CURIOSITY I COURAGE I CITIZENSHIP

FROM THE PRINCIPAL2016 was successful for students and teachers alike. The F1 Team, Infinitude, came second in the WORLD F1 in SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP in Austin, Texas, but possibly even more astonishing, was their World Record for the fastest car-ever! Students, Nicole Kascak, Jesse Stevens and Luke Battjes, made us all proud to see how perseverance and grit can win the day. These Year 10 students were competing against 19-year-old university students as well as high school students from all around the world. If that weren’t enough, along came the Subs in Schools team to win the State title and compete in the National Championship. The students do the work themselves with the dedicated support from Stephen Read, a master teacher. In 2012 he took the team, Cold Fusion, to Abu Dhabi, to bring them home as World Champions. As a result, two students secured scholarships at London University to study Engineering. Teachers like Steve put in long hours after the school day has finished, supporting students in their passion for learning. He is retiring at the end of 2016 and will go down in history as one of Brighton’s heroes for his infectious enthusiasm for learning.

Brighton Secondary experienced more international success with Ellen Hamilton, Sung Bae, and teacher, Ryan Elliot, when they won Silver in the International Schools Culinary Competition. These Year 11 students

succeeded where a Japanese and two French Culinary Schools failed. So many teachers work with the students out of hours. For example, Alan Todd accompanies Lift Dance Troupe every Sunday to rehearse for the annual Fringe Festival. Similarly, the Music and Volleyball teachers spend long hours to develop elite performers. The Volleyball teachers coached 7 students to perform on the international stage, as well as winning the Melbourne School’s Championship in 2015.

There are so many opportunities for students, whether it be the Think Bright Program; the Maker Faire showcasing science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics; the Japanese cultural tours from Hakuo and Himeji; the annual ski trip; the Shakespeare Festival; the professional drama productions; the South Australian Living Artists Festival and Fun Fridays in the Learning Laneway to mention but a few. Drama teachers, Catherine Carter and Kristen McDonnell, negotiated a partnership with the National Institute of Dramatic art whereby the legendary screen writer and playwright, Stephen Sewell, will mentor students to develop new scripts for the theatre.

The teachers continued their professional learning about Flipped Learning under the leadership of Jeremy Le Cornu, whose national profile contributed to the Australian Flip Con Conference being held at our school. Brighton teachers, Toby Ward, Aimee Shattock, Maj-Lis Borgen-Smith, Patrick Mackay and Jeremy were invited to present sessions in contemporary pedagogy. As well as Flipped Learning, teachers developed their understanding of Positive Education, discovering how these approaches can make a difference to students’ connections with school and their engagement with the curriculum.

The curriculum and co-curriculum continues to adapt to world trends. White Ribbon team to lead the school community to say no to domestic violence, have added to the rich tapestry of life at Brighton.

The World Challenge team travelled to Cambodia to do more work on the Kindergarten for which Brighton has raised over $30,000. The cultural tours to Port Lincoln High School and Koonibba provided Brighton students with more understanding of difference and inclusivity. The White Sands Art exhibition showcased the beautiful art work created by Port Lincoln and Brighton students. One of the early notable achievements of 2016 was Kate Ceberano’s three-day residence workshopping the 200 Music students and starring in an evening concert to a full house.

In addition to these stellar achievements the school has been enhanced with a new perimeter fence; new change rooms and toilets; new signage around the

school with new student entry from Brighton Road; pin-up boards throughout school; upgrade of tennis court fencing; installation of soccer back stop fence; classroom airconditioners replaced; upgraded Media and Drama rooms; repairs to back car park; airconditioned Theatre dressing rooms and server room; carpeted Theatre workshop; installed LED house lights in the Theatre auditorium; added a new lighting desk in Concert Hall and installed CCTV in Concert Hall.

Probably the most notable achievement of 2016 was to finally decide on the new school logo. The design and consultation process took three years and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

Our past logos

Our NewIdentityBrighton Secondary School is moving into the future with a new logo that embodies the school’s redevelopment and its history. Many students and staff have been consulted over the past three years to finally arrive at this wonderful new logo.

6 CREATIVITY I COURAGE I CITIZENSHIP

Page 7: CONNECTIONS - Brighton Secondary School · Marcus Falckh 96.5 Celine Chia 95.6 Liam Storken 95.6 Fadi Morgos 95.5 Nina Phillips 95.4 Christopher McDonald 95.0 Jessica McDonald 94.75

In developing a new school logo it was important not to lose sight of the heritage of Brighton Secondary School. Elements of significance from the previous logos have been incorporated to create a new brand that projects a fresh and vibrant vision that reinvents and entrenches Brighton Secondary School within the community and beyond. The identity will be carried through to print/digital collateral and web platforms to ensure that the logo translates across all media. The colour range and typeface were carefully selected to complement the cartouche and to ensure brand consistency.

