would change your mind? Like if they did something, like what
would something be that they could do that would make you want to go there?
Ray: There’s nothing. For me, personally. It’s just not my thing.
Clint: Well I mean if you’re catering toward locals why don’t you do like a local discount? Like
if you live in a certain range or a certain county or something like that you get like.. oh if you
want a summer pass it’s like 30 or 40 bucks.
Josh: And you can come up.
Clint: Yeah! Just come whenever you want. Do they have a season pass?
Kayla: Yeah they do.
Ray: Well they can make that $20.
**Laughter.
Kayla: What draws you to an amusement park? Like why do you choose to go?
Melissa: I like cotton candy, personally.
Kelsey: The rides are exciting, do something different.
Clint: Yeah, it’s mostly the rides, but even like Roman said, it’s a different atmosphere there.
Like, you can’t just throw in a bunch of rollercoaster’s there and be like alright, everyone come.

Because no one still will.
Josh: It’s kind of, it’s weird because the park is, it’s a nice park but the amusement park is kind
of…
Clint: Conneaut’s an amusement park, it’s not a theme park.
Josh: Right.
Clint: Because a theme park has like, something more or less like six flags. With different like
themes, different coasters and stuff like that. It’s an amusement park, it’s supposed to be a family
place.
Ray: It’s basically a carnival.
Josh: Right.
Clint: Yeah.
Ray: I would say.
Clint: That makes sense.
Kayla: Um, have you guys ever gone to the Beach Club? I know you talked about it.
Roman: Yes.
Kayla: Do you like it?
Roman: Yeah, it’s pretty nice. You mean like, the bar and restaurant area?
Kayla: Yeah.
Roman: Yeah, that’s nice. There’s nothing wrong with it. I don’t know what else you want me to
tell you about it.
Melissa: I was too young to really enjoy it, but it was nice.
Kayla: Did you like, hang out like, by the lake too?
Roman: Yeah, on the sandy area?
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Kayla: Yeah.
Roman: Yeah.
Ray: It’s not very big if I remember correctly. Like the designated swimming area and all that.
Melissa: Yeah, it’s real small.
Ray: Yeah.
Kayla: Did anyone drink there?
Melissa: My friend’s mom got wasted and passed out on the sand.
Clint: I think I was 12 at that time so, but we can go now though.
**People are talking at the same time.
Kayla: Are the prices at the Beach Club reasonable from what you remember?
Roman: Yeah. It’s pretty on par with what, I mean food and prices are.
Melissa: Yeah, it was actually cheaper then like if you go on to like Kennywood or somewhere
and try to buy food. I think the one there is a lot cheaper.
Roman: Conneaut has a lot of little nice, like uh, off to the side areas for like food too. Like uh,
the Potato Patch is pretty good, they make awesome French fries.
**Talking about the luscious but limp boneless chicken wings.
Kayla: Who here’s over 21? Okay, what draws you, like to go to a certain bar?
Roman: People. The more, the better.
Clint: See, I’m opposite. Smaller people, better beer.
Ray: I like the outdoors. Atmosphere.
Kayla: Do you like, like live entertainment and stuff? Or do you like DJ’s?
Ray: If you can’t hear yourself think, then what good is it?
Clint: It depends on the park. I mean, in that area, you’d probably be better with a dive bar, but
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
like here, you’d do better with a bunch of people, DJs and shit like that. Like, me personally, if
there’s like a bunch of people there, I’m just not going to go.
Ray: You’re dealing with small town people up there. They’re not going to want to get their
friggen ear rapped off.
Kayla: For you guys who aren’t 21, would you, like say if they had like a band or something,
would you still go, even though you can’t drink or anything.
Kelsey: Yeah, I would.
Melissa: Probably.
Kayla: What kind of events would you like to see at a beachside bar that aren’t already in place
that you’d like to go to?
Josh: For instance, we were thinking like a movie night on the beach or something like that. Get
a big projector, you know, maybe put it, not like on the water, but like close to the water so you
could like sit on the beach and watch a movie or something like that.
Brad: That’d be cool.
Kate: Yeah, that’d be really cool.
Clint: Yeah, that’d be cool. Like if you did a weekly thing like that.
Josh: Yeah, something like that.
Clint: Like every Friday night or whatever.
Josh: Sure. Would that like entice you guys to go up there, hang out on the beach, watch a movie
and go get like a couple beers from the, uh, bar there. Because you can drink on like the beach
there.
Clint: Yeah, that’d be cool. For like 5 bucks.
Josh: Right.
Conneaut Lake Park

