Who are OPPORTUNITY YOUTH?
YOUTH AGED 16 TO 24 WHO ARE OUT OF SCHOOL AND READY TO WORK
AN UNTAPPED SOURCE OF TALENT FOR LOCAL EMPLOYERS
YET EMPLOYERS AND OPPORTUNITY YOUTH RARELY GET CONNECTED because these qualified young people often:
• Are unaware that jobs are available
• Lack knowledge around the steps they need to take to pursue and secure these jobs
• Lack access to many informal networks required to secure employment
• Have little or no support navigating standard application processes
• Face systemic barriers which further limit their access, with two-thirds facing difficult life circumstances, including many living below the poverty line
The 100,000 Opportunities Initiative facilitates the connections between employers, youth-serving organizations, and opportunity youth, so everyone wins.

TALENT Immediate access to an underutilized talent pool of opportunity youth who have the skills and ability to successfully take on entry-level roles
JOB FAIRS Participation in targeted job fairs that will maximize your reach to qualified job-seekers
TRAINING A pipeline to organizations that provide skills training, education services, and case management to opportunity youth increasing the likelihood a successful hire
RETENTION Best practices for employing and retaining opportunity youth
Reducing turnover by employing opportunity youthsaves money. Cutting turnover in half saves retail company with 5,000 entry-level employees $2.5 million per year and a retail company with 100 employees $54,000 per year.
Retention rates are up to 300% higher. Employees hired from job-readiness programs targeting opportunity youth stayed in their jobs longer than their entry-level peers.
1 Evaluate your need to fill open positions and discuss your current readiness to hire and on-board new staff.
2 Create a connection between your business and local youth-serving organizations.
• Share about your business at a youth-serving organization event• Provide job skills training to a pool of potential youth applicants• Host job site tours or job shadowing as a part of a work preparation curriculum• Participate in or co-host a job hiring event
3 Assess hiring outcomes and share best practices to help increase your retention rates over time.
HOW YOU GET IT.Our team works with you in a three-step process to:
They serve as the conduit to help opportunity youth develop the skills they need to find and keep a job, and connect them to employers who need talent for their entry-level positions.
YOUTH-SERVING ORGANIZATIONSare a critical part of the process.

SUCCESS STORIES: Businesses are seeing a positive impact.
“I’m looking for someone who gets involved, is knowledgeable,
connects with customers and understands the operation of
the store. Someone who goes above and beyond
what their daily duties are. Prisma (an opportunity youth)
exemplifies that.”
MARTIN AMADO STARBUCKS STORE MANAGER
STARBUCKS
“At Nordstrom, we hope that opportunity youth are our future employees. It can be a challenge for these young people to find and connect with us, and that’s why
we’re so excited to be a part of this initiative – it makes it easier for them to learn more about Nordstrom as a great place to work and consider us as a place to start their career.”
FANYA CHANDLER NORDSTROM REGIONAL STORE MANAGER
“Opportunity youth bring such a
diversity and a passion to our businesses, and they help us think differently about the businesses
we’re in, and so I actually think we get much more out of them then they get from us.”
FERRIL ONYETT LEARNING AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR, TACO BELL

“My whole experience has been pretty amazing. I want to work in this industry the rest of my life, whether that be with Starbucks or opening
my own coffeehouse. I’m thankful to Starbucks. It’s put
me on a good path and helped me build a foundation
for where I want to go in the future.”ETHAN STARBUCKS BARISTA
“Having a set of adults around me who cared about me, that showed me that
tough love, that pushed me constantly, reminded me about my skills and my potential…It made me feel so good about myself and I don’t think at any point in my life I had ever felt that way.”
KIRSYS AMERICORPS VISTA MEMBER
“I have a really nice crew. I have their
support. They always tell me I’m really good at this. I feel recognized for my work. I’ve been really lucky. School, family, home, work are my everything.”

EMPLOYER COALITION MEMBERS IN SEATTLE/KING COUNTY:
“WE’VE FOUND THAT THE 100K YOUTH ARE RETAINING BETTER AND THEY ARE GETTING PROMOTED FASTER BECAUSE THEY ARE HUNGRY FOR THAT OPPORTUNITY. A lot of time we find employees who are kind of complacent but these youth that are part of this coalition are not complacent whatsoever.”
