A Message from Rabbi Barry Leff

CONNECTION PAGE 3 SEPT/OCT 2016

As I write this article for the September/October Bulletin, it’s mid-August, a few days before Tisha b’Av, the holiday when we commemorate the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem (twice), the crushing of the Bar Kochba revolt against Rome in 132 CE, the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, and various other disasters that have befallen the Jewish people on this date.

We’re at the start of a two+ month long spiritual journey we call the “High Holiday Season.” Rabbi Alan Lew, z”l, in his remarkable book “This is Real and

You Are Completely Unprepared” calls it a journey from “one broken house to another broken house.” In one, the destroyed temple, we are sitting and crying. In the other, the sukkah, the flimsy "booth," we are sitting and rejoicing, commanded to be happy. Rabbi Lew wrote:

So this concatenation of ritual — this dance that begins on Tisha B'Av and ends on Sukkot, that begins with the mournful collapse of a house and ends with the joyful collapse of a house, this intentional spasm that awakens us and carries us through death and back to life again — stands for the journey the soul is always on.

The High Holidays have an incredibly wide range of spiritual meaning. From sadness, mourning, and resolving to do better on Tisha b’Av, through intense reflection during the month of Elul leading up to the judgement and forgiveness of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and closing with the joy of Sukkot.

When people think of preparing for the holidays, they usually think of things like inviting guests, polishing the silver, and buying food. But to get the most out of the holidays, “spiritual preparation” is needed as well.

To really experience the High Holidays as a spiritual journey takes knowledge and some effort.

To help with that process, I’m offering a few classes where we’ll be able to learn together and deepen our understanding of the holidays.

On Shabbat afternoons, starting August 27, we’ll have a seudah shlishit, third Shabbat meal, after the afternoon service at 5:30, and we’ll study Rabbi Lew’s book mentioned above over a bite to eat.

And starting on September 20 I’ll be teaching an “Essential Judaism” course that will include a few sessions on the holidays as a whole curriculum including theology (what we believe), halacha (what we do) and much much more. The class will meet on Tuesdays at 6 pm.

Details on both learning opportunities can be found elsewhere in the Bulletin and on the synagogue’s website.

May the new year, 5777, be a year of growth and blessings for you, your family, and the entire

Temple Beth-El community.

A Message from TBE President Jacob Halpern

CONNECTION PAGE 4 SEPT/OCT 2016

Dear Fellow Beth-El Members:

These past two months as President of Temple Beth-El have been a fun and fascinating time for me. The social aspects of being president of this shul are one of its brightest benefits. I have met with and listened to -- some new acquaintances and some old friends. I have learned quickly that not only does everyone have an opinion, but no two people seem to share the same ones. I can now confirm that the old saying “two Jews, three opinions,” is true. While this can be a challenge, it is also a strength. It shows passion for our congregation and our shared values.

For those of you who have connected with me, those who have not yet reached out, and our entire congregation as a whole, I encourage you to continue to speak up. As everyone should know by now, our visioning process has reached the “heart of the matter,” meaning this is the time to let your voice be heard. What is it YOU want from YOUR synagogue? You should have received invitations, by email and regular mail, to complete the visioning survey and to sign up for “listening sessions.” A “listening session” is a small group gathering that will provide an opportunity for all congregants to share thoughts and ideas as we chart our vision for the future together. The sessions are being held at a variety of locations, times and dates to accommodate as many congregants as possible. If you have not participated yet, I encourage you to do so. This is YOUR synagogue. Each of the listening sessions is purposefully small, so that every person has a chance to be heard. I know that by working together we can mold our future to meet our dreams while not losing sight of our current needs.

One of the challenges currently facing us is trying to hold our membership commitment steady while living in a world of rising costs. To each of our congregants who have increased your membership commitment this year, I thank you. Due to our generous congregants, as well as cutting costs and reassessing priorities, our final budget for this upcoming year is balanced. Steven Sikora, our treasurer, and Tammy McClellan, Bookkeeper, have put forth many hard hours to achieve this goal. However, while the “balanced budget” for this year is a step in the right direction, it does not mean we are debt free. Temple Beth-El is carrying a sizable line of credit just under $800,000.00. Thus, “balanced” is not the same as “debt free.” We are a long way from claiming the latter. In our ongoing efforts to make these words mean the same thing for us, Steven, Bob Greenberg and I are working on ideas that will need your support.