Clint: And free beer.
**Laughter.
Megan: What does your dad say about like, he must know a good bit about the park since he
does the restoration stuff.
Roman: Yeah, but what exactly are you asking?
Megan: Has he ever told you anything like about what it’s like or…?
Roman: I mean I know what it’s like I’ve been there many times.
Megan: Has he ever said anything about, like a lot of people are saying it’s dirty.
Roman: It’s not dirty. I mean it’s pretty well-kept. It’s just its old. It has that dingy look to it.
He’s part of the effort, they’ve tried to close the park down many times because they don’t make
enough money. Because it’s not a theme park like six flags so he’s part of that effort to try to
bring in money to keep it just functioning, just as is. I mean, it’s not dirty though. It’s just dingy
from wear and tear.
Clint: Like the rollercoaster falling apart.
**Laughter.
Ray: I love that coaster though.
Clint: That’s because you can burn it afterwards. Pitch that idea.
Josh: Do you guys attend like, the big Butler fair or anything? If Conneaut had something similar
would you go up for, like a weekend or like a day and hang out?
Ray: I wouldn’t it’s just too far, but I bet you all the locals would if you did something like the
big Butler fair.
Melissa: Yeah, I think if they did like a carnival or a fair kinda thing, that would draw a lot more
people.

Ray: Right.
Clint: Yeah, you’d definitely get outside of just the local area with something like that. I mean
you wouldn’t have people coming from where we’re from going, but you’d have people from
definitely a wider radius that it would bring in, from what it has now.
Melissa: Definitely, like if the price is a little bit lower and the little kids, they’d really want to
go and like, little kids love like all the carnival and games and that kinda stuff. And even like
those big like bouncy houses that they have. Those are awesome.
Clint: So would you say all Conneaut needs is a huge cotton candy thing and a bouncy thing?
Melissa: Oh yeah, for my grad party, my mom and I started planning it the other day, I’m getting
a bounce house and cotton candy thing.
**Laughter.
Melissa: I’m so pumped.
**Laughter.
Kayla: Um.
Ray: Keg wagons.
**Laughter.
Kayla: Keg wagons?
Ray: Yeah, someone can drive around the park with keg wagons.
Clint: Yeah, with kegs on the back?
Ray: Yeah.
Clint: Yeah, I’ve seen those! That’d be awesome. Yeah! Get on that! Yeah!
Ray: It’s no different than when you’re on a golf course and a beer girl comes around with it in
the park.

Clint: Turn it around! 21 and over! Crunk city, that’s where you need to go with it.
**Laughter.
Clint: Blast Little John and just like have like everyone serving beer everywhere. I’d so go up for
a weekend. That’d be awesome! With cotton candy and bounce houses. Sold.
Melissa: Boy, you got that right.
**Laughter.
Kayla: What we were trying to do is…
Kelly: Was not that.
**Laughter.
Kayla: We have, we’re trying to look at people ages 17-25, that’s why we have all of you here.
You’re kind of in that age group and then what would make them come to Conneaut and we have
our main focus is on the Beach Club and the bar. So we’re like trying, if you guys have any input
on how to make it better, any ideas on what they could do or like what would make you want to
go there.
Josh: Yeah, like if you’d live closer, because like obviously we’re kind of far away down in
Slippery Rock and the surrounding areas, even farther south, but like if you, for the universities
up there, like how far is it from Penn State Behrend? To get down there.
Brad: 45 minutes or so.
Melissa: Like, I think like different themes, um, like different things going on, like just how, um
Kennywood like does their like Fright Night thing. If they would do some kind of something like
that and then, I don’t even know if there’s, I’m not creative, but like if they just did different like

