Given: Independent clauses need a period or a semi-colon separating them.

Given: Dependent clauses can only be added to an independent clause.

“English was supposed to be fun, reading stuff in class.”“Mr. Carver has a weave, a weird one that doesn’t match his hair.”

Given: Two dependent clauses can not be combined without an independent clause.

“reading stuff in class, a book that I don’t like.”“hoping for a break, which won’t happen in this town.”

Given: Dependent clauses can not stand on their own.“her not even knowing her own child’s birthday.”“which you know ain’t even her real name.”

Given: Independent clauses have a completed conjugated verb. Dependent clauses do not. “English was supposed to be fun.”“English class not being fun at all.”

“Running outside in the rain is fun. I enjoy it.”“Running outside in the rain is dumb; I hate you.”

Independent Clauses

*Can be a stand-alone sentence

*Have three essential pieces (1) Subject: someone or something that does an action, is being described, or is being discussed (He, Bob, Love, the puppy, the bride, a cat, independent clauses, what you think) (2) Conjugated verb: a word that is stuck with the subject and would change if the subject changes … a word that can be past or future … or a helping verb (is, are, plays, dances, stinks, could, should, would) (3) Feels completed: “It is” is complete; “If she loves” is not.

Page 10: Connect to 1 st -11 th grade:

Dependent Clauses

*Can NOT be a stand-alone sentence

*Fall into three basic categories (1) CLAUSE IN DRAG (-ing word without “is, are, were, was, could, should, might, would, used to, may, etc) (2) INCOMPLETE “COMPLETEY” WORD (3) NO VERB (4) WHICH/that SENTENCES