The High Holidays are just around the corner. One of the first initiatives will be a High Holiday call to action. I hope each of you will participate to the best of your ability. Additionally, with Rosh Hashanah 5777 fast approaching, from my bird’s eye view of the synagogue, I am pleased to report that our clergy, lay leaders and support staff are working hard to make this a joyous, happy new year for each of us. Rabbi Barry Leff, just a few months into his short tenure with us, has introduced new twists on programming, which will be reflected in our High Holiday services. Rabbi Robinson is hard at work on family programming, for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We will have something for everyone.

On behalf of myself and my family, I wish everybody a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.

L’Shana Tova,

Jacob Halpern (President)

On August 22, I officially assumed the presidency of the Temple Beth-El Foundation Board of Directors. It’s truly an honor to serve during this time. I know you’re thinking, “What is she, mashugana? There’s no Executive Director, the Foundation is paying out more than they are taking in, and the synagogue is in transition.” All of these things are true, but I’m excited about the future and what we can build TOGETHER. I love Temple Beth-El. Though I am a relative newcomer, arriving in Birmingham 14 years ago, Temple Beth-El was the first place that I visited that made me feel “at home” immediately. Temple Beth-El congregants demonstrated Judaism’s most time honored and practiced virtues; the virtue of Hachnasat

Orchim – the virtue of welcoming the stranger, of offering hospitality. I have NEVER spent a Rosh Hashanah lunch, Kol Nidre dinner or Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast alone! I have been warmly welcomed and in some cases “adopted” as family. This is a tribute to our congregation and why I want to serve. This is also why I am excited about the future which is unfolding through the visioning process, Shema Koleinu: Hear All Our Voices, funded in part by the Foundation.

You may have heard that the Temple Beth-El Foundation’s mission is to perpetuate Temple Beth-El and Conservative Judaism by sustaining a strong endowment. The Foundation Board of Directors uses this as a filter when evaluating requests outside of the annual allocation. The key word in the mission is perpetuate. This means that we need to balance current needs with future needs. To truly be successful, we need to increase our endowment. If you are interested in opening up a fund, naming Temple Beth-El Foundation as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, leaving a bequest or just want to get together for coffee, please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected]. I look forward to working together to preserve the future of Temple Beth-El and reinvigorate our collective experiences.

In closing, I’d like to thank Arlene Fisher for ably overseeing the Executive Director Search Committee. Arlene has been instrumental in helping us define our needs and gently reminding us about them when considering candidates. During the transition, Barbara Bonfield has generously volunteered to help keep the Foundation in good working order. Barbara has dedicated a lot of time to organizing the office and ensuring that donations are deposited, recorded and acknowledged, working closely with a wonderfully supportive Temple Beth-El staff including Tammy McClellan, Emily Gregory, and Lindsey Herring. We are fortunate to have dedicated volunteers and caring staff to maintain the day-to-day operations of the Foundation.

ADULT LEARNERS:

EXPAND YOUR MIND WITH RABBI LEFF

Nosh and Learn The High Holidays are coming. Are you ready? I’m not talking about food; I’m talking about spiritually.

Rabbi Alan Lew, z”l, wrote a wonderful book called “This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared.” It’s a spiritual journey through the High Holidays, which he describes as a journey from “one broken house to another.” The first broken house is the destroyed Temple we remember on Tisha b’Av, a holiday in August that marked the start of the “High Holiday season.” The second broken house is the flimsy booth we take our meals in during the festival of Sukkot, the end of the season. It’s a journey that takes us from brokenness and distance from God to wholeness and peace with God.

We’ll be studying passages from the book together on Saturdays after the 5:30 pm Minyan. We’ll have a seudah shlishit (Sabbath third meal) and do some learning following the afternoon service. After studying, we’ll have the evening service.

This class began on Aug. 27 and runs until Oct. 30, so you’re still welcome to join us! For more information, contact Rav Barry at [email protected].