themes like that. Like one weekend if, I don’t know…
Josh: Like a spring festival.
Melissa: Yeah. Like they could do like a luau one weekend and like…
Clint: Yeah I mean that’s a hard demographic to really get because I mean, 17-25. We’re fickle.
We don’t know what the heck we like. It’s a hard group to get to because everyone’s different, so
I don’t know.
Roman: You could bring a different guest to the Beach Club, like magician, comedians,
hypnotists, stuff like that. Those are always cool. That costs money though.
Josh: Yeah, Conneaut’s kind of broke.
Kelly: In debt.
Kayla: Did anyone ever go to one of the concerts up there at the Beach Club?
Clint: There’s concerts there?
Josh: Say if we got Save and Progress to go there.
Brad: Oh, I’d go.
Clint: Oh, I’d go. Yeah.
Ray: Who’s that?
Josh: It’s a, like a local band up in Erie.
Ray: Oh.
Clint: They sing songs about video games. They’re awesome.
Roman: I went to, I think they had like Jimmy Buffet night or something. That they just played a
lot of his music and stuff. That was probably one of the things she was mentioning, the Jimmy
Buffet day/night.
Josh: Caribbean night or something.

Megan: What were those things they had, like the bikers…
Josh: Yeah, they had the bikes weekends or something like that.
Kate: Doo Wop weekends.
Kelly: Polka Fest.
Kate: Yeah, Polka fest. I’ve been there. Both weekends.
Kayla: You were?
Kate: Yeah, I used to go to the concerts all the time. I went when I was on vacation. There was
nothing to do so we’d go to the park.
**Everyone is talking on top of each other.
Clint: They even had a Daft Punk one there, like recently though.
Brad: Wait, what?
Clint: Remember the Daft Punk laser show that was down there?
Brad: No, I didn’t know that.
Clint: Oh, yeah!
Ray: Carnegie isn’t Conneaut, buddy.
**Laughter.
Clint: She brought it up, little lady.
Melissa: Yeah, that was me.
Josh: Little lady.
Kayla: Um, if, I know they have volleyball tournaments there. Would that be something you’re
interested in?
Roman: Dodgeball tournaments. That would be interesting.
Melissa: Yeah, I think the volleyball or dodgeball, either way, would be something that’s fun. I
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
know here at my school we’ll go over and after school like before a football or basketball game,
if one of the gyms open, we’ll just get a bunch of people and we uh, hit a volleyball around the
gym.
Josh: So maybe like some basketball courts or something up there, you just throw around.
Melissa: Yup, basketball courts would be a good thing. Ping pong tables.
**Laughter.
Ray: Beer pong.
**Laughter.
Kayla: If they had like beer pong tournaments? Would that be something?
Roman: I think that would be a good idea.
Melissa: I think that would actually bring in even like, that would bring in a lot more money for
them if they did the beer pong tournaments. Once you get people drunk, they’ll really be
spending money.
Roman: That would be good for our age range.
All: Yeah.
Josh: For like the bar area.
Kelly: Kinda like on the beach or something?
Josh: Beer pong on the beach?
Kate: Yeah, that’d be sick.
Ray: Beer fest at Conneaut.
**Laughter.
Brad: There ya go.
Clint: If you advertised it well enough. I bet you, you’d probably get people from Slippery Rock
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
and stuff like that. If you had a huge, gigantic like annual beer fest.
Ray: Yeah. I’m telling you, yeah.
Kelly: You could get like beer vendors or something.
Brad: Get one with a bunch of like microbreweries around here.
Roman: Yeah, that’s an awesome idea.
Kayla: That’s a good idea.
Clint: Especially western Pennsylvania, and even, well, I mean mid-western Pennsylvania there’s
a lot of beer like microbrews and a lot of places that brew beer. That, I mean, they’d come.
Josh: Like that thing up in Erie, uh they have like the…
Brad: Yeah, like some place like that where you can walk around and try samples of all the beer.
Throw live music in it. That would be fun.
Melissa: Yeah. Like a weeklong kind of thing. They could put a discount on all their different
like campsites and everything. Give a little bit of a discount for that weekend. That would really
help them.
Josh: Some kind of incentive to come up.
Melissa: Yeah.
Clint: That would be sweet.
Kayla: Beer fest and Camperland?
Kate: Classy.
**Laughter.
Clint: If you could do a weekend like something like that where you could get like a room and
board, like at the cabins. A whole weekend pass like with stuff like that for like say $30, $40 a
person, which I don’t know if that’s even doable. But, in something that price range, I think a lot
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
of people would actually come to that.
Josh: I think you can rent like the cabins up there for fairly inexpensive I want to say.
Kayla: Yeah.
Ray: Don’t ever rent a boat though, they screw you. You can ask my dad.
Clint: It’s true, it’s true. They screwed us too when we rented a boat.
Ray: A pontoon boat. Yeah.
Clint: Yeah.
Roman: I think it would be better if we, you guys did the beer fest type of deal. If it was just a
one night, annual event. Not a weeklong thing. If it was a weeklong thing people would be like,
ahh we’ll be able to, you know, go for a couple days. If it was a one night event, people would be
like we gotta go.
Josh: Yeah. Just kinda have like a one shot thing.
Kayla: Kinda like brew fest.
Clint: Yeah, I mean if you’re looking for that demographic… alcohol. You just need to add lots
of alcohol.
Ray: Yeah, but what about 17-21, what are you going to do for them?
Megan: We were going to have like under 21 nights, would you guys go to something like that?
Kelsey: Probably.
Ray: They gotta listen to this tape. Can we please send this tape to the people at Conneaut?
**Laughter.
Kayla: What do you guys do on the weekends being under 21?
Melissa: Get drunk. Legally, what I do is go bowling every once and a while. My friends and I
just like to, well that’s not legal, never mind. I was going to say we like to just egg people’s
Conneaut Lake Park

