It’s hat season again, so don’t forget to wear your hat to church on Mother’s Day, May 14. The weekend before is Derby weekend – another good time to wear a hat.

Sometime in June, we plan to have a “Mad Hatters” Party. Look for more in the June Steeple Bell.

On Sunday, May 21, Brandenburg United Methodist Church will close its doors. Instead of going to church that morning, we will seek to be the church in our community through a variety of projects and outreach ministries in response to our Love Thy Neighbor message series. Love Thy Neighbor (LTN) is a bold, courageous, ground-breaking churchwide effort that will transform our congregation, impact our community and help our church touch the world. Love Thy Neighbor is: 1 month of loving actions toward our neighbors includ-ing LTN neighborhood parties hosted by church members 3 preparatory worship services. 2 canceled worship services replaced by a day of service in our community followed by an evening worship celebration service and a community BBQ After spending three weeks learning about biblical compassion, service and Christ’s heart for others, our church will apply the lessons learned –– worshiping through serving. On Sunday, May 21, we will gather at 10 a.m. for a time of sending forth. We will then reconvene at church at 4 p.m. for an outdoor worship service (weather permitting), followed by a community BBQ meal at 5:30 p.m.

The list below reflects the projects currently beingplanned. Some involve going into the community; others involve remaining at church. There is something for every age, skill level and physical ability. Community Projects: Buttermilk Falls Cleanup Individual Yard Cleanup Prayer Walk/Caravan Volunteer at Clothes Closet Landscape corner of Broadway & Main StreetLandscapeflowerbedatanimalshelterDrywall Project for Angel Tree MinistriesChoir to nursing home/assisted living facilities

We are now collecting items for the inmate freedom packs and cleaning supplies for the animal shelter. You may drop items off at church any time between now and LTN Day. Items for Inmate Freedom Packs (Goal of 50 packs) Phone cards Restaurant cards (McDonald’s, Burger King, etc.) Personal care items (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, wetwipes,socks/flipflops)Cleaning Supplies for Animal Shelter Pine Sol 409 Paper Towels Bleach Cat Litter Air Fresheners Laundry Detergent Dish Soap Toilet Paper Sponges Dry Erase Markers Garbage bags 13 and 42 gallon sizes

What’s love got to do with it? Everything!Love Thy Neighbor Day Sunday, May 21

The lasting benefits of LTN Day: Transform our congregation into a church that regularly reaches beyond its walls Increase passion to serve and grow spiritually. Make new friends and build closer relationships. Impact our community Build relationships between our church and community organizations. Meet real needs. Reach out to people looking for a service-oriented church. Earn the right to be heard. Catch a vision for God’s heart of compassion. Learn about community needs and ways to respond. Live out our vision to be a church that is self-sacrificingandlifegivingtoothers.

Let me appeal to all of our church members and regular attenders to give your full support to our Love Thy Neighbor emphasis and day of serv-ice on Sunday, May 21. I am personally excited to pastor a church that is willing and ready to put their faith into action by engaging with our community and neighbors. LTN embodies the very values we seek to live by, including serving others, rather than serving our-selves. Every person can have a role in this day by serving in some capacity from outdoor projects, to indoor projects, to preparing and serving our community BBQ meal. The Bible reminds us clearly that faith without works is dead (James 2:26 ) and that we should not merely listen to the Word, but do what it says (James 1:22). So let’s go love our neighbors in the name of Jesus Christ!

Each year, all churches in the Kentucky Conference are invited to participate in a mission offering at Annual Confer-ence. The Mission Offering for 2017 Annual Conference will support scholarships for our Camp & Retreat Ministries. The goal is $150,000. Aldersgate and Loucon will each receive 25% of the of-fering to fund summer camp scholarships. Kavanaugh con-tinues to develop a summer mission program called Mission Basecamp which will receive 10% of the offering. Our mis-sionaries in Belize, Jamie & Lisa Williams, are working to develop a camp & retreat center there, so this ministry will receive 10% of the offering. The remaining 30% will fund scholarships for children and youth from the Red Bird Mis-sionary Conference to attend our camps (Red Bird’s camp was recently closed).

Health Kits at Annual Conference On Tuesday, June 13, all conference members, spouses and teenage children are invited to participate in Church Be-yond...An Afternoon of Service & Learning, a time when we will move beyond the walls of the church and serve and learn together. One of the groups at the Church Beyond...An Afternoon of Service & Learning will put together Health Kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The goal is 2,000 kits. The Heartland District is asked to supply hand towels for the Health Kits. They may be up to 17x27 inches in size and cannot be kitchen towels. Please bring your dona-tions of hand towels to the church, and they will be delivered for inclusion in the health kits.