Jewish Year 5777 – Fall 2016/Spring 2017

The Essential Judaism Rabbi Barry Leff

Course Description What do Jews believe about God, Heaven & Hell, the Messiah? What’s with all the rules? What’s Jewish prayer about? How can I feel connected to God in prayer? How do I find meaning in Shabbat (the Sabbath) and holidays? What does Judaism have to say about contemporary issues such as alternative sexualities,

medical ethics, the environment? Why is Israel so important to the Jewish people? What about the Palestinians?

Join Rav Barry for a series of 30 classes exploring these and other questions. The course is aimed at both Jews and Gentiles interested in learning more about Judaism. Whether your Jewish education stopped with your Bar or Bat Mitzvah and you want to develop an adult relationship with Judaism, or if you have done some learning and just want to continue the discussion and deepen your knowledge, or are just curious about Judaism, there’s something for you here.

The course is free and open to the public. Anyone not Jewish who completes the course will have completed Rav Barry’s educational requirements for conversion if they are interested. A complete schedule will be posted on the Temple Beth-El website. You need not commit to the entire course; people are welcome to drop-in for any class session of interest. It will also be possible to participate in the class via Skype.

Classes will meet at Temple Beth-El, Tuesday evenings at 6 pm, starting Sept. 20, 2016.

SELICHOT PROGRAM, SEPT. 24 Please join us for our Selichot program and service on Saturday night, September 24 at 7:30 pm.

Selichot (the Hebrew word means “forgiveness”) are penitential prayers we traditionally recite starting the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah (Sephardi Jews start saying them earlier, nearly a month before Rosh Hashanah). As the High Holidays are approaching, we begin to get into the mood of the season by intensifying our prayers.

We will start our program with a screening of the movie “The Quarrel,” a deeply moving film about religious responses to tragedy between friends – one secular, one religious. The themes of faith and reconciliation are very appropriate to the High Holidays.

Rabbi Irving Greenberg of CLAL had this to say about the movie:

“There is no question that THE QUARREL is the most powerful, cinematically effective, intellectually exciting and personally moving portrayal on the screen of the conflict within the modern soul between tradition and change. I cannot recall a movie that was at once so wrenching and touching in the viewing yet left me feeling so alive and inspired afterward.”

After the movie we’ll have a short discussion over dessert, and then we’ll have our Selichot service and prayers.

MEN’S CLUB UPDATES I just wanted to take this opportunity and thank all the new members of the Men’s Club. We have grown to 67 members!!! I want to thank each and every one of you for becoming a member, helping the Men’s Club reach its goals and putting the Men’s Club back on the radar for Temple Beth-El.

There is a lot of exciting events in the making, and it is not too late to become a member and join in on the fun. I have sent a letter out to each of you asking you to join. If, for some reason, you did not get the letter, please contact me on my cell 205-369-4399 and let me know. One of my largest hurdles when I became president of the Men’s Club was to update our database. With the help of TBE’s bookkeeper Tammy McClellan, I think we nailed it. But, if I did miss you, PLEASE contact me. Members are what it takes to achieve our goals. Some of the upcoming events are “Around The World at The Kimerlings” on September 10 and “The Men’s Club Annual Golf Tournament” on October 16 (See the back cover for more details!). Members, be looking out for more information on these events, but go ahead and lock in those dates.

I also want to call on all volunteers, Men’s Club members and congregants (male or female) to please help in ushering for the High Holidays. We need your help for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

To sign up, visit www.templebeth-el.net, where you can access our SignUp Genius online form and let us know which days you’re available. Feel free to sign up for more than one day. We welcome help from your wives and grown kids as well. The more, the merrier!

If you have any questions or concerns about ushering duties, contact Dan Weinrib, [email protected], or me, [email protected].

Once again I would like to thank the men of the Men’s Club. You guys make being a part of the Men’s Club exciting and fun.

Message From Director of Congregational Learning, Rabbi Joseph

We Eat!

CONNECTION PAGE 12 SEPT/OCT 2016

It once happened that in preparing for both the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that a woman asked her rabbi, “What is the difference between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur? I mean I know that on Yom Kippur we fast, but what happens on Rosh Hashanah?” To which the rabbi replied, “We eat!”

For many of us it seems obvious, when we look at our tradition, our customs often revolve around food. In fact, the common cheeky remarks are, “They tried to kill us; we won; let’s eat!” However, during Rosh Hashanah, we do not observe or recall a specific period in time where we were oppressed or threatened. Rather, we join together in song, prayer, Torah, and of course food, to celebrate the cycle of our lives.