houses. As we like to call it, we like to FSU.
Kayla: What did Dr. Quinn say about the pumpkin drop?
Josh: Oh, yeah. They, they get this big ole pumpkin like bring it up with a crane and drop it on
something. And 30,000 people come to watch it.
Clint: What? What?
Ray: Where?
Josh and Kelly: Conneaut.
Ray: Really? 30,000 people?
Clint: How big is the beach area that is there like at the bar and restaurant area? Is it large?
Kayla: I’ve never been there.
Kate: It’s probably about the size of this room. I’m not even kidding.
Kayla: Really?
Kate: Oh, yeah, maybe.
Melissa: It’s not really big. It’s really small.
Clint: Really?
Melissa: Like they’re going to need to find a way to expand it, before they…
Clint: So something like a localized burning man wouldn’t work there.
Melissa: What’s that?
Clint: A burning man? It’s like when thousands of people go to the desert and drink their face off
and…
Josh: It’s like a music festival
Clint: Yeah, it’s like a big, like indie, not indie, but like rock music.
Ray: I think it’s a gay rally.
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Clint: Whatev, I’d love to go to burning man.
Roman: If you needed people to volunteer, like I know a lot of fraternities and sororities are
looking for volunteer hours. Like my fraternity’s always looking for stuff to do to gain volunteer
hours. So if you needed them to come up and clean stuff.
Josh: That’d be cool.
Roman: And volunteer to do like any of those theme nights that you were talking about, anything
along those lines.
Clint: What about renting like them. With fraternities and stuff, like what if a fraternity wants to
kick like a huge party, which I’m sure they still do here. But like what if you could rent that area
out and just be like, yo guys.
Roman: Yeah, that’s a good idea too.
Kelly: Don’t they have like a room or something in there?
Megan: Banquet rooms.
Josh: Oh, yeah.
Kelly: Or something like that.
Josh: Yeah, in the actual restaurant/bar place there’s a room you can rent, I suppose.
Kelly: I don’t know if you could rent out the whole bar.
Megan: They could just pay like a certain price for like the weekend or whatever and they would
have access to the bar, the rides and everything else.
Josh: What about like a student discount or something?
Roman: Yeah.
Clint: Student discount, yeah.
Roman: It would do better though if it was focused more on the bar, honestly.
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Clint: Yeah, I don’t know how you’d get people under 21 to go.
Melissa: Yeah really. Their best bet would probably is just knock out some of the old, dirty rides,
expand the bar and the beach and have a party.
Clint: Yeah, just make it a gigantic, crunk city.
Melissa: Beach bar.
Kayla: Is there anything else like is there a reason there’s only like a certain little section? Do
you guys know? I’ve never been there.
Roman: What do you mean a certain little section?
Kayla: You said it’s really small. The beach
Josh: The beach.
Melissa: I really don’t remember that vividly to know why, like if there’s something, like if
there’s a road.
Kate: There’s like that wedding thing that’s right beside it.
Kayla and Josh: Oh.
Kate: So it’s like the beach is probably the size of this room and then it’s like that strip landing
thing. So it just ends before that.
Ray: If I remember correctly, too, it’s like on the far back right hand corner of the property.
Josh and Kate: Yeah.
Ray: So it’s like, right on the property line.
Kate: Yeah.
Ray: And the rest of the lake’s all privately owned, obviously. So that might be why.
Josh: Okay. We need to get up there.
Kayla: I know, it’s very hard to do this when we don’t know anything about it. Um, do you guys
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
have any other opinions, ideas?
Kate: Well could you do like, I don’t know if you talked about it because I came late, like a
senior weekend or something? Like you go up for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, because we used to
get a cottage for like 200 bucks at like the motel like walking distance from the park. And then if
you did like movie night on Friday and Saturday it was beer fest, I would go up. And I would
bring my roommates if it was that cheap and you could get like the hotel and then you could be
at the park for an extra 20 bucks or… I would pay for that. But…
Josh: Weekend trips or something that’s very doable.
Kate: Yeah, like do a senior week and just advertise it because Allegheny College is right there.
They’re like 20 minutes away. So there’s a, and then Erie’s not too, and Geneva, like they’re
right there.
Josh: Edinboro.
Kate: Edinboro, yeah. So it’s like you do a senior week, err, I mean that would only limit it to
seniors, or college weekend. Call it a college weekend then.
Brad: That’s a good idea if you did a college weekend.
Kate: And like, do a college weekend, and then send it to all the colleges that’s around and do
the discount. You can go to Camperland for this much, this place, this place. And then do the,
these are the discounts at the club house or the beach house this weekend, this beers this much
and put it all out there.
Clint: Will that be enough revenue to keep that place afloat though? Because like, I mean…
Josh: Events similar to that. I mean we don’t have to have it, it doesn’t have to be like an annual
thing, it can like be a monthly thing.
Kayla: They have like events already, but like looking over them, they kind of are targeting a
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
very, like a much older crowd.
Josh: Polka fest.
Kelly: Yeah, like 50s and 60s.
Kate: Doo Wop weekend. Doo Wop weekend was the best! I’m not even kidding.
Clint: Really?
Kate: Yeah.
Clint: When’s Polka fest, I’m totally in.
Kate: It was legit. Polka fest is the best.
Melissa: I don’t really think they have like a lot of like strong advertisement like I don’t like, in
this area, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything for Conneaut Lake. Like nothing advertised. I
hadn’t even heard of it until a few years back, I was probably like 12. One of my friends asked
me if I wanted to go with her and that was the first time I’d ever even heard of the place. Where
like, with like Idewild and Kennywood like you’ve heard of those places because there’s
advertisement, there’s commercials on t.v. or even just like on pop cans you see like $10 off and
there’s just a lot more advertisement. But I’ve never seen anything for Conneaut Lake.
Josh: Yeah, like I’ve…
Melissa: Nothing.
Josh: I’ve never been to Idewild but I hear about it all the time via, through ads and cans and