The Logo MeaningA range of elements, featured previously in one or more school logos, have been brought together and balanced to form a visual representation of Brighton Secondary School.

ColoursOne of the key elements of building a strong brand is colour selection.

Blue, yellow and green have been maintained from the previous logos. The navy blue represents the proximity to the sea and adds to the nautical feel of the logo. The green, the colour of life, renewal and energy, is associated with meanings of growth. The yellow represents the sun and bright future of Brighton Secondary School.

These colours appear in the current uniform range. Whilst retaining the core colours, the tones selected complement the uniforms, ensuring a modern yet timeless identity for Brighton Secondary School.

The Elements The Anchor… is an element that was part of the Brighton High and Mawson High School logos. The symbol reflects hope, stability (steadfastness), security, strength and confidence. Its original intention was to symbolise the school’s proximity to the beach and to provide a challenge to all who were associated with the school to seek, strive for and ‘hold fast’ the fine ideals which it portrays. The anchor also carries meaning as the school Houses, Buffalo, Cygnet and Rapid, are named after ships that arrived in the 1800’s and Holdfast is named after the landing site for the emigrant ships.

The Rope… is an element that formed part of the Brighton High School logo. A rope signifies knowledge, safety and community ties. The rope is formed in a circle and is a universal symbol that signifies the notions of totality, wholeness, eternity, timelessness and all cyclic movement.

The Crest… is a special traditional symbol that encapsulates all the elements - like a family or community. It is a symbol of protection and represents honour and prestige within the school community.

Why change the logo? The current Brighton Secondary School logo was created after the amalgamation of Brighton High School and Mawson High School. Its colours and designs do not incorporate the history of the school very well. The colours of the logo are particular to the 90’s art styles and do not represent a timeless quality for a school logo. With the redevelopment of the school and the future focused facilities, the logo needs to be timeless to reflect the past of all the schools that have contributed to the school history as well as looking to the future. Graphic designers find the current logo very difficult to work with and most logos have a more flattering outer shape which is easier on the eye. Reproduction of the current logo is problematic in print and any promotional item where the logo showcases the school. The motto has always been far too small in proportion to the logo and often required to be removed as it cannot print clearly. Elements of a logo should be balanced to create a distinctive, appropriate and practical graphic, ensuring it is user friendly across all applications.

The annual Sports Presentation Evening was held on Wednesday 23 November to recognise those students who demonstrated exceptional commitment and achieved great success in sport at Brighton Secondary School and in the wider community. At Brighton, over 600 students participate in a diverse sports program every year. They experience team work, discipline and leadership that comes from playing sport.

At this event two old scholars who have excelled in their chosen sport and represented Australia, were inducted into the Brighton Secondary School Sporting Hall of Fame:

• Greg Sukochev - Volleyball (BSS 2001-2005) • Hannah Nielsen - Lacrosse (BSS 2001-2005) • Simon Narsmith - Olympic Beach Volleyball Coach and

MC for the evening (BHS 88)

This induction process will be continued over the coming years with an Honour Board created to recognise all the old scholars who have represented Australia in their chosen sport.

ANZAC Day is the day when Australians commemorate the forging of our national identity and remember the brave acts performed by men and women during times of conflict. 25 April is the anniversary of one of the earliest acts of bravery performed under the Australian flag. It is the anniversary of the Gallipoli landing where the ANZAC spirit was put on display for all to see. Both Australians and New Zealanders have a connection with this sacred day because it recognises not only the sacrifice of ANZACs in Gallipoli but also all efforts and casualties in campaigns since.

This year marks the 50 year anniversaries of two events in the Vietnam War. The first was the death of Private Errol Noack on 24 May 1966. He was the first National Serviceman to die in Vietnam causing great controversy, as it was thought that he was most probably killed by friendly fire. The second event is the battle of Long Tan, Vietnam when the 108 men of Delta Company 6RAR fought over 2000 regular and Viet Cong troops. Pinned down, the Australian soldiers, aided by intense artillery fire, fought and fought until eventually, after reinforcements arrived, the Viet Cong retreated. The battle of Long Tan was 51 years after the landing at Gallipoli and as at Gallipoli the Australian spirit was still strong. For their efforts on that day Delta Company 6RAR was awarded the US Presidential Citation.

