Head Start is a federally- funded, comprehensive, child development program serving children from low-income families who will be 3 or 4 years old by September 1, 2019. Children with disabilities are included in the program and receive a full range of developmental services.

Eligibility for Head Start is based on family income at or below the federal poverty level. The open enrollment period for the 2019-2020 school year runs through

May 10, 2019. Families can apply by visiting any of the 34 Miami-Dade Head Start sites across the county and completing an application. A

list of participating schools is available at http://headstart.dadeschools.net.

The Don’t Stall, Just Call Campaign was created to support the mental wellness of our students. Students at DASH created a wonderful poster that lists anonymous, toll-free numbers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the National Eating Disorder Association, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, the Florida Department of Health and the Crisis Text Line. The poster also reminds students that there are fully trained counselors on campus if they need to speak to someone face-to-face. By providing telephone and text numbers in a bathroom stall, students are linked to reputable and established organizations that can help them with challenges. These posters were distributed to all middle and senior high schools at the beginning of the school year, and currently can be found in bathroom stalls throughout the District.

Building on a tradition of honoring the excellence of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Alumni; three new notable Miamians were inducted into the M-DCPS Alumni Hall of Fame in February. The new inductees join 31 others who have joined the Hall of Fame since its creation in 2012.

Internationally-acclaimed music producer and Miami Senior High School Alumnus Emilio Estefan joined the ranks of the famous alumni who have contributed to South Florida and the world through their success in Arts and Entertainment. Estefan is a 19-time Grammy Award winner who has produced some of the biggest stars in the music industry, including his wife, Gloria Estefan, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. Additionally, he is a filmmaker, author, restaurateur and shareholder in the Miami Dolphins. He also gives back to South Florida through the Gloria Estefan Foundation, which promotes education, health and cultural development.

The second inductee into

the Alumni Hall of Fame was Miami Coral Park graduate Alan Fein, who has had an immeasurable impact on South Florida’s sports and arts community. Fein was on the original committee that brought the Miami Heat franchise to South Florida. He also helped create the Colony Theater, City Theater and the Adrienne Arsht Center, which through the Cultural Passport initiative allows tens of thousands of students to experience live theater performances for free. Fein was also a founding member of the Key Biscayne Village Council and led efforts to expand MAST Academy.

Ana VeigaMilton is so committed to her alma mater, Southwest Miami Senior High, that she served as its Principal TODAY this year and is working with school administration to start an alumni association at the school. She was a very active student, Valedictorian, served as Student Government President, and was voted Most Likely to Succeed. Through her work as the President of the Jose Milton Foundation, VeigaMilton gives back millions of dollars to philanthropic causes, including providing funds for a state-of-the art recording studio at Miami Arts Studio at Zelda Glazer.

All inductees were honored at an intimate reception at the home of Natasha Munilla and Bart Bastian, invited to participate in a student speaking event at Miami Coral Park Senior High, and were honored on stage at the Foundation for New Education Initiatives “For the Love of Learning” Gala.

Students at iPrep Academy highlight the power of reading! Schools across the district invited community members, parents, and district staff to read one of Dr. Seuss’s books to students. Read Across America Day is an annual reading motivationand awareness program that celebrates reading and the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

Once again, Miami-Dade County Public Schools hosted the ever-successful National College Fair.

More than 10,000 students and parents participated in the four-hour event where representatives from 200 colleges and universities provided answers to questions regarding admissions, financial aid, housing and testing requirements.

We are less than one month away from the 4th Annual Superintendent’s 5K Challenge to support Miami-Dade County Public Schools! Join thousands of students, parents, educators and community supporters on Saturday April 13, 2019 at 7 a.m. at Museum Park for a morning of running, walking and friendly competition to benefit our local public schools.

The 5K (3.1 miles) course starts and finishes at the Museum Park on Biscayne Boulevard. The route heads eastbound on the MacArthur Causeway, then loops around onto Watson Island before heading back.

Adults may register as

a Runner/Walker with a $30.00 + $3.03 registration fee. Students have three options to choose from: 5K, 1-mile Run, and the Kid’s Dash for children ages 2-9. Registration for each student option is $10.00 + $1.68 registration fee. Participants have the option of registering as an individual or joining an existing team.

La campaña No Te Estanques, Solo Llama fue creada para apoyar el bienestar mental de nuestros estudiantes. Los estudiantes en DASH crearon un afiche que enumera información a la Línea Nacional de Prevención del Suicidio, la Asociación Nacional de Trastornos de Alimentación, la Red Nacional de Violación, Abuso e Incesto, el Departamento de Salud de la Florida y la Línea de Texto de Crisis. También les recuerda a los estudiantes que cuentan con consejeros totalmente capacitados en el plantel si necesitan hablar con alguien en persona. Al proporcionar esta información en un baño, los estudiantes están vinculados a organizaciones acreditadas y establecidas que pueden ayudarles. Estos afiches se distribuyeron a todas las escuelas intermedias y secundarias al comienzo del curso escolar y actualmente se pueden encontrar en los baños en todo el Distrito.

Cimentada en la tradición de honrar la excelencia de los Egresados de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado Miami-Dade (M-DCPS); tres nuevos miamenses destacados fueron presentados al Salón de la Fama de los Egresados de las M-DCPS el pasado mes de febrero. Emilio Estefan, productor de música reconocido internacionalmente y egresado de la escuela secundaria Miami Senior High School, se unió a los rangos de egresados famosos que han contribuido al Sur de la Florida y al mundo a través de su éxito en las Artes y el Entretenimiento. El Sr. Estefan ha ganado 19 premios Grammy y ha producido algunas de las estrellas más importantes de la industria musical, que incluyen a su esposa, Gloria Estefan, Shakira y Jennifer López. Además, es cineasta, autor, dueño de restaurantes y accionista de los Miami Dolphins. También devuelve al Sur de la Florida a través de la fundación Gloria Estefan Foundation, que promueve la educación, la salud y el desarrollo cultural.

INSCRÍBASE YA PARA CORRER POR LA EDUCACIÓN ESTUDIANTES DE LAS M-DCPS LISTOS PARA LA UNIVERSIDAD

¡Los estudiantes de iPrep Academy destacan el poder de la lectura! Las escuelas de todo el distrito invitaron a los miembros de la comunidad, padres de familia y personal del distrito a leer uno de los libros del Dr. Seuss a los estudiantes. ¡Estamos a menos de un mes del 4o Reto Anual del Superintendente de 5K para apoyar a las Escuelas Públicas del Condado Miami-Dade! Únase a miles de estudiantes, padres de familia, docentes y apoyadores de la comunidad el sábado, 13 de abril del 2019 a las 7 a.m. en el Museum Park para una mañana de carreras, caminatas y una competencia amistosa para beneficiar a nuestras escuelas públicas locales.

La carrera de 5K (3.1 millas) comienza y termina en el Museum Park en Biscayne Boulevard. La ruta se dirige hacia el este en MacArthur Causeway, luego recorre la Isla Watson antes de regresar.

Los adultos pueden inscribirse como Corredor / Caminante

con una tarifa de inscripción de 30 dólares + 3.03 dólares. Los estudiantes tienen tres opciones para elegir: 5K, Carrera de 1 milla y Carrera para niños de 2 a 9 años de edad.