stuff, so.
Kelsey: Idewild’s like not like a huge place, I went there once and from what I remember it’s not
huge like Kennywood but it’s like a nice park and I think you get a lot more for your money. It’s
definitely more worth it than Conneaut is.
Josh: Right.
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Kate: Well I also feel like those parks are in like more down here in Pittsburgh and you know,
Conneaut’s up here so we don’t go to college with most of the kids that live right around this
park so no body talks about it and if you did, you know, Conneaut’s kind of like… so. You’re
not really like well I went to Conneaut every year I was growing up.
Josh: You hear that park up north.
Kate: Yeah, it’s real cool.
Roman: Back to the fraternity thing, I’ve got an idea. If you could like, we have like founders
day, it’s just like we celebrate when our fraternity was founded. If you could like figure out all
the different fraternities and sororities in the area and maybe do their founders day there and then
it would like draw in fraternities and sororities from different colleges in the area that would go
there, party at the bar there or whatever and then you know, give them a special discount is they
wear their letters or something like that.
Josh: Yeah, for that weekend. That would be cool.
Megan: What if we could get like a coupon that when they come for that, for the next time, to get
them to come back again.
Kate and Melissa: That’d be a good idea.
Megan: It would give them a reason to come back.
Kayla: Any other thought, opinions.
Roman: I think the best thing that was said so far was having that like, that bar bash idea.
Whoever brought it up, beer pong and stuff.
Josh and Kate: Yeah.
Roman: That’ll, that’ll do it.
Josh: Bring the booze in.
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Megan: What about the people that aren’t 21? Like what kind of thing like that?
Clint: Sorry, dudes.
Kate: I mean the movie night is really cool.
Clint: You mean you don’t want to be designated drivers?
**Everyone is talking on each other.
Josh: Do sporting event tournaments, like volleyball and…
Melissa: Yeah, we like that stuff and get into it, we’re usually drunk, but…
Clint: If you closed it off to 21 and over weekends sure, but like don’t close it off to them, like
have other activities.
Josh: Right.
Clint: Have underage people go because I mean they’re going to get drunk up before.
Melissa: Yeah.
Josh: I mean the 21 and up events would obviously be centered around like the bar, which is only
just a part of the whole.
Ray and Clint: Right.
Roman: Like a bracelet to drink, but I mean whoever’s under 21 is going to find a way to drink.
Clint: Exactly.
Josh: Right.
Roman: If I was under 21, I would find a way to drink. No matter what.
Melissa: You’ll leave it out in your car. Yeah, you find your way around it.
Roman: Having over 21 events and then under 21 events at the same time.
Ray: I mean they don’t search you when you go in so you could have a 12 pack with you.
Kate: True.
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Clint: The only thing wrong with that is that it can get expensive. Especially for like the park
wheeling kegs upon kegs of beer and you might have like, if you do it like monthly, like you
might have a month where no one shows up.
Josh: Right.
Clint: Because they’ll be like oh I was there last weekend I don’t want to go to that.
Josh: Well, like the beer fest thing would be one, one time.
Clint: Right.
Megan: I think they should just have events like every so often, like different ones.
Kayla: Like a Fright Night.
Josh: Yeah, I mean we don’t want to like over exhaust our community, but we do need to have
these events to bring them in, like the big events. And like we’d have small events, uh you know
like just bands or something playing at the bar, uh you know like open mic night or something.
Melissa: This probably wouldn’t be safe, but they should get like go karts, like how they have at
Erasers, that would be so fun. I could just see like, I could even see them getting trashed on those
little go kart things.
Ray: Me too.
Clint: She’s only just met me. And she knows my lifestyle. She can read minds. Like Mario Kart.
Melissa: Yeah, like how fun would that be.
Ray: What you just said, where we come from, that’s like the thing. Everybody just crashes
quads in the telephone poles.
Melissa: Yeah. Like you said, the people in that area, you said that they’re all like your blue
collar, backwoods people.
Ray: Yeah.
Conneaut Lake Park
12382 Center Street Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
(814) 382-5112 www.clpbeachclub.com
Melissa: So say hey.
Melissa: But even, even like okay for your younger group, something I personally would like to
do, I like doing a lot of outdoors things, like kayaking and like canoeing, even if they have like
different things like that or like maybe like if they had like a day they were like oh we’re doing
this relay race with like canoeing and this kind of different stuff. I think that would draw in a lot
of people and then if they wanted to target like, how you guys were saying, like the younger,
under 21, if they could somehow like offer or like do something like that and have like some
kind of a competition. And offer even like a $500 dollar scholarship you would get a bunch of
kids that I know I’m doing everything I can to get money for college so just say, hey we’re
having this event going on. First place gets a $500 scholarship.
Josh: Like a scholarship triathlon or something.
Melissa: Yeah, like anything like that, even $200 could go towards books.
Kelly: If we had like a relay, what if we, like what if like charged you to enter and then all that
money would go to first place.
Melissa: Yeah, that money would go towards like, yeah like a couple bucks for entry, like 6
bucks maybe per person for entry and then all that go towards the scholarship, of course the park
would need to make some money from it.
Megan: For it to benefit Conneaut, they’d have to have different vendors selling stuff.
Kelly: Yeah, I’m sure if you had people there like it would be easy.
Melissa: And then even, there’s so much stuff that’s always going on with different breast cancer
stuff like even if they could work it with cahoots with like the, one of the towns around them to
do some kind of a breast cancer like run or something. And then like discount a day at the park
or like a pink theme day at the park and have like everything pink, although they can’t do pink
Conneaut Lake Park

