So, let’s dig in. What is up with all of these surveys, evaluaons, and quesonnaires? What happens to the informaon that is collected? Is there a right or wrong answer? Will my answers reflect poorly on myself? Evaluaons, as I like to call them, are one of the most helpful tools for planning events and preparing lesson plans. Informaon that is collected is used to inform the instructor, or commiee, of their performance, not a reflecon of you the individual. Informaon collected can also be used to find out if there was useful informaon, was it interesng, were the parcipants comfortable and ready to learn, were they able to learn from the way the presenter taught, or to decide if the event is even worth having again. There are usually no right or wrong answers and, as I menoned, the evaluaon is not a reflecon of the parcipant, but more so about the event, preparaon, and presenters. Boom line is that evaluaons are important and extremely useful. I know they can be annoying, but on average they usually take about 5-10 minutes to complete (somemes longer, but not very oſten). Even though I complained a lile about the evaluaon that was sent to me, I did take it and I made sure to give well thought out answers so that the people who planned the webinar could improve their program. I encourage you to take all the surveys and evaluaons that are sent to you and give honest and thoughul feedback, because it can mean the difference between a beer program and one that never is done again. Greetings Everyone! As I was sitting in my office trying to think about what I wanted to write about this month, I received an e-mail request to fill out an evaluation for a webinar I attended. I thought to myself, “Ugh! Another one? I just did one of these the last time!” And then I laughed a bit because I realized that many of you probably think the same thing and might even have a few more thoughts and questions. So, let’s dig in.

What is up with all of these surveys, evaluations, and questionnaires? What happens to the information that is collected? Is there a right or wrong answer? Will my answers reflect poorly on myself? Evaluations, as I like to call them, are one of the most helpful tools for planning events and preparing lesson plans. Information that is collected is used to inform the instructor, or committee, of their performance, not a reflection of you the individual. Information collected can also be used to find out if there was useful information, was it interesting, were the participants comfortable and ready to learn, were they able to learn from the way the presenter taught, or to decide if the event is even worth having again. There are usually no right or wrong answers and, as I mentioned, the evaluation is not a reflection of the participant, but more so about the event, preparation, and presenters.

Bottom line is that evaluations are important and extremely useful. I know they can be annoying, but on average they usually take about 5-10 minutes to complete (sometimes longer, but not very often). Even though I complained a little about the evaluation that was sent to me, I did take it and I made sure to give well thought out answers so that the people who planned the webinar could improve their program. I encourage you to take all the surveys and evaluations that are sent to you and give honest and thoughtful feedback, because it can mean the difference between a better program and one that never is done again.

Evaluations are just one tool that help us to Make the Best Better!

Cheers!

A Word from the BoardWinter is almost over and spring is just around the corner. If you or your family are getting a little stir crazy staying inside, there are plenty of county wide activities available to help keep you busy and get your child started on their fair projects. The Leaders Association has three goals. Previously I talked about getting to know other leaders at our leaders meetings. This month, I want to talk about our second goal, having a county wide 4-H activity for everyone to participate in. The main purpose is to have fun, get to know other fellow 4-H members, and promote 4-H in our community. This is a wonderful opportunity to show others how amazing our county 4-H program is. More times than not, when 4-H is mentioned people never in the program associate it with kids that live on a farm, or having animals. Knowing this, we can use our second goal to showcase our program and bring awareness to 4-H in Outagamie County. At our last Leaders Association meeting there were several good suggestions for a county wide activity: Timber Rattler game, adopt a highway, attend an honor flight return, or a movie night at the De Pere cinema. We would love to have more suggestions and your input. Please email [email protected] with more ideas and suggestions. Goals give you a starting point and a destination to reach. The process of writing your goals down can help you clarify what you really want to do, understand the importance of pursuit and commit to achieving them. Goals have value when they help you develop and improve yourself or others’ potential.

WI State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl April 4 | UW Madison

The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest will be held at the UW Madison Animal Sciences Building. The Dairy Bowl is a “quiz bowl” competition where all questions deal with dairy topics. Competition in the 4-H Dairy Bowl encourages 4-H members to develop a more complete knowledge of dairy animals and related subjects. This contest provides an educational dairy program for all dairy project members, including those who may not own a dairy project animal, and provides a way to develop alertness, self-confidence, teamwork skills, and mastery in the area of dairy science.

Teams of four members compete with each other in giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Teams receive points for correct answers and may lose points for incorrect answers. The team with the highest final score is the winner.

Teams are divided into three age divisions and teams can consist of 3 or 4 members. The junior division are youth who are under 14 years of age as of January 1, 2020. The senior division are youth who are all 14 years of age or older as of January 1, 2020. A mixed team must contain at least one youth from each age division.

The contest is organized on a double elimination basis with winning teams advancing into further rounds until a champion team emerges. The cost is $20 per team due at the time of registration. Registration starts at 9 a.m., competitions start at 9:30 a.m. Deadline for registration is March 14, 2020, 5 pm. Please register at this link: https://tinyurl.com/20204HDairyBowl

Youth SpotlightMy Favorite 4-H TripBy: Isabelle Delfosse

This past January, I had the great pleasure to participate in the Wisconsin 4-H Arts Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This was its first year back after a few years of it not running. I heard about this opportunity when my mom got an email saying that there was going to be this art lab through 4-H and I was immediately intrigued. Going into Art Lab, I didn’t know what to expect since

I have never done anything like this before, but I can assure you that it was worth going.

I arrived on Friday, January 17 and checked in at 5:30 pm. We did some really fun getting to know you games in order to feel more comfortable with the other people in the group, there were about 20 kids in total. We also heard some presentations from professional artists. The next day, we split into the two groups, one for drama and one for visual arts, that we signed up for during registration for Art Lab. I was a part of the visual arts group because I really enjoyed all visual art forms, such as theatre, painting, drawing, etc.

We went to the Pyle Center and talked about the project we were going to complete, which was a Matisse inspired pilar that we all made paintings for. It is now currently displayed in the center. Later that day, we went to the Milwaukee Museum of Contemporary Art and the Chazen Museum on the UW-Madison campus, which were both fabulous. We were fortunate enough to be able to receive a tour of the Overture Theatre, which I really enjoyed because I am involved in my school’s theatre program. Sunday, we finished up our group project. Everyone’s parents came to see the work that we did that weekend and each group gave a presentation on our work.

This experience was really inspiring! It gave me more confidence in my public speaking and in my artwork. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had.

Isabelle Delfosse, 17, is a member of the Wide Awake Forward 4-H Club and the current Vice-President of the Youth Leaders Association. This is Isabelle’s 3rd year participating in Outagamie County 4-H. If you would like to learn more about Educational Travel Opportunities, such as Art Lab, you can check out our county website https://outagamie.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-youth-development/travel/ or the state 4-H website https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/wi4hedopp/.
