before you start ■ If you intend to use an interactive whiteboard,

review the PowerPoint slide(s) for this lesson on the CD-ROM that comes with this manual.

■ You may wish to invite a musician from a local church to perform an item at the assembly.

■ This lesson involves a narrated drama. You will need to choose some students to take part. It is best to have a team member do this, as listed below, but if this is not possible, you may use students. Be aware though that this may require further instructions. However, the part of the narrator must be played by a team member.• Narrator (team member)• Jesus (team member)• three women (one of them a team member

if possible)• Peter• two disciples, one of whom is Cleopas (one

should be a team member if possible). ■ Make sure your team members are familiar

with the script. ■ You may use simple biblical costumes or

alternatively make signs with the character’s name and use string to wear them around the neck.

■ It is important to read from the Bible itself, so the children can see that the Bible is essential for Christians because it is God’s word to us. Mark the relevant passage in the Bible before the assembly.

■ Check your sound system well before the assembly starts to ensure it is working and you know how to operate it.

■ Pray in the weeks leading up to the assembly that God will touch the lives of the students, teachers and parents who attend the assembly.

■ Ensure that all team members and participants know what role they will play in the assembly.

■ Check that the students are seated so they can clearly see what is happening in the lesson.

■ Try to encourage the good behaviour of the students during the assembly, for example, ‘Thank you for sitting and listening so well to the Bible reading.’

If you have asked a musician or musicians to perform an item, invite them to perform before the following drama in Bible focus.

» Bible focus Narrator: Jesus’ disciples were feeling very sad.

(Action: disciples look sad.)

N: They just didn’t know what to do next.

(Action: scratch heads; shrug shoulders.)

N: A terrible thing had happened. Their good friend Jesus had been killed on a cross and been put into a tomb, like a cave.

(Action: heads down, shaking heads.)

N: On the Sunday after it had happened, some women walked to the tomb.

(Action: women walk on the spot.)

N: But when they got there, they got a shock!

(Action: women gasp in shock.)

N: The tomb was open! The big, heavy stone that covered the entrance had been rolled to one side. The women were so surprised! They rubbed their eyes to make sure they were seeing clearly.

(Action: women rub their eyes.)

N: So they very carefully went into the tomb.

(Action: women stoop over and enter the tomb.)

N: It was dark in there. But suddenly, the tomb was fi lled with light, and two men stood beside them. The women were astonished and put their hands over their eyes in fear.

(Action: women cover their faces with hands.)

N: Then one of the men spoke and said, ‘Jesus isn’t here—he’s come alive.’ The women knew they had to tell someone about this, so they ran back to tell Jesus’ friends what had happened.

(Action: women run on the spot.)

N: But do you know what? They didn’t believe them. Except for Peter. Peter ran to the tomb.

(Action: Peter runs on the spot.)

N: The disciples were shocked! They thought they were seeing a ghost! They started to shake in fear and their knees started knocking together.

(Action: disciples’ knees knock together.)

N: But Jesus asked them, ‘Why are you scared?’

(Action: Jesus repeats this.)

N: Then he said, ‘It’s me … Jesus.’ Jesus held out his hands and said, ‘Touch me if you don’t believe it.’ So the disciples touched him on the hands.

(Action: disciples touch Jesus on the hands.)

N: They were still a bit confused. They weren’t really sure.

(Action: disciples look confused.)

N: So they gave him some food to eat. Only a real person could eat food!

(Action: disciples make gestures as if handing Jesus food.)

N: Jesus thanked them.

(Action: Jesus says ‘thank you’.)

N: And then he ate the food! It tasted good! ‘Yum’, said Jesus.

(Action: Jesus says ‘Yum!’)

N: Jesus then reminded them of something they had forgotten. Let’s read what he said from the Bible.

N: He bent down, looked into the tomb, and sure enough, Jesus was gone! The women were right! Peter really wasn’t sure what to make of all this. He was so confused.

(Action: Peter looks confused; scratches his head.)

N: Later that day, two of Jesus’ disciples were walking to a nearby town. As they were walking, they were chatting about what had happened earlier that day.

(Action: Cleopas and the other disciple walk on the spot, adlibbing about the day’s events.)

N: As they were walking and talking, a third man joined them.

(Action: Jesus comes along beside them and walks on the spot.)

N: The disciples did not realise who this was at first. But they listened carefully to the man who seemed to know why Jesus had to die.

(Action: Cleopas and the other disciple continue to walk on the spot, listening to Jesus.)

N: Then later, when they stopped to eat, they realised just who had been telling them all the amazing things about Jesus from the Scriptures! It was Jesus himself!

(Action: Cleopas and the other disciple look surprised.)

N: They stared at Jesus. They stared at each other. They were so surprised!

(Action: Cleopas and the other disciple stare at Jesus, then each other and then look at the audience in surprise. As they do this, Jesus leaves.)

N:They looked back at Jesus, but he was gone!

(Action: disciples look even more surprised.)

N: They decided this was such big news that they would have to tell the others. So they hurried off to join the other disciples.

(Action: disciples hurry on the spot.)

N: A short while after they had arrived, Jesus appeared again.

(Action: Jesus joins the other disciples.)

» Concluding prayerDear God, thank you for the message we heard today. Thank you for the people who tell others about Jesus. Help us to listen to your message, to put our trust in Jesus and to follow him always. Amen.

» Farewell ■ Thank everyone for their attendance and for the

opportunity to hold the assembly.

■ Ask the musician who performed earlier to play as the students leave the assembly, or play the backing track of Jump up, Jesus is alive (track 8): CEP Infants CD (Disc 1) .

» ConnectionsFor people who love and follow Jesus, Easter is a very special time because it is when we stop and think about what Jesus has done for us.

Let’s fi nd out more about that. Read along with me.

(Indicate the second-last paragraph of the Good news! Visual aid and read it aloud.)

Jesus died on the cross and God brought him back to life so people could be forgiven for not living God’s way.

And here’s the good news for every one of us here today. Read along with me again.

(Indicate the last paragraph of the Visual aid and read it aloud.)

This is the good news: everyone who puts their trust in Jesus and follows him can live as God’s friend forever.

(Indicate the fi nal sentence.)

Let’s read this last sentence together loudly.

(Read the sentence with the students.)

How wonderful is that!