beer, but everything else could get pinked out.
Josh: Pink martini.
Clint: Flirtini’s.
Melissa: Pink martini’s and like all that stuff.
Josh: Wait, drink cancer away, here ya go.
Clint: Here’s a flirtini.
Melissa: Yeah, like it seems like breast cancers one of the big ones that rack in the most money.
Kayla: I did an event at a bar for breast and cervical cancer and we did cotton candy cocktails
because it was carnival themed.
Kate: That’s cool.

Social Media
Twitter will help the Beach Club reach their younger demographic ages 17-25. Social media has
become the number one way to connect with this demographic. By the Beach Club having their
own Twitter page they can relate directly to their public and create a better connection.
The Beach Club Twitter Page
Tweet daily specials on drinks or appetizers.
Promote an upcoming event for that weekend and day.
The Beach Club can offer specials only to their Twitter followers that night.
HootSuite
Using HootSuite, the Beach Club can set up tweets to automatically be posted, on
certain days and at certain times.
SMS
Through EZtexting.com we can send text messages to provide subscribers with
updates and events pertaining to the Beach Club.
The basic plan is $10 a month for 200 express messages or 400 standard messages.
SMS messaging could bring in more people to the Beach Club, which can bring in
more revenue that will allow us to upgrade to more advanced plans.

