Dear Friends: God has blessed us greatly through the pandemic. So far, no member has contracted the virus. We have remained healthy and strong. We are in the process of considering when and how to re-open worship and small groups at Our Redeemer. With the vast majority of our members over 65 and considered “at risk” we will be taking a

cautious approach to ensure that everyone remains healthy and strong. I am glad so many of you are participating in the zoom meetings and on-line worship. We actually have more people viewing our worship during this pandemic than were present in worship. Pastor Jennifer is concluding her class on evangelism, and one of the easier ways to reach out to others is to simply forward the links to worship to friends and invite them to participate in worship. It is much less confrontational and still allows your friends to participate at their own time if they so choose. No matter when we begin meeting in small groups and worship again, we will continue to videotape worship so that those who can not be present, or those with at risk medical continues can still stay connect over the internet. It is also important to realize that when we do re-open things will be different. We will be asked to practice social distancing in church, you will be required to wear masks in worship, there will be no live choir anthems, Holy Communion will be distributed differently and all singing will be limited. And we will discourage handshakes and hugs (that’s a tough one for me and this congregation). There will be more information in the coming weeks. At a special meeting of the ELCA congregations and our bishop, there were only 1 or 2 congregations planning to re-open before the end of June. Pastor Kinndlee Lund from Fountain Valley is recovering from the COVID-19 virus. She is young and resilient. If I would contract the virus as a person over the age of 65, the odds of hospitalization and/or death rise dramatically. The Bishop warned that pastors are the ones most likely to catch the virus and spread the virus because of our multiple contacts with people, and he urged caution for all older pastors before we reopen worship. This is hard for me! I want to open as soon as possible, I miss the hugs and the relationships. I miss the fellowship and friendship. This too shall pass, but until it does, we will err on the side of caution: to protect you and me! And until then, we will continue to pray, we will continue to meet on-line, we will continue to celebrate virtual communion, we will continue to tape excellent music, and we will continue to find hope and life in Christ. Til we meet again,

Pastor Brian

Reflections from the Intern Pastor by Pastor Jennifer Garcia

How have we been connecting during social distancing?

A couple weeks ago, I spent a lovely Saturday afternoon savoring tea, relishing scones made by Patty and Val, learning the varied histories of dozens of lovely teacups and mugs, and catching up with the amazing women of Our Redeemer. Amazingly, that all happened while I was in a room with no one but my cat.

While Zoom and other electronic means of communication are no substitute for having a face-to-face conversation, COVID-19 has challenged me to expand my definition of connection. Given the choice, I’m sure pretty much all of us would choose a safe in-person gathering instead of an online one, but there was genuine joy and delight in that afternoon spent together, yet in our separate spaces.

I was moved by the variety of our drinking vessels. Some people had treasured family heirlooms or delicate teacups brought from faraway places. Others drank from Disney-themed cups that reminded them of sunny days spent at the “happiest place on Earth.” Some used everyday mugs—stalwart companions that provide energy and comfort on difficult mornings. If these things have such lovely stories, how much more so does each person to whom they belong? And we got to share pieces of our stories and personalities over tea.

In my devotion, I talked about tea as a form of sabbath. It is a special time set aside for connection, rejuvenation, and rest. That day, we connected with each other and God and were renewed. I’m so thankful for that afternoon of sabbath time.

I wish we could have met in person for the tea, pouring each other cups and sharing hugs. I look forward to the day when we can do that again. In the meantime, though, I rejoice that we were able to share stories and laughter online. We don’t need to wait until we’re back together in person to find ways to support each other and be in community.

In that spirit, next month I’ll be sharing about the evangelism workshops I led and how we can share our faith even when we can’t be face-to-face with our neighbors. That connection we shared over tea does not have to be limited to the people in our congregation. We can connect with others about the love of Jesus even in this challenging time.

Wishing you all love and support and peace in the Holy Spirit,

Pastor Jennifer

SHIP NEEDS PERSONAL ADVISORS: The Self-Help Interfaith Program provides transitional housing, meals and job search coaching for homeless, employable adults. There are usually 6-8 adults in the program at any one time and faith communities are also the major source of Personal Advisors (PA’s) who are the heart and soul of the program. PA’s commit to a 4 month period time when they will mentor two or three guests to guide them through job appli-cations and interviews, finding and attaining resources available, saving mon-ey during their stay at SHIP and securing affordable housing when they grad-uate. Please contact Pat Goodman at 949-575-9769 if you would like to learn more!

Dry Ingredients • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/3 cup sugar • 1 teaspoons baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients: • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, frozen • 1/2 cup dried fruit • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 large egg

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. • In a medium bowl, mix flour, 1/3 cup sugar, baking powder, baking soda

and salt. Grate butter into flour mixture on the large holes of a box grater; use your fingers to work in butter (mixture should resemble coarse meal). Or if you have a food processor-which is way easier-add all dry ingredients then add butter and pulse (it only takes one or two pulses)-so much easier and faster. In a small bowl, whisk sour cream and egg until smooth then stir in Dried Fruit.

• Stir sour cream mixture into flour mixture until large dough clumps form. Use your hands to press the dough against the bowl into a ball. (The dough will be sticky in places, and there may not seem to be enough liquid at first, but as you press, the dough will come together.)

• Place on a lightly floured surface and divide into two. Pat into a 7- to 8-inch circle about 3/4-inch thick. Sprinkle with 1 tsp. of sugar. (the original recipe calls for one ball but they seemed to big and thick-we wanted everyone to be able to try 2 or 3 kinds so we made them smaller.

• Use a sharp knife (or a pizza cutter works great) to cut into 8 triangles; place on a cookie sheet (preferably lined with parchment paper), about 1 inch apart.

• Bake until golden, about 15 to 17 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes and serve warm or at room temperature. (Recipe adapted from All Recipes)

Orange-Cranberry: Grate orange rind into dry ingredients, add cranberries to wet ingredient. Lemon-Blueberry: Grate Lemon Rind into dry ingredients, add fresh or dried blueberries to wet ingredients. White Chocolate Cherry: Add White Chocolate Chips to into dry ingredients, add dried Cherries to wet ingredients. Cherry-Almond: Add 1/2 tsp. almond extract and dried Cherries to wet ingredients. Mini Chocolate Chip: Add 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract to wet ingredients and mini chocolate chips to dry ingredients. White Chocolate Apricot: Add dried Apricots to wet ingredients and white chocolate chips to dry ingredients. Raisin: Add to wet ingredients Strawberry: Add fresh/freeze dried strawberries to wet ingredients We added the dried fruit into the wet ingredients and let it set about 5 minutes to make them a little softer.