All Australians share a deep connection with ANZAC Day. Personally I am proud to say that my great-grandfather fought in World War I, serving as a Light Horseman during the conflict at Gallipoli and my grandfather fought in World War II serving in the air force throughout the Pacific Islands.

My Pa used to tell stories about the best ways to go fishing. He said you could only use a grenade if you had a string to lower it under the water. Lobbing it in was no good because the splash scared away the fish before the explosion went off. When he was attached to the US regiments the only way to use all his ammo was shoot coconuts down from trees. He would also say, in a much quieter tone, that there was more to worry about during the night than mosquitoes, having woken up on more than one occasion to find a mate was going home sooner than expected. Over 27,000 Australians died during World War II. Thankfully my Pa was not one of them. I cannot begin to understand the experience that he and so many others went through and all I can say is, ‘Thank you’.

Today I am giving this speech here on ANZAC Day to say, ‘Thank you’ to every man and woman who has shown that Australian spirit and to commemorate all the sacrifices made by Australians and New Zealanders during times of conflict. We will remember them.

Oliver Richardson Head Prefect

ANZAC Day is often an event where we gather to commemorate the first landing of the ANZACs at Gallipoli and the horrors that occurred that day. However, ANZAC Day is much more than that. It is a day on which we remember all members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. It is a day on which we acknowledge the contribution and suffering of all those who have served. And it is a day on which we salute the spirit of ANZAC, with its qualities of courage, mateship and sacrifice. Qualities which continue to have significant meaning and relevance to our sense of national identity to this day. One hundred years ago, on 19 July 1916, Australian troops fought in their first major battle on the Western Front…and lost. The Battle of Fromelles was supposed to be a feint to draw German troops away from their pursuit of the Somme offensive. However, within hours of the initial attack, over 5,500 Australian troops had been lost, equal to the amount of casualties in the Boer, Korean and Vietnam Wars combined, and the battle ultimately made no impact on the Somme offensive. Not even a week later, on 23 July, Australian troops fought to capture the village of Pozieres, initiating the beginning of the two-week long Battle of Pozieres. After successfully capturing the village, the troops occupying Pozieres endured multiple counter-attacks and hard retaliation from German troops but ultimately succeeded in securing the village. However, the battle was hard won and came at the cost of 23,000 casualties, 6,800 lost their lives. The Somme offensive resulted in one of the highest number of casualties in World War I and the first day of the offensive on 1 July 1916 remains the most costly day in the history of the Australian army. By the end of the offensive on 18 November 1916, Australian casualties numbered over 24,000, a larger number of casualties than the whole Gallipoli campaign. It was shortly after this offensive that the Australian parliament made its first attempt to introduce conscription. Although the movement for full conscription failed twice, recruiting campaigns intensified in content and amount. One has to wonder how many men and boys who enlisted truly believed in the age-old line, dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, ‘it is sweet and glorious to die for one’s country’.Today, we gather to remember the sacrifices of those who have gone before us. Never will we forget the service that these men have done our country. For in the words of John William Streets, a soldier lost on that first disastrous day of the Somme offensive,

‘There by the fallen youth, where heroes lie,

Close by each simple cross the flowers will spring,

The bons enfants will wander in Spring,

And lovers dream those dreams that never die.’

2016 has been another great year for Digital Learning at Brighton Secondary School. Every student has their own device - iPad at Year 8 and 9, MacBook at Year 10, 11 and 12. Staff and students find the ability for interactivity and creativity on iPads very beneficial.Students are able to collaborate, question, research, design, create and analyse with ease. Exciting new and innovative ways are constantly being sought to enhance teaching and learning with iPads for the Year 8 and 9 students. Using MacBooks at Years 10, 11 and 12 is most beneficial as the MacBook has the capacity and capabilities to support the rigour and demands of senior schooling.

Brighton Secondary School staff worked on their professional development on flipped learning, with teachers developing their skills at producing recorded curriculum content. Students benefited from having access to these video lessons anywhere, anytime. This meant that more lesson time was allocated to student-centred learning activities and teachers were able to work with smaller groups of students or individual students to help them apply and extend their knowledge. Some teachers used digital technology to produce recorded feedback for students and this was very useful.