Special Event
Beer and Wine Festival
The beer and wine festival will be an annual event located alongside the lake. First, local
microbreweries and wineries will be contacted to see if they would be willing to participate.
Each brewery or winery will have a booth set up with samples of their product (kegs, bottles of
wine, etc.). They also have the opportunity to perform demonstrations about how their product is
made or what makes it unique.
For activities, people attending will walk around to each of the booths and sample the
beer and wine. Beer pong will be set up in a separate area for those who wish to play.
We estimate the event will last 4 hours. Each participant who wishes to be part of the
festival will buy a wristband and pay a cover charge (estimated $20-$30). Conneaut
Lake Park will profit from the wristbands. Our goal is that after the festival ends, participants
choose the Beach Club for food and/or drinks.

Local Microbreweries and Wineries Take a Ride to Conneaut Lake Park
CONNEAUT LAKE, Pa. (June 27, 2011) – People of all ages travelled to Conneaut Lake Park’s
first annual Beer and Wine Festival held at the historic restaurant and bar called the Beach Club.
Local microbreweries and wineries were tried and tested by the eager attendees at one of
Conneaut Lake Park’s most successful events in recent history.
The festival was the first of its kind at Conneaut Lake Park, which was a part of an ongoing
effort to revitalize the park and its internal venues, such as the Beach Club.
Nine local microbreweries and wineries were invited to showcase and distribute their products to
the Beach Club patrons. Each took the opportunity to demonstrate how their unique product is
made and answered questions from those who had a thirst for knowledge.
Jack Moyers, the chair of Conneaut Lake Park’s Board of Trustees, recounted on the success of
the event and what it meant for the park and for the local businesses showcased.

other. The park and the businesses featured will undoubtedly benefit from this great event.”
The drinks were not the only stars of the day; a favorite local band played hit music throughout
the event, games were played on the beach and delicious food was enjoyed by everyone. The
familiar sight of happiness that has for so long been part of Conneaut Lake Park, was easily seen

