CONNECT WITH IMBERHORNE SCHOOL
OUR SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM AT IMBERHORNE We are often complemented on the strong leadership that Imberhorne has. Recent comments from both Ofsted and our own parent question-naires have reinforced this message. We thought it would be nice to bring you some messages from our Senior Leadership Team to reacquaint those families who have been at Imberhorne for a while and to familiarise those who have recently joined us in Year 7.
Mr M Brown - Headteacher
I am very proud to be the Headteacher of Imberhorne school, having been in this role since 2013. Prior to this, I was Deputy Headteacher at Imberhorne for five years. I feel very fortunate to be support-ed by an outstanding Senior Leadership Team who embody our school values on a day to day basis and are thoroughly commit-ted to making Imberhorne a happy, caring and supportive community.
My background is in the Arts, an area of the curriculum that provides an important creative outlet for students. There are many areas of strength in the school and I believe that the creative subjects provide a great deal of character both in the range of things we do and how we engage with the world. My own creative output is in the form of occasional pieces of artwork and some rather colourful ties!
Dr C Barr - Deputy Headteacher
I thoroughly enjoy being the Deputy Headteacher at Imberhorne, it is such a great school and I consider myself very fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful colleagues, delightful students and their supportive parents. I have held a number of roles at Imberhorne since joining in Sep-tember 2005, when I was appointed Assistant Headteacher, responsible for KS3.
I trained as a PE and Science teacher and re-trained in PSHE and Citizenship. In addition to these subjects I also love teaching Geography; I am a bit of a coun-tries, capitals and flags nerd and am lucky enough to have taken a round-the-world trip. Away from school I enjoy being fit and healthy and I try to find time to pursue my favourite sporting activities such as snowboarding, tennis and yoga. Cont’d on page 2…

Mrs H Timson - Assistant Headteacher
I joined Imberhorne as Assistant Headteacher, leading Key Stage 3 in 2012 and I love every minute. There is something quite special about this school, working at a place where staff and students really care about each other is probably what gives it the extra little bit of magic.
I trained as a PE teacher in Cardiff and worked for 18 years at Croesyceiliog school in Cwmbran. It was here that I became a Head of Year and then moved into the Senior Leadership Team. People are often fooled by a hint of a Welsh accent which is slowly diminishing but I am actually from Galway on the west coast of Ireland. Having a family has given me less time for my passions although I believe strongly in the need for regular exercise for my own sanity and I am huge advocate of this for our students.
Mr M Jones - Assistant Headteacher
I joined Imberhorne as a Maths Teacher in 1992, becoming Head of Year a few years later. My current role as Assistant Headteacher, a post I have held since 2012, is to over-see the strategic planning and implementation of the whole school timetable, lead in student academic communications to parents/carers and produce and analyse school data for both parents, staff and the wider community.
As a Maths graduate from the University of Oxford, I thoroughly enjoy working at Imber-horne in such a successful Maths department. In my spare time I am Chair of Governors at a primary school and I love tending to my allotment with my two children.
OUR SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM CONT’D
“The headteacher and senior leaders lead the school with passion and determination. Leaders, including governors, are ambitious for academic success and in enabling pupils to be happy and well-rounded individuals”

Mr M Conroy - Deputy Headteacher
In 2014, I was very pleased to join such a successful school as Imberhorne and work with such a hard-working and talented team, progressing from my role as Assistant Headteacher at a school in Hove. My role is a very broad one, covering the design of the curriculum and assessment as well as the more organisational tasks such as the over-seeing the school calendar, staffing cover and all school trips.
I still very much enjoy teaching my subject, History, especially at Key Stage 5 where I can pursue my love of modern Russian history. Outside of school, I very much enjoy watching and participating in sport. These days I am restricted to watching rugby and football, but I still manage to pick up a tennis racket occasionally and over the last few years have developed a passion for cycling.
Mr D Jones - Assistant Headteacher
I joined Imberhorne in 2012 having previously held teaching posts in Worthing and Heathfield in East Sussex. I absolutely love working at Imberhorne which allows me to work so closely with our brilliant students and their parents. My role covers a number of areas including leading Key Stage 4 as well as behaviour and safeguarding across the school.
I originally trained as a History teacher and history remains a passion. I enjoy visiting places of historical interest at home and abroad. I have also discovered a love of running, having completed 3 half-marathons to date!

In a recent Parent’s Forum meeting, a
question was raised as to whether Imber-

mental health needs of our students.
This is an area that we have invested in
enormously to ensure that our staff and
students are supported as much as we can.
In the last 18 months we are pleased to
share the impressive amount of training

Homework can bring families together for a warm-hearted moment where students ask their parents or siblings for help
Issue 4 2019-2020
Since September, we, the student council
team have been working hard to raise the
profile of the student council around
school.
We meet as a council 4 times per term
and feedback to the Senior Leadership
Team once a term.
We have introduced drop-in sessions for
students to drop in and share their
thoughts and ideas on how to improve the
school. Ideas that have been raised so far
include; form trips/teambuilding days, PE
kit amendments and changes to DEAR in
practical subjects.
We have also introduced a student council
email account, to allow students to elec-
tronically contact us with any ideas or
concerns they have.
More recently, we have utilised the school
intranet page to help us raise the profile
of the student council. When students log
in to the intranet page, our team photo
appears with key information and dates,
including meetings and non-uniform
days. You can see an image of how we
have incorporated this below.
We also attended a Student Leadership
event with Sackville and Downlands
Schools’ Student Councils. We discussed
and exchanged aims and ideas for the
school year. By doing this, we all had a
clear understanding of what we want to
achieve for this year and beyond. One
example is bamboo cutlery. Here at Im-
berhorne, we have employed something
very similar – corn-starch cutlery, which
is biodegradable. We also looked at the
option of having more Vegan options on
the canteen menu to promote a healthy
lifestyle. It was a very positive day, and we
feel that networking with other students
from other schools, helped open our eyes
to ideas. This experience really helped us
work on our communication and leader-
ship skills too - all key skills needed to be
on the student council team. We are look-
ing forward to hosting the next leadership
day after Easter.
On the 17th December, we attended a Sen-
ior Leadership Team meeting to present
what we, the Student Council have
achieved so far this year and what our
next steps are before we meet again in
March. We want to look at creating focus
groups - An Eco Group - with the help of
Mr Langstone, a Student Welfare Group
- with the help of Pastoral Staff, and a
Teaching and Learning Group with the
help of Dr Barr.

New for 2019 - 2020
Thank you to all our parents/carers who completed the survey we sent to your in-boxes in December. We
use the information from the 346 replies we received to ensure that the Imberhorne School experience is
as good as it can be. Your opinion matters!
We have launched this new ‘You asked, we did’ section to share the changes that we make as a direct result
of feedback that we receive. We also use the information we obtain from you to target the right type of
messages in this publication and other forms of communication that we use. In other words, what you tell
us you’d like more of - we try and offer it.
So...
In response to requests for easy access to staff emails and help knowing who to get in
touch with we have further developed our website to include the emails of all teaching
staff on the subject pages and have rearranged the helpful contacts and form tutor pages
to assist further. Hopefully finding the right person to email is now far easier when you
navigate the website. Of course, our wonderful reception team are always here to help
you too if you need to pick up the phone.