To assist with the flipped learning program, the Innovation Studio was built. This is a sophisticated facility where teachers and students produced high quality and effective video content. The standing lightboard is one of the best in Australian schools. Such is the standing of Brighton Secondary School, that the national flipped learning conference FlipCon was hosted at the school in November. This event was attended by over 200 teachers from around Australia and is further evidence and recognition of the fantastic digital learning taking place at Brighton Secondary School.

Secondary Schools Culinary ChallengeOn Monday 27 June two groups of students from Brighton Secondary School competed in the Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge held at Regency TAFE. These groups consisted of Ellen Hamilton and Sung Bae, Blake Warren and Vaibhavi Lath. They competed against eighteen other teams from around South Australia, with the challenge of creating and cooking the best lamb rack dish. Both teams were successful in their task, being the only teams in the competition to receive the gold medal ranking. Furthermore, the overall winners of the competition were the team of Ellen and Sung who then went on to represent Brighton Secondary School and South Australia in the International Secondary Schools Culinary Competition which was held in Sydney.

International Secondary Schools Culinary ChallengeCongratulations to Ellen Hamilton and Sung Bae for achieving a silver medal in the International Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge held in Sydney.

They competed against some of the top culinary schools from around the world, made lifelong friendships and met some incredibly prestigious chefs along the way. Both students worked together to produce a beautifully presented chicken roulade with pumpkin puree, turned potato and blueberry chicken sauce. Ellen and Sung practised for numerous hours after school to perfect their dish. Well done on this amazing achievement!

The opening of the White Sands Exhibition was held on Thursday 16 June in the Concert Hall Foyer. White Sands was a collaborative art exhibition celebrating the partnership between Port Lincoln High School and Brighton Secondary School. Brighton Secondary School students had the opportunity to meet with the Port Lincoln students in Adelaide, in Port Lincoln and in Scotdesco Aboriginal Community to build friendships, develop cultural understanding and teach each other art skills that began the major works for the exhibition. The artwork was packed in suitcases and carefully carried between the schools. New skills were learnt such as basket weaving and contemporary Aboriginal painting techniques, along with understanding of the storytelling involved in Indigenous art.

Two of the major pieces in the exhibition were based on the sand dunes that are common to the local areas and are intertwined in most of the shared experiences. Another major piece Transience was based on the fields that were seen on the flight between the two schools.

The exhibition was opened by Olivia O’Neill, Tony Green and Wanda Jarvis, as well as some of the students. It was catered for by Brighton Secondary School’s Home Economics students.

It was a wonderful experience learning about the Port Lincoln community, Indigenous language, culture and art as well as making valuable friendships.

Following a very successful 2015 European tour, students drew inspiration from many visiting guest clinicians at the commencement of 2016. The Music department jumped on board to help Jessye Campbell’s fundraising efforts with a 1000k’s 4 Kids concert. Several student-led ensembles also emerged including: the Amoroso String Quartet, Jambol, Bermuda Bay and Experiment One. Student leadership took a big step forward with Isabel Mawby, Christopher McDonald, Katarina Holmes and Jim Morris being selected as Brighton Secondary School’s first Music Captains and Vice-Captains.

The ensembles once again performed extremely well at the Adelaide Choral Eisteddfod and the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association (ABODA) Band Festival with the Treble Choir, Boys Chamber Choir and Percussion Ensemble 1 winning their sections.

2016 was a Generations in Jazz year for Brighton Secondary School and, as luck would have it, Kate Ceberano! Brighton Secondary School Music department was delighted to secure her services as an Artist in Residence in Term 3 for three inspirational and unforgettable days.

The 40th anniversary of the Special Interest Music Centre at Brighton Secondary School was celebrated in the Music Spectacular concerts with many ensembles performing hits from the founding year, 1976.

WORLD LACROSSE CHAMPION HANNAH NIELSEN RETURNS TO BRIGHTON SECONDARY Old Scholar Hannah Nielsen (BSS 2001-2005) returned to Brighton Secondary for a visit on the 20th June. Hannah has been living, studying and playing Lacrosse for the past 10 years in the USA. She played at Northwestern University. Her list of accomplishments whilst away is quite extraordinary.

• Twice named in the All Star World Lacrosse team 2009, 2013

• 3 time Australia Representative at World Championships

• 4 time National Championships team member

• Twice player of the year - Junior and Senior

• Coach Division 1 for 6 years

Hannah was also nominated for USA Sportswoman of the Year in 2008 and 2009 by the well known magazine Sports Illustrated alongside Serena Williams and Misty May-Treanor.