The third event will be corn hole which involves each pair being teamed up
against another one.
Everything will come down to an obstacle course containing:
o Tire Running
o Jumping Rope
o Climbing Over and Under Three Tables

Executive Summary
The goal of this campaign was to increase awareness, attendance and participation of Conneaut
Lake Park. As a group, we decided to focus our campaign on bringing in customers ages 17-25
by focusing out efforts on Conneaut Lake Park’s bar and restaurant, the Beach Club. We began
our campaign with research of other bars and amusement parks. From there we conducted a
focus group and distributed surveys based on the focus group’s findings. Our research led us to
believe that our target demographic would be interested in a Beer and Wine Festival, Beach Club
Olympics and a movie night. This campaign book provides the research conducted, strategies the
Beach Club can use to attract our audience and campaign proposals for each of the previous
events. Should Conneaut Lake Park wish to implement any or all of the activities, we strived to
provide all necessary items the Board of Trustees would need for implementation.

Overall Evaluation Plan
We can evaluate the success of the events and live entertainment by overall traffic flow.
Hopefully with the implementation of events the overall revenue will increase by 15% or higher.
Also, hopefully attendance to the events and live entertainment will increase by 15% or higher.
We will also evaluate our success by increasing our social media status. We hope to increase
Twitter followers by 20% and we hope to increase our fans on Facebook by 20%.
Surveys will be sent out to local and surrounding areas in order to get feedback on Conneaut
Lake Park and the Beach Club once recommendations are implemented.

Return on Investment Discounts and specials that are offered through the Beach Club will attract more people and
bring in more revenue. People will be more willing to return if they are given incentives.
People will be more likely to refer their friends to The Beach Club if they are satisfied
with their experiences.
Special events that are offered through The Beach Club will give people a reason to remember
The Beach Club when considering future recreational activities.
People will continue to come back to events in the future if they are held consistently
each year.
If people attend special events that are held at the Beach Club, they are also more
likely to stay at The Beach Club for food and/or drinks prior to the event.
Success of our campaign can be measured by sending out surveys to guests of The Beach Club
or people that attend special events at The Beach Club.
Ask them whether or not they enjoyed the event.
If they would be willing to attend the event again.
If they would be willing to return to The Beach Club again.
Find out what they enjoy the most about The Beach Club.
We can measure the amount of Twitter and Facebook followers we have had since the campaign
implementation.
Interact with followers in order to gain feedback.
Measure positive and negative feedback through social media sites.

Conclusion
Through our campaign, Conneaut Lake Park will be able to increase the amount of people from
younger generations into the park. Our campaign includes suggestions, events, and new outlets
of reaching out target audience.
Through our research we have found heavy support behind a Wine & Beer Festival event at the
park. This event not only has the support of the younger audience, but also has an appeal to older
demographics as well. By reaching out to support the local beer and wine making communities,
Conneaut can draw audiences into the park with a unique and fun event.
The Beach Olympics event serves to cater to the high school in the local areas surrounding the
park. Through our research we have found that a lot of high school students had a strong interest
in physical activities such as sports and games. We would like to capitalize on these findings and
provide an annual sporting tournament which features a wide variety of games and events to
compete in. By combining teamwork and activities, the Beach Olympics will be able to reach
this key target demographic and keep them returning to the park.
The success of reaching younger audiences requires active participation in local high schools and
universities. Because of this, it is necessary for Conneaut Lake Park to maintain an active role in
their social media presence on the internet. Younger generations utilize social media everyday to
keep in constant contact with friends, family, and businesses of interest. Social Media is not as
simple as having a Facebook and Twitter pages; it’s about connecting to the audience and giving
a personality to Conneaut Lake Park that they can relate with.
We would like to thank Conneaut Lake Park for providing our class the opportunity to contribute
to support the park. Utilizing the creative efforts the class has provided we are certain of the
success of the park. The campaigns contain valuable information, ideas, events, and suggestions
that can benefit Conneaut Lake Park in exciting new ways.