Again, food has come to be a way in which we express our understanding of changing seasons and moments we hold dear. Joan Nathan describes it as such:

We like to think of the symbolism of the food at this time of year. No dark foods – only bright fresh oranges, carrots, honey, apples. Circles mean a good year all year round. We shape our challah into a circle for Rosh Hashanah, sometimes adding golden raisins for an even sweeter year.1

Likewise, many observe the common tradition of dipping apple into honey as another means of sweetening our year.

There are even those who kick it up a notch and host a “Sephardi style” seder during Rosh Hashanah. That’s right! Much like our seder during Passover, families will present various food items that seemingly do not belong together, and use them to creatively explain their hopes, aspirations, and wishes for the coming year.

No matter how your holiday tables shape out, through a seder, rounded challah, bright fresh fruit, may we all be blessed to share in the joy and bursting potential for the coming year. Shanah Tovah U’Mituka, may this year be one of love and happiness, and also one of sweetness. Let’s eat!

MITZVAH FOR SEPTEMBER, FROM RABBI JOSEPH

Every Shabbat we are blessed to explore our tradition through the Torah reading of the week. Every portion has a different message and lesson to be learned. Use the suggested topic of conversation with your family to spark learning and engagement with the weekly parashah. Be it around your Shabbat table, through social media or driving in carpool… grab hold of your sacred text and make it your own! Re’eh (Sept. 2-3): Tzedakah, Charitable Giving – As Moshe continues to reinforce the law and righteous commandments God has ordained, he likewise points out our responsibility to those in need. Torah teaches us, “do not harden your heart and shut your hand against your needy kinsman” (Deut. 15:7). How will you choose to respond the next time you are given the opportunity? Shoftim (Sept. 9-10): Bal Tashchit, Don’t Destroy – This is a basic ethical principle in

Jewish law and rooted in the Biblical law of Deuteronomy 20:19–20. Torah prohibits us, in the context of wartime, from the cutting down of fruit trees in order to assist in a siege. What other ways can one perform ecological acts in daily practice? Ki Teitzei (Sept. 16-17): Returning Lost Objects – Early on in the parasha (Deut. 22) Moshe describes what to do when one discovers a neighbor’s lost objects. Be it animal, vegetable, or mineral, a Jew is obligated to care for and return the item. In the past announcements were made during Mincha/Ma’ariv to inform the public of lost or found objects. How might we perform this mitzvah today?

Ki Tavo (Sept. 23-24): Walking in God’s Ways – In summation of Moshe’s retelling of God’s commandments the

people are told, “The Lord will establish you as God’s holy people, as God swore to you… [and you should] walk in God’s ways” (Deut. 28:9). One should strive to perfect oneself in the following character traits: compassion; kindness and graciousness towards others; forgiveness for iniquity; honesty, humility and tolerance. How have you and/or God emulated these righteous ways? (Hint: Look back through the Mitzvah of the Week.)

CONNECTION PAGE 23 SEPT/OCT 2016

Much work has been quietly completed by Board members and staff as the holidays grow near. Though the Holidays start late this year, our preparations have already begun, and we invite you to join us in making this a special new year for all. Meet Cantor Acker: Cantor David Acker will be joining us for the High Holidays this year. He has served congregations in the Philadelphia, New York, and South Florida regions as a spiritual, musical, and educational leader for the last 12 years. Cantor David holds a Masters in Cantorial Studies and Jewish Music from Gratz College as well as music degrees from Temple University's Esther Boyer College of Music and Swarthmore College. He has been a member of the Cantors Assembly since 2009. Cantor Acker has said that he loves to sing, but even more, he loves to sing along with others. He believes that "when we make music together we anchor our words to our community and that this is when prayer holds its greatest transformative possibilities." Cantor David has performed in musical theatre as well. Some of his favorite roles have been Cervantes/Don Quixote (Man of La Mancha), Leporello (Don Giovanni), and The Pirate King (Pirates of Penzance). He has sung with The Pennsylvania Opera Theater and The Philadelphia Singers and has performed recitals of Schubert's Dichterliebe at the Philadelphia Art Alliance. In the coming weeks we will share more from and about Cantor Acker!