“She has the ability to step up in pressure situations like Michael Jordan, who you always knew would make the big shot,” Wildcats coach Kelly Amonte Hiller said. “And she has that Larry Bird characteristic of making the people around her better.

During her years as a student Hannah represented Brighton in many sports teams in particular as a member of the Special Interest Volleyball Program and the successful Open Girls Champion Knockout and 9 a side Football teams.

We wish Hannah all the best in her return to Australia and look forward to acknowledging her fantastic achievements as a Brighton Secondary Sports Hall of Famer at the Sports Presentation evening to be held in Term 4 on Wednesday 23rd November.

DR JOANNA NIELD (BSS 1992-1996) AWARDED THE GILL MEMORIAL AWARD Dr Joanna Nield who graduated from Brighton Secondary School in 1996 has just been awarded the Gill Memorial Award by the Royal Geographical Society, UK (for outstanding early career research in aeolian processes and arid landform development). Joanna is now an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton in the UK. She won the Geography Prize in Year 12 at Brighton and received a 20/20 in the Geography SACE results.

Her research focuses on furthering our understanding of the processes which help shape the surface of our earth and the way it looks - particularly the reshaping of sandy dunes or dusty dry lakes by wind in dryland environments. Her work has taken her to three different continents, with field sites located in Namibia and Botswana in Southern Africa, the USA and Iceland.

Jo says: “I feel tremendously humbled and honoured to receive this award. I am passionate about aeolian geomorphology and really enjoy exploring interactions and feedbacks between wind and surface patterns

through novel fieldwork and computer simulation modelling.

“I have had the pleasure of working with some brilliant colleagues and mentors, and appreciate the support I have received from ten different funding bodies, including the RGS. This has enabled me to undertake research in some incredible and remote environments to improve our understanding of arid landscapes and the processes which shape them.”

The RGS annual Medals and Awards recognise excellence in geographical research, fieldwork, teaching and public engagement, and are presented to those who have made outstanding achievements in the sphere of the discipline. The Gill Memorial award encourages geographical research in academics who have shown great potential.

Jo was presented with the award certificate by the Society’s President Nicolas Crane at a Medals and Awards Celebration Day at the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington, London on Monday 6 June 2016

Olympian Sam Willoughby is making good progress with his rehabilitation from a serious spinal injury and dreams of walking down the aisle at his wedding later this year, according to his father.

The two-time world champion BMX rider and Olympic silver medallist suffered a career-ending spinal injury during a training accident in the United States of America last year.

Willoughby has since returned from Colorado to his home in San Francisco where he is undergoing physiotherapy four times a week.

The South Australian Government is auctioning off a hot lap in a V8 race car on Friday at the Clipsal 500 with champion driver Lee Holdsworth in a bid to help with the expenses of Willoughby’s recovery.

Willoughby’s father, Colin, said the money raised would go towards his son’s ongoing medical costs and buying rehab equipment.

“He puts into his rehab just as hard as he put in to his training so if anyone’s going to make it, he will,” he said.

“He’s now able to get onto a static bike and hold himself up, do some sit-ups; he’s still gaining balance and hasn’t got leg movement as such but he’s certainly getting there.

“He did tell me a couple of weeks ago he has dreams at night of him walking again and also dreams of racing again.”

Willoughby’s number one goal at the moment is to learn to walk, hopefully in time for his wedding on New Year’s Eve.

The 25-year-old has recently started rehabilitation with personal trainer Eric Harness, who also helped Australian snowboarder Josh Wood get back on his feet and walk

again after he suffered a spinal cord injury in 2000.

“Mentally, he’s amazed me with his strength, sure he’s had a couple of moments but we all have moments everyday ... and his moments don’t last,” his father said.

“His positiveness is just amazing; I just don’t know how he can be as strong as he is with it.

“I think being back in his own environment and his own house has really helped; he just goes at it that hard that the PT has to sometimes tell him to back off because he’ll make himself too tired.”

Mr Willoughby said his son was “over the moon” with the support from Australians and hoped to return to Adelaide for a visit later this year.

Fundraising For ‘All-Round Nice Guy’His Road2Recovery Foundation has already raised more than $248,000 and Tourism Minister Leon Bignell hoped money raised from the hot lap auction would tip it past the $250,000 mark.

“I think all South Australians were really touched by what had happened and people just wanted to help,” he said.

“And as a Government we looked around and there were a few things that we had in the cupboard that we thought we could auction off to go to the fundraiser.

“It’s going to a great cause, Sam Willoughby, a terrific South Australian, obviously a great athlete ... but all-round nice guy as well.”
